Brad Paisley’s “American Saturday Night”: An Ode To Multiculturalism

1:46 am EST March 8th, 2010 | Politics | 33 Comments

So, this song is currently the #5 country song in America, and has been as high as #2. As some of you may know, I happen to like pop-country music, but this one passed me by.

It’s interesting because in a genre that tends to stick to a more conservative view of things (for example, Trace Adkins, who I like anyways) this song is a nice love letter to the melting pot here in America.

UPDATE: After some googling I see that this isn’t Mr. Paisley’s first time at the liberal country rodeo. Nice.

    Nice!

You don’t hear too much popular music that’s all about how things are OK.

  2. White Whale says:

Brad Paisley-The Eddie Van Halen of Country. I don’t like the genre but Paisley is alright in my book. Certianly refreshing to hear from a guitar player standpoint.

  3. KXB says:

Another bonus – he is a huge Battlestar Galactica fan.

  4. Mario says:

man he can play!…thanks for turning me on to this guy.

  5. kth says:

Paisley was on public radio’s A Prairie Home Companion the other week, though not singing, just picking with some other guys. But don’t tell anybody, wouldn’t want him to get Dixie-Chicked.

Trace Adkins, on the other hand, couldn’t carry a tune if you gave him 5 trips.

  6. Dave von Ebers says:

Okay, I confess, I like country music too. My iPod is probably the only iPod in the world with the Clash, the Ramones, Dwight Yoakam and the Mavericks. Damn, can Brad Paisley play some guitar.

  7. Tom says:

Not a country fan but admire Paisley for being a liberal in a right wing world. Good for him. He had an unfortunate accident this past weekend when he fell on stage. There is a video at cnn.com. He was badly bruised but otherwise okay. Nothing broken.

  8. Bruce Henry says:

He has some funny novelty songs, too. “Celebrity” and “I’m Gonna Miss Her” are very good. Plus he’s married to the woman who plays the younger sister on “According To Jim.” A real babe.

  9. bobby B says:

Before you lefties try to claim Brad as one of your own, slow down a minute. Appreciating America’s multi-culturalism is certainly not exclusive to liberals.

  10. Bobby : It is when you stereotype conservatives as xenophobic , racist bigots. This is not to mention the fact that our multiculturalism extends all the way back to the Colonial Era.

Also, he carefully avoided any mention of anything Mexican (he wasn’t going out on that limb!) and if there was a lyric about “amnesty for undocumented aliens” , I missed it.

Musically: Another Eagles wannabe, trying to ruin Country by turning it into 70′s pop rock.

Bobby : It is when you stereotype conservatives as xenophobic , racist bigots.

    Not all stereotypes are false.

This is not to mention the fact that our multiculturalism extends all the way back to the Colonial Era.

The slave trade doesn’t count, Frank.

  12. The Crapture says:

deriding the whole notion of multiculturalism has been one of the cornerstones of the last 20 or so years of conservatism because multiculturalism represents a shift away from the hopes of trying to return America to some 1950′s sitcom fantasy-world where you never had to strain your brain to pronounce your neighbor’s name and all the dark folk with foreign names didn’t occupy such a percentage of your homogenized suburban utopia

  13. Some stereotypes are not true, like the one that suggests that scientists are really smart.

BTW, would you happen to know which famous American suggested that German should be our national language ?

Or when the first Italians came to America and why?

You’re just a dope with a big mouth, Mambo.

  14. Felix Helix says:

Scientists are, in general, really smart. About science. I wouldn’t ask one for a critical opinion on Brad Paisley’s chops.

  15. when you stereotype conservatives as xenophobic , racist bigots
It’s not a stereotype if it’s true. A few months ago you were explaining to us your fear of hispanics wiping away white culture.

  16. mambochicken23 says:

Some stereotypes are not true, like the one that suggests that scientists are really smart.

Oh, sick burn, Frank. That one hurt. *rolls eyes*

BTW, would you happen to know which famous American suggested that German should be our national language ?

Or when the first Italians came to America and why?

Appealing to centuries-old events in support of the modern conservative movement is akin to insisting that the Chicago Cubs are the best team in baseball because they were dominant in the dead-ball era.

In other words, it’s fucking stupid.

Scientists are, in general, really smart. About science. I wouldn’t ask one for a critical opinion on Brad Paisley’s chops.

    Bingo.

  18. Appealing to centuries-old events
In other words , you don’t know . It had nothing to do with being a conservative. You’re still a dope with a big mouth.

Felix Helix: Of course, you think scientists are really smart.

  19. mambochicken23 says:

It had nothing to do with being a conservative.

Care to tell me why you bring it up?

Of course, you think scientists are really smart.

…are you interested in making the case that they aren’t, Frank?

You know, your posts are more and more unintelligible these days, Frank. Consider seeing a doctor.

  20. Scooter says:

    Don’t forget “Alcohol”

  21. Technocracygirl says:

“She’s got Brazilian leather boots on the pedal of her German car”

“It’s a French kiss, Italian ice/Margaritas in the moonlight/Just another American Saturday night”

“They’ve got a cooler full of cold Coronas and Amstel light”

I’ll admit, it is a fairly Eurocentric/”America as melting pot” song. It’s not particularly deep, either. And while “Welcome to the Future” is a good recap of the African American civil rights gains of the 20th century, there’s no mention of any other minority group gains. When WttF comes on in the car recently, I can’t help but think that he couldn’t get away with talking about how far we’ve come since Stonewall.

On the other hand, both those songs have a hope for the future, a joy in everyone getting along, and a smile for people who are at least a little different from the stereotypical country fan. Which is what Oliver was talking about, yes?

  22. Care to tell me why you bring it up?

    1) The thread is about a paean to multiculturalism, which Oliver implied was somehow a liberal thing.
    2) Following up on Bobby B’s statement, I pointed out that multiculturalism has been an integral part of of America’s life since Colonial times.
    3) Mambo, being the dope with a big mouth that you are, you made the stupid remark that “the slave trade doesn’t count.”
    4) I asked you two questions, both of which relate to colonial multiculturalism, which you have yet to answer, because you don’t know the answer. Fucking around with me seems to satisfy you so much more than contributing to the thread.
    5) The famous American who suggested that German should be our national language was Benjamin Franklin. The first Italians to come to America came to Jamestown around 1610 to make glass windows, because the Englishman didn’t know how. And also, the first St Patrick’s Day Parade in NYC was in 1762.

My posts are only unintelligible to the unintelligent. Hence, my belief that scientists, such as yourself, aren’t very intelligent.

Oh, and Oliver: I never said I feared that Hispanics would wipe away “white culture”, a) Because I would never use a term like ‘white culture’ – there is no such thing; b) I would never indicate that I fear the natural ebb and flow of social currents; and c) Most likely, what I did say was that liberals were sowing the seeds of isolation and Balkanization in immigrant cultures by not recommending and encouraging acculturation.

I am happy I was given the opportunity to clear that up and educate you lefties at the same time.

  23. mambochicken23 says:

As usual, Frank, you’re an idiot.

It is when you stereotype conservatives as xenophobic , racist bigots. This is not to mention the fact that our multiculturalism extends all the way back to the Colonial Era.

So I read that, and assume that “our multiculturalism” in the second sentence is referring to the “conservatives” in the first sentence. A valid assumption, given the structure of your paragraph. And then I read…

BTW, would you happen to know which famous American suggested that German should be our national language ?

Or when the first Italians came to America and why?

…I assume that you’re still on the topic of conservatives and multiculturalism. Again, a valid deduction, based on how you’re structuring your points. So, believing this to be the case, I wrote…

Appealing to centuries-old events in support of the modern conservative movement is akin to insisting that the Chicago Cubs are the best team in baseball because they were dominant in the dead-ball era.

And I was right, in that you WERE appealing to centuries-old events. It’s only because of your ludicrously bad powers of communication that I didn’t know you were making a specific claim about conservatives.

My posts are only unintelligible to the unintelligent.

Right, Frank. “I know what you are but what am I?” Fucking childish nonsense. I should call you Pee Wee.

Hence, my belief that scientists, such as yourself, aren’t very intelligent.

This is just too stupid for words, Frank. I fail to comprehend your argument because of your terrible communication skills and nonsensical ramblings, and therefore I (and all scientists) aren’t intelligent. Yep, that’s a smart argument. Good call, idiot.

  24. You lefties all need to get over yourselves … Let me clue you in on something. Oliver posts the stories he likes … They say good things about liberals , or bad things about conservatives. People like Ferris and Dennis and myself , attempt to make some sense out of the conservative position or find weaknesses in the liberal position.

All the time you spend attacking us is not just wasted time – it is counterproductive in many ways: It infers you have nothing to say in support of your own beliefs; it implies that you know little about conservative beliefs; and worst of all, it demonstrates that you are not in the least open minded or tolerant – qualities which you criticize others for lacking.

Thanks for the rat comment , Quaker, it confirms what I always suspected of you : That your “reasonableness” has always been a charade, going all the way back to that racism charge you leveled at me years ago.

  25. Quaker in a Basement says:

You’re not gonna cry, are you?

  26. fafaroo says:

    Better trolls, please.

  27. fafaroo says:

    Okay, that was awesome!

Like Zeus throwing down the thunder bolt!

  28. mambochicken23 says:

    What happened here?

  29. fafaroo says:

I believe we are standing in the smoking crater of a flame war snuffed out in its infancy.

  30. Yeah. Pretty much. Time to move along boys.

  31. fafaroo says:

    ROFLMAO! :)

  32. Indeed says:

Could someone provide a cogent (and dispassionate) recap?

  33. No need for a recap. We move on.
