Christopher Nolan Working On Superman Reboot?

Superman ReturnsI know that I’m in a minority of people who liked Superman Returns, but I understand the movie’s flaws to the non-diehards as well as the need for Warner Bros./DC to have a flagship character like Superman be on the big screen. So the idea that Christopher Nolan, the guy who’s done such a bang-up job on rebooting Batman will have some role in refreshing Superman sounds like good news.

I hope Warner understands that making Superman “dark” is not the answer. Superman is the counterbalance to Batman, the yin to his yang. Some have said that makes Superman less complex and less interesting. I of course, completely disagree, and I hope they can translate that difference on screen.

I hope whoever ends up making the next Superman movie understands that “dark” does not mean “realistic.” Superman doesn’t need to be a social outcast or loner, but the audience needs to be reminded why we don’t see him going around punching people like Batman, Spider-Man or even friggin’ Thor: (1) he was raised to be a passive fighter, and (2) the massive property damage that would occur.

We got a hint of this in Superman 2, and that needs to be explored and expanded. Unfortunately, Singer gave Supes a kid and now the next movie has to address that.

Personally, if they make Lex into more of a fixture of Metropolis (like his evil 90′s businessman persona) and bring in someone who can tug at Superman’s heartstrings as well as put up a good fight (like Brainiac) I’d be happy.

    Hint for future writer/director:

Good drama requires conflict, suffering and doubt. While Superman is very powerful, making him a walking, talking God eliminates all suffering and doubt, and therefore, all drama. Example: killing off a major character should not be resolved by having Superman fly backwards in time to keep that character from dying. Unless your target audience is 8 years old.

It’s not about making him “dark”. Superman is actually one of the worst comic book characters ever. He’s alwasy supposed to be “perfect” and that’s just boring. What makes Batman interesting (and Spider-Man, and Wolverine, and Preacher, And Green Lantern and on and on) is that they’re flawed human. Despite their powers, what makes them interesting is who they are AS A PERSON.

Superman just isn’t and interesting character. All the interest is in his superpowers, so every movie turns in to a spectacular display of his powers. Noone actually CARES about him. Bryan Singer tried in in Superman Returns with him almost “dying” but the audience new it was bullshit.

You don’t have to make him “dark”, but make him interesting as a person, and people will be hooked. That’s what Nolan did with Batman. That’s what Raimi did with the first two Spider-Mans. You cared about the hero outside of his powers.
