Content Note

I won’t any longer tolerate the blatant comment hijacking that’s been going on. I’m amazingly lenient with this, but in the last couple months some people think its within their purview to act like this is their blog and post comments that – even with the lax standards I allow – aren’t even remotely related to what’s being talked about.

No mas.

Open threads seem to mitigate that impulse a bit. Just a thought.

  2. Southern Quaker says:

    Thank you.

  3. Jaim says:

Oliver, could you specifically mention the people causing you grief? Because otherwise, and I say this with respect, you’ve got to enforce this stuff. Otherwise just let a thousand flowers bloom and let the trolls continue to dominate your forums. Which in a way I think is a good thing. Right-wing sites will quickly perma-ban anyone who doesn’t toe the line, and that doesn’t happen here to your good credit. I realize you’re in a difficult position re: the assholes who HATE IT HERE SO GODDAMN MUCH LOOK AT ME I’M POSTING FOR THE 30TH TIME IN THIS THREAD ARGH MOMMY I CAN’T HELP MYSELF!!!

But in the wake of the “Let’s all play nice together” ultimatum of a few months ago you really didn’t enforce it.

Right-wingers are threatened by you, and that’s also to your credit. I don’t envy having to moderate them but please be consistent.

  4. Dr. Monkey says:

I could not agree more. I have had a policy of deleting things that are off topic or insulting for quite sometime and it works well.

  5. White Whale says:

    Danke Oliver!

  6. Pryme says:

He’s obviously referring to my Superman comic crack. My bad; it’s evil and I have to stop.

  7. Burn says:

Oliver, just ban the assholes who do it. Simple as that. There’s really one person who comes to mind.

  8. bikelib says:

I think we all know who Oliver’s talking(cough–Dennis–cough) about.

  9. Indeed says:

How about not feeding the trolls. Easier (virtually) said than done–and Moloch knows I’ve been as guilty as anyone on that front–but how about not engaging the self-absorbed assholes, racists, defenders of asshole racists, unintentionally ironic linkers, and LookOverHere dildos. Sure, it’s fun to rhetorically and logically destroy them, repeatedly (they are not particularly shrewd), but they’ll keep coming back for more punishment as the need for attention overrides whatever shame they are capable of feeling. And yes, pushing back against racists and their asshole defenders is important, but let’s see what happens.

Mysteriously, none of the trolls noted above has yet commented on this thread, but one or more may eventually offer a pathetically weak, self-serving, phony-baloney, pseudo-victim apology. Don’t even bother acknowledging that.

Give it a try. See what happens.

  10. Indeed says:

And if one is planning to wager on any of the self-obsessed trolls noted above stopping by this thread to fake apologize to Oliver, bet the over. (But don’t feed ‘em.)

  11. Quaker in a Basement says:

Ask P6 if you can borrow his devowelizer. Effective and funny too!

  12. Jaim says:

When a given troll is responsible for roughly half the comments in a given thread ignoring them is impossible.

  13. Indeed says:

    Try it. See what happens.

  14. Jaim says:

A killfile feature would be great but also a lot to ask. Maybe a cap on number of times you can post per day or per thread.

I still don’t understand how it’s possible to ignore someone who treats another’s blog like his own re: amount of comments.

  15. Duros62 says:

Could never figure out Greasemonkey script, but I second the disemvoweler!

  16. Indeed says:

Huh, still no apology from suspected Blatant Comment Hijacker Troll. Betting the over was indeed the wise choice. I wonder about whom O-Dub was referring in this post. That’s a real chin scratcher.

  17. mambochicken23 says:

    Hell, I’m stumped.

  18. Connie says:

Maybe it’s me. I did try an Intervention on Dennis, since I’m all about love and I was all moved by the snow and the innocence of my idealistc young adult years. Is it me Oliver!!?? Is it me???!!! Please tell me it ain’t me!!???

  19. Indeed says:

Aaaaaaannnnnnndddddd…still no apology. Still no idea who it might have been.

Congrats are in order to the mysterious Blatant Comment Hijacker Troll. Well played sir or madam. Well played, indeed.
