Sarah Silverman Panned At TED Conference

The thing is Sarah Silverman isn’t that funny. The organizers of this event should have known that her entire shtick is a “cute” girl who says “rude” things. It’s tiresome.

I remember talking to a guy who tried to compare her act to Paul Mooney. Not even close.

I love Sarah. If someone hired her before doing their homework, then all they’re doing is putting another feather in Sarah’s cap. Hot, jewey & Funny.

  3. AwkwardSilence says:

Seconded… I thoroughly enjoyed “Jesus is Magic”, and absolutely love the Sarah Silverman Program. It doesn’t hurt that it’s stocked with former cast members of Mr. Show and gets its fair share of plus cameos.

That said, she’s definitely hit-or-miss and caters to a very specific sense of humor, so she was an absolutely terrible selection for TED. It’s rare to see her in public & out of character, so they should have gone in a safer direction.

But the whole thing may be worth it just for her “You should be nicer to the last person on earth w an aol account” tweet to Steve Case.

Thirded. You’re way off on this one, OW. “Nazis are a-holes… they’re cute when they’re little, though,” is the stuff of genius.

Also, if you read the article at your link, it’s not about her being panned, it’s about TED organizer Chris Anderson (and later, Steve Case) personally panning her. It sounds like the crowd was about 50/50 on her (which is kind’ve par for the course for Silverman).

If you don’t like her, OW… fine. But don’t be disingenuous with what the article on the other side of your link says.

  6. Mart says:

Isn’t Sarah following the normal stand up comedic formula?; “xxxxx” white/black/asian/jew/etc. – guy/gal says rude thing about their and others cultures? Depending on your bias they are hilarious, funny, OK, irritating or obscene.

  7. jfizz says:

Come on, The Sarah Silverman Program is the funniest show on TV. OW, can’t follow you on this one.

  8. Jamey says:

Silverman: Not especially funny, and not especially cute. Basically an asshole–even moreso since she’s gotten rich.

  9. Dick Woodcock says:

I’m casting my vote for not funny.

She’s cute, so I’ve tried to give her & her shows a chance. I just don’t think she’s that funny. Like someone said above, she follows the same formula most comedians use. The things coming out of that cute mouth is supposed to make her more funny, but it doesn’t.

  10. Jaim says:

I think she’s very funny. But that’s subjective.

What’s beyond debate is why did the TED people expect her to do anything but her offensive humor?

And making fun of Steve Case and AOL? The Danny’s former company? How could anyone have a problem with that?

  11. Wilfredo says:

And yet you love Jessica Alba! @OW

I think Sarah Silverman is pretty damn funny (some of her skit writing is crazy orginal), but she definitely appeals to specific demographic/sensibility; and geez, if you don’t know to match your entertainment to your function, don’t blame the entertainment! Pretty dufus move for such a ‘smart’ outfit….

  13. wiz says:

    sorry…original

This just makes me sick. I’ve worked with people who have developmental disabilities for three years now and constantly have to deal with the stigma, the segregation, the debasing and the complete lack of confidence in these wonderful people just so they can get a job at half the minimum wage. Yes, when they get jobs, employers aren’t even required to give them minimum wage. They go through a time assessment and they get paid depending on how long it would take them to complete a task compared to a “normal” person. And yet, a “normal” person can go to any job, get a guaranteed rate and then sit on their ass for eight hours and do nothing. I know this because I’ve worked in retail and it is prevalent. Yet the people Silverman calls “retarded” do the best they can do every single day just to be accepted. She disgusts me.
