Blue Dog Rep. Bart Gordon Moving Towards Health Care Vote

Now look I think his reasoning is b.s. and I don’t think you should get to call yourself a Democrat – liberal, moderate, conservative – if you vote against health care reform, but at this point all I want are their votes.

The Democrat, Representative Bart Gordon of Tennessee, who is a member of the fiscally conservative Blue Dog coalition, issued a statement on Thursday saying that Mr. Obama’s proposed changes had improved the legislation and would help bring down health costs.

‘Throughout the debate over the past year, I’ve said any responsible health care bill must do two things: reduce overall health care spending and increase access to affordable care,’ Mr. Gordon said in the statement. ‘I voted against the House bill in November because it expanded coverage but did not do enough to bring down costs. I’m pleased to see the discussion moving in a more fiscally responsible direction now.’

Around November or so the con blogs went into a concerted effort to explain to us how the votes weren’t there to pass the bill. And yet it did. I would not put a single dollar down betting against Speaker Pelosi to get votes in the House.

Not to ruffle feathers or anything, but am I the only 1 here that thinks it’s a bit out of line to pass a bill that a clear majority of the public is against? Especially using reconciliation.

    This is political suicide.

    Thanks for your concern.

    Thanks for being a smartass.

  4. Dennis says:

Doing nothing or starting all over this year is apparently the worst of the two evils, Burt. They won’t lose their nutroots base either way, but at least by going this route they don’t have them crawling down their backs for the next 2 months.

Imagine all the dog and pony shows at the White House it would take to make amends with them if they do nothing.

We’re gonna get killed in ’10, and if we pass this via reconciliation, we all darn well know what could happen when we’re on the short end of the stick on a major issue they want possed. Just think we’re opening pandora’s box here by doing it like this.

    I call bullshit.

I do not think that “we” means what you think it means.

  8. merl says:

The MAJORITY of Americans voted for Obama and health care reform. Who cares what wingers want, anyway?

  9. SaveFarris says:

The MAJORITY of Americans voted for “What I’ve proposed is a net spending cut” and “hey John, you can’t tax health plans as income”

On either side of the aisle, I think that pointing to a single reason why people voted the way they did is just masturbation. Everyone needs to stop jacking off to their own ideology.

  11. Burt Flancaster says:

I was under the impression that this site was for democrats, ‘enlightened liberal.’ “We” means them.

If im wrong let me know.

  12. Danton says:

Actually, Burt, we’re only gonna get killed if the job market doesn’t markedly improve.

He obviously does not care about the political ramifications because he’s not run for reelection. I think he is getting some job with the Obama Administration. I guess he knows what side his bread is buttered.
