Oprah: Ambassador Of Middle East Peace?
The queen of all talk shows seems to be extending her power to middle eastern understanding.
In a region where people overwhelmingly disapprove of American policy toward the Arab world, Oprah has quietly emerged as a better cultural ambassador than any public diplomacy effort in recent memory. As the months passed, I heard more from fans of Oprah. They are women representing a spectrum of class and religious orientation — conservative women, veiled women, liberal women and even women who don’t speak much English but read the Arabic subtitles.

This is fascinating. And it’s what we used to call “soft power” before neocon bedwetting chickenhawks tried to re-write history and declare that regime change only happens through direct military conflict, despite the glaring example of the USSR and the rest of the Soviet bloc.
Yes, this is just what the world needs, more celebrities getting involved in politics. American culture’s fascination with fame is leading us down a dark road, and partially explains why we keep electing poor leaders; the shiny turd beats the dirty diamond time after time. And I’m not speaking particularly about the Presidency, and certainly not about one party over another.
It sounds like the muslim world is getting involved with mainstream, hard-to-object-to Oprah. Kind of the opposite of your little tantrum.
