7 Arrested In Muhammad Cartoon Murder Plot

Again, if Islam is to coexist in the modern world, the fundamentalists are going to have to deal with the rules.

Police in Ireland on Tuesday arrested seven people over an alleged plot to kill a Swedish cartoonist who depicted the Prophet Muhammad with the body of a dog.

Irish police said four men and three women were detained in raids across the south of the country.

The force says the arrests were part of an investigation into a ‘conspiracy to murder an individual in another jurisdiction.’

  1. Maybe one of the rules they might want to start with is : It’s not nice to kill people that aren’t Muslims.
Of course, a little support from the so – called moderate Muslims would be helpful, but they’re too busy complaining every time there’s an Islamic terrorist portrayed on NCIS.

  2. You mean like how Christian right groups complain every time a right wing wacko terrorist is on TV? Yeah, same thing.

Same thing holds true for Christian fundamentalists.

    Self-policing isn’t a strong point of any religious group/sect/cult, unfortunately….

If history is any indicator, it takes a strong shock to the system, so to speak, to precipitate action in one direction or another…and will reflexively jump to the defense of ‘their own’, even if they’re in the wrong.

    Cases:
Council of Nice–to ‘firm up’ doctrine in the face of the Great Schism (Catholicism v Orthodox)

Crusades and Mongol Invasions–did much to generate ‘they’re out to get us’ paranoia in Islam

    Council of Trent–response to Luther’s 95 theses…kicked of 500 years of Inquisition

  7. Except, Oliver , Christian “terrorists” are not operating all over the globe blowing discos and pizzerias, and taking hostages in elementary schools, or killing American soldiers…

The body of a dog? Sounds like the cartoonist got exactly the reaction he was going for. What else could he possibly think would happen?

He hoped people would plot to kill him, QIAB? I don’t think so.

As much as I admired the late Steve Gilliard, one of the things about him that exasperated me was his tendency to apologize for extremists in situations like this. I don’t care how “insulted” or “offended” someone gets, there’s no excuse—none—for threatening or engaging in violence as a result. That’s like saying a rape victim asked for it because she wore “slutty” clothes.

As much as I dislike the rape analogy, I think it’s more like taunting a rapist that he isn’t brave enough to rape you. Will the ensuing rape still be rape? Sure, but goading those you believe to be dangerous is never a great idea.

Why bother taking the message abroad? America is a target rich environment for many a gun-fondling kolpophobe.

That’s the problem with religionists of any stripe. Inevitably the belief that killing people that don’t agree with them seeps it’s way in.

Whether it’s plotting to kill cartoonists or abortion clinic doctors, they loves them some religiously sanctioned murder.

“the belief IN killing people, etc.”
