White House Press Corps Calls Out The Waaahmbulance

9:30 am EST February 8th, 2010 | Media | 18 Comments

Howard Kurtz lives down to his reputation as the mainstream media’s stenographer by giving voice to the whinings of the hite House press corps that President Obama hasn’t given them enough attention or changed their diapers enough. You see, President Obama has instead preferred to give interviews to anchors or especially to go directly to the public via YouTube and town halls (and not prescreened ones like with Bush).

This has the gaggle of press jackals who spend all day thinking they’re going to get a real “gotcha” in the daily press gaggle mighty upset. They want to be Woodward and Bernstein without actually working at it, and the President not attending to their whims makes them vewy vewy mad.

The White House Press Corps has no doubt endured significant ribbing from the elite journalists in Washington that Obama refers to them as the ‘White House Press Corpse‘ and they are just being really sensitive right now.

We should all probably cut them some slack.

  2. Bloix says:

Number of press conferences held in GW Bush’s first year: 19. Number in Obama’s first year: 27. Notice that you can’t find these figures or any figures comparing Obama with any past president in Kurtz’s article.

In tribute to Artie Lange, I say “Waaah!”

  4. Jay says:

Bloix, first of all, the comparison to President Bush is irrelevant.

Also, didn’t President Obama promise to regularly hold such press conferences? I’m pretty sure he made that promise last year. If so, doesn’t the press corps then have a legitimate gripe?

  5. Repack Rider says:

As Kurtz pointed out, President Obama is everywhere, taking questions from the GOP, making YouTube videos, adding color commentary at a basketball game.

What he isn’t doing is pandering to courtiers who expect such pandering, and who will then tell us what the president “meant” to say, because by interpreting for us rubes, they consolidate their own power. Think ex-PFC Wintergreen from Catch-22, a guy who runs the switchboard and has no authority, except that all messages pass through him, so he modifies war plans to suit himself.

Helen Thomas is the only member of the WH press corps deserving of any respect, and in fact, she gets it ALL.

  6. Tyro says:

the comparison to President Bush is irrelevant.

Not if the guy, and you, never managed to work up the outrage to complain before. What’s the matter, ass, were you too much of a cowardly wimp to criticize Bush in front of your friends before, but now you have permission to cry like a baby that Obama isn’t holding enough press conferences? Cripes, find something else to whine about. You held your tongue for eight years because you were afraid like a little child that your right-wing friends would hate you. Suck it up and be thankful you get a president who’s better than little whiners like you deserve, Jay.

That’s all I see from Republicans these days– a bunch of moral cowards who couldn’t bother to get off their asses when someone as stupid and incompetent as Bush was came into power but now scream like harpies about someone doing a better job: whatever it takes to suck up to your right wing loser friends, I guess. You don’t have the moral judgment to have an opinion about this, you Bush loving suckup.

adding color commentary at a basketball game == holding regular press conferences (?!?)

    You guys are brilliant. Really.

Obama’s problem isn’t that he’s not talking. It’s that he’s not listening. The American people DO. NOT. WANT. either his health care plan nor his “spend and spend” budget.

    WHO DAT!!!!!!!!!

Six months into Obama’a first term and Kurtz says Obama is overexposed.

Six months after that, he’s crying about this now?

  9. kwutor says:

Wow the trolls are extra-sensitive this morning. Just say the name “Bush and their diapers start twisting. The post and the comment were about the media fellas, not the republicans. Although after the last ten years, I can see why you confuse the two.

  10. Bloix says:

Jay, do a little googling and you’ll find that Obama has given more press conferences than the average president in his first year. And if you think he made a promise and he’s breaking it, then use your computer and give us a link. Don’t waste our time with questions that you haven’t bothered to find the answers to.

  11. merl says:

I thought I remembered a whole lot of whinging about “overexposure” not that long ago. And hearing shit like what “”bush did doesn’t matter coming from people who bitched about what Clinton did (in their imaginations) for 8 fucking years is a bit much, isn’t it?

  12. Bruce Henry says:

Don’t hold back. Tell us how you really feel.

‘We should all probably cut them some slack.’

They’re primarily a bunch of hacks and corporate shills, weaned on a steady diet of bs from a previous administration that saw nothing wrong in silencing their critics and stacking the room with their personal whores.

    Eff them.

  15. jrfunkenstein says:

‘I’m pretty sure he made that promise last year. If so, doesn’t the press corps then have a legitimate gripe?’

He’s held more than his predecessor, while enduring a crapload more nonsense, personal attacks and media slander than any President in history, but of course he’s just not doing enough for your liking.

Maybe he should just land on an aircraft carrier while clearing some brush.

Which you glean from listening to Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck?

You might as well as the cat.
