20th Anniversary Of Nelson Mandela Release

Man, it feels like this was just yesterday. I remember my mom waking me up to make sure I watched it live. It feels strange to think that I once lived in a world where apartheid was real and Mandela was behind bars.

Celebrations are to be held to mark 20 years since the release from prison of Nelson Mandela, a key step towards ending apartheid in South Africa.
In Cape Town his former wife Winnie will lead a march from the prison where he spent the final months of his 27-year imprisonment.

When I was in London in January, I got this picture of Mr. Mandela’s statue in Parliament Square:

A good time to remember Steven Biko and others who didn’t survive those bad old days. But also to celebrate Mandela, who did more than Gandhi or King or George Washington or practically anyone else to lead a people peacefully from oppression to democracy. Castro and Mugabe are two more typical revolutionary templates. The more time passes, the more striking is the Mandela miracle, and the source has to be the man himself. He’s really a giant among us.

Don’t forget Desmond Tutu. The Reconciliation Commissions went a long way towards healing the wounds left by Apartheid, and allowed South Africa to move forward without violent retribution.

Let us also take time to remember the man who helped make his imprisonment possible.
