Bibles For Porn Swap, Oh Boy
Tweet
Oh, I’m sure this didn’t offend anyone.
Members of the Atheist Agenda, a student organization at the University of Texas at San Antonio, are encouraging students to trade in religious texts for pornography this week with their ‘Smut for Smut’ campaign.
In the view of club members, religious texts are as smutty as pornography because they contain violence and torture and spark religious wars. But mostly, it’s a public relations stunt meant to ignite debate and attract new members to the club.
As in past years, the campaign did not disappoint, drawing hundreds to UTSA’s Sombrilla Plaza Monday to either cheer, protest or inquire about the event, and to debate the role of religion in society.

It’s that overcompensation for living in Texas, I suppose.
Considering how much hardcore sex is in the Bible, that’s a pretty fair trade. Nice work folks.
Gimme that ol’ time titillation.
Since it seems atheists aren’t to be allowed to buy signs on billboards or the sides of buses saying nothing more incendiary that “There are other folks who don’t believe in God too!” without being accused of wanting to destroy civilization, I see no reason why they shouldn’t just say, “Fuck it all, we’re gonna be accused of ass-raping baby Jesus no matter what we do, so le’ts go for some gusto!” The people who are going to be shocked, shocked by this campaign are people who believe that atheists should be locked up without trials simply for existing.
Only problem, the people with bibles have better porn collections than what is being offered.
Here I thought porn was violence against women. Maybe it’s only erotica?
I’d turn in my RSV version, but the King James is literature.
Anyway good show–there’s an pr genius in there somewhere.
Some in the atheist movement think this is all for laughs, and point out how horrific the bible is, filled with genocide, rape, murder, sex, instructions on keeping slaves and how to properly and legally beat them, etc, and in this they are completely correct. The bible is a horrible book detailing the barbaric nature of a culture that crossed the bronze and iron ages.
The biggest problem is that few Xians have read the bible. They are unaware of the history of their religion and how evil their god is, all laid out in their holy book. They don’t have the reflective nature required to examine something so central to their lives, something that most of them were indoctrinated into as children, taught that if they doubt, they are damned for eternity. So when you confront them with a bible for pr0n exchange, they can only react with anger.
Because of this, many softer atheists prefer to be less confrontational and keep their criticism to themselves or limited to their cliques. I like the more confrontational, but we need a mix. Purdue’s non-theist group had a Send an Atheist to Church fund drive for a local charity, so there was engagement. At the same time, the have also dressed up as pirates and openly mocked religion by street preaching the gospel of the flying spaghetti monster.
Heh. This is awesome. Good on them.
Robster, you don’t have the foggiest notion how many Christians have read the Bible, but I can bet you that for every Christian who has read some of the Bible, there are 5 Judaeo Chhristians who are familiar with its contents.
“They don’t have the reflective nature required to examine something so central to their lives” Could you possibly be more condescending? This idea that only unintelligent people believe in the Bible and what it can offer besides sex, murder and cruelty, is complete and utter bull shit.
I guess all the intellectual giants who converted to Catholicism , and the scientists who converted from agnostics to believers all suddenly became less intelligent before the epiphany?
What a cliche – ridden, tedious comment …
I can bet you that for every Christian who has read some of the Bible, there are 5 Judaeo Chhristians who are familiar with its contents.
Familiar with it’s contents? What does that even mean?
I’m still trying to figure out who qualifies as a “Judeo-Christian.”
maybe he means Jews for Jesus? I bet even he don’t know what thats supposed to mean.
Familiar with its contents means that many, many people know a lot about what’s in the Bible, even though they have read little of it.
That deep, dark mystery is solved.
Judaism’s fundamental beliefs are based on the first five books of the Bible, known as the Pentateuch. Catholics and all other Christians believe these books are sacred as well.
Thus, a heritage based on the Ten Commandments, among other things, would qualify as “Judaeo-Christian Heritage”.
How much did you lose on that bet, Merl?
Are you three that ignorant about religion? Really? I find that hard to believe. I know most liberals know a lot less than they pretend they do, but you guys are unbelievable.
Catholics and all other Christians believe these books are sacred as well.
Which is why they keep kosher.
…
huh…
Fahrenheit 666?
(*crickets*)
Anyways, the book of Joshua is full of God directed murder and mayhem. And Genesis and Revelations. A few others. Nothing in it that God’s a conservative. Yet. I’m waiting for the Conservatives Bible to come out.
Cracked.com had a really funny “9 Most Badass Bible Verses”. Google that shit if you like Teh Funny. It’s fucking hilarious. And I know Fucking Hilarious.
I love the scene in “Inherit the Wind” when Spencer Tracy gets Frederich March to talk about ‘all that begating’
‘Familiar with its contents means that many, many people know a lot about what’s in the Bible, even though they have read little of it.’
Ohhh…sort of like how many Americans know nothing about the rest of the world despite reading quite a lot about it?
Frank, I have found Xians to be, for the most part, biblically illiterate. They don’t know about the YHWH approved slavery, the YHWH ordered and performed genocide, the laws that make rape a great way to get a bride, and they believe that rapture theology can actually be found in the bible. They may have read the bible, but it wasn’t reading for comprehension.
And when you confront them with these facts, with their own bibles, they can’t admit that these are bad things. They go one of a few ways. One, they inadvertently admit they are only in the religion for hope of an afterlife by referring to Pascal’s Wager. Two, they deflect by saying that part of the bible isn’t important (this happens to be the most common response of liberal Xians). Three, they get mad because they can’t deal with doubt. They don’t have the capacity for self reflection. You fell into the third category.
From my fellow atheists, almost all agree that the best way to become an atheist is to actually read the bible. You will see that YHWH is a ridiculous myth, no more based in reality than Thor or Zeus. Your god just isn’t there.
Also, pointing to my fellow scientists who are believers in Xianity should be just as valid proof for Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, etc. That is to say, it isn’t proof at all but the logical fallacy of the appeal to authority. Are they less of a scientist? Not necessarily. Do they allow superstition to influence their research? If so, they are scientific failures. You have to remain critical and logical, relying on evidence instead of what you wish was true.
Familiar with its contents means that many, many people know a lot about what’s in the Bible, even though they have read little of it.
In that case they know that eating lobster is as much of a sin as a man lying with mankind. Why aren’t they picketing the seafood houses for their sins?
Also, pointing to my fellow scientists who are believers in Xianity should be just as valid proof for Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, etc. That is to say, it isn’t proof at all but the logical fallacy of the appeal to authority.
It would be if I were attempting to prove that God exists or that the Bible is true. But I was not.
What I was saying was that working scientists are intelligent enough to evade your classification of people who read the Bible , and believe it , as people who “don’t have the reflective nature required to examine something so central to their lives.. ”
Atheists study the Bible to look for examples of the sort you provided — certainly not the spirit in which it was presented to me by my teachers in Catholic school, or any number of religious writers and ministers.
And yet, in the same paragraph where I am (wrongly) accused of the logical fallacy of appealing to authority, you say that you have have found Christians [just correcting your spelling] to be, for the most part, biblically illiterate. This is based on a sample of how many Christians that you know and have tested for their Biblical knowledge?
