Spot on and hilarious.
Stop equating MSNBC with CNN and (gasp) FOX, Oliver. If you can tell the difference between Democrats and Republicans, I say you can discriminate between News for Airheads and the forum for relatively sane commentators like Olbermann, Maddow and Shultz. Yes, MSNBC wastes some time, but we have to stop this coarse-grained, universal castigation. It leads to a “plague on all your houses” mentality that has contributed to widespread public cynicism and the political mess we’re in.
You have silly (ie, “fun”) news items, too, but that doesn’t make you the Drudge Report.
Hhhmmm…they’re all owned by what? Oh…wait for it…they’re all earned by CORPORATIONS!!! BullSh@! is the goal…the objective…the game. Keep the peoples’ heads filled with bullsh@!, so they don’t have time to think about the bullsh@! being fed them by corporations and the GOP…keep their heads filled with bullsh@!, so they never bother to wonder why Republicans are allowed to appear on television, peddle corporate-focus-grouped lies, and NEVER get called out for peddling the corporate-sponsored LIES!!! This isn’t rocket science…the corporations control the media for a reason—so they can control the people. Interesting bit of info: Which 3 countries have the most television stations? Answer: CHINA, RUSSIA, and the U.S. Interesting, no? Why do these 3 countries have so many? I guess, huh, that they want to make sure the people living in those countries are saturated with a perspective.
To be fair, anotherbozo, this is somewhat accurate when you’re talking about the actual news portions of these various networks. All the 24-hr news networks engage in a fair amount of reporting on complete non-stories, in a desperate effort to fill time.
Which isn’t to say that you’re wrong with your central point. You’re not. I’m just saying that it’s not necessarily valid with respect to this particular clip.
The corporate-sponsored bullshit angle (why do we euphemize bullshit? would the ladies blush?) is belied by the race-to-the-bottom begun several decades ago, post-Edward-R.-Murrow, let us say, when polling became a daily affair (Nielsen ratings etc.) and focus groups proliferated and networks found out that cheap games and ultimately “reality” shows got bigger audiences than expensive investigative journalism or educational TV and, equally important, promoted the mindlessness that bought frivolous products. Whom to blame, then? Corporations? Or THE PEOPLE, the lowest common denominator: US.
The only break might come if some nerdy scholar finds that intelligent participation in a TV program yields a better consumer for the advertiser’s product. OR if polls are corrected to include all the people TOO BUSY to participate in them…
Just because I like Olbermann and Maddow does not excuse the fact that just like their competitors, 90% of what MSNBC puts on the air is b.s.
