Sorry, But It Was A Football Game

Congrats to the Saints and their fans, but the stories that try to put an endcap on the horror of Katrina by essentially saying “See, now they won a Super Bowl” are just trivializing what went down.

Even for those of us who are diehard, nutty NFL fans – they are a diversion, entertainment, a novely – not real life.

Absolutely right. I felt the same when the owner raised the Lombardi Trophy and yelled, “we’re back!” I don’t want to be a noodge, but the owner of the Saints suffered not at all from Katrina. And the success of his team doesn’t do a damn thing for ordinary people. Sure, some of them are NFL fans, Saints fans, and they might get a week or two of happiness, but that’s all. (Cf. The numerous championships won by Detroit’s sports teams other than the Lions did nothing to alter or abate the decline of the city and the erosion of the metro area’s once large and vibrant middle class.)
