Glenn Beck Needs A History Lesson

11:52 am EST February 4th, 2010 | News | 19 Comments

That won’t really help, because the man is stupid on purpose. But he tries to say here that Nazis got their propaganda techniques from progressives. This is part of his long (not working) campaign to get “progressive” to have the same negative connotation often associated with liberal. That aside, it was the conservative right in America who defended Nazism. Figures like Father Coughlin and the American First types were the most vehemently opposed to American involvement and those groups on the right also involved themselves in anti-semetism. These groups kept on at their aid and comfort for Nazi Germany up until the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Then two liberal, progressive Presidents led the country to victory in its most important war ever.

Prescott Bush kept his aid and comfort going far past that date

this all goes back to Doughboy’s Liberal Fascism book…just another phase in the plan to make liberals/progressives the permanent Bad Guy of American politics.

    Liberal Fascism

Jonah can mention the dangers of corporate+government concentrations of power while simultaneously displaying admiration for Reagan and Bush. He likes Jesus, and also invading countries for dubious reasons.

the plan to make liberals/progressives the permanent Bad Guy of American politics.

I dunno if it’s a plan as much as a self-comforting rationalization. Every time you base your perception of reality on a bunch of disparate conflicting unsupported beliefs, you’ve gotta keep from going wack somehow. Most wingnuts do it by keeping their focus on nitpicking Obama’s every last move, vilifying and scapegoating The Left, liberals and progressives, and by repeating Republican talking points as common folk wisdom.

OTOH, it’s been quite entertaining watching long time conservatives slowly peel off the wingnut onion, saying “I just can’t do this shit anymore.”

  5. timmy says:

I’ve gotta qualify the above comment. Most rank and file wingnuts do this stuff. I’m not sure if conservative “leaders” like Glenn Beck, Ann Coulter, Sarah Palin… even believe the crap they spew. At least not nearly as much as they believe in keeping the government off their pile of loot.

  6. It would make for a much more interesting piece if Mr Beck had actually said progressives had supported Nazis, or that conservatives had not. But Mr. Beck said neither of these things I (despite the fact that some liberals, and some conservatives did support the Nazis).

What he said was that Nazis used propaganda techniques devised by progressives.

He needs more than a history lesson. He needs an intervention from his sane friends and family.

Respectfully. You have been fed a load of bullshit. And you don’t appear to have any the wiser.

That should read “and you don’t appear to be any the wiser.

Of course he did, and we are supposed to take GLENN BECK’s word for that because this man is such an authority on stuff?

Yes, he said it. Yes, he is an idiot, and that is just more evidence. Yes he deserves to be mocked, as does anyone who takes him as anything but a cruel joke on the poorly educated.

    Did you have a point?

  11. Luke and Repack ( and Oliver? )

Since none of you have addressed the issue of whether or not the Nazis used propaganda techniques devised previously, why should I?

Luke, surely you can dig up one scintilla of evidence to refute a whole load of bullshit, can’t you?

My point is that you are not only disagreeing with Beck about a point he never made, you are insulting him for saying something he didn’t say!

Since you seem compelled to hate him, could you at least hate him for something he said or did?

    Frank,

I believe the point of the post was to demonstrate what an idiot Beck is, not to debate his idiotic claims as though they represented thought. If he had claimed that he had miniature fairies dancing every night in his garden, I wouldn’t bother arguing against the existence of fairies, I would just point out that his irrational belief speaks for itself.

You are entitled to your opinion of me, but I will not dignify Beck’s accusation by trying to “prove” that the Nazis weren’t “liberals.”

Perhaps you could identify some of Hitler’s “liberal” ideas and actions for us. Was it the suppression of free speech and the press? The Holocaust and slave labor? The invasion of countries that had not harmed Germany? (Whoops, pretty close to home.)

    Work with me.

Wingnut Debate 101: Taking things out of context.

“This president I think has exposed himself over and over again as a guy who has a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture….I’m not saying he doesn’t like white people, I’m saying he has a problem. This guy is, I believe, a racist.” – Fox News July 28, 2009

“Al Gore’s not going to be rounding up Jews and exterminating them. It is the same tactic, however. The goal is different. The goal is globalization…And you must silence all dissenting voices. That’s what Hitler did. That’s what Al Gore, the U.N., and everybody on the global warming bandwagon [are doing].” –”The Glenn Beck Program,” May 1, 2007

“So here you have Barack Obama going in and spending the money on embryonic stem cell research. … Eugenics. In case you don’t know what Eugenics led us to: the Final Solution. A master race! A perfect person. … The stuff that we are facing is absolutely frightening.” –”The Glenn Beck Program,” March 9, 2009

Guess you’re right Frank. Beck could not possibly be saying anything more than. “The Nazis learned their propaganda from the progressive movement in the United States.”

We have “only” ourselves to blame for this mess:

This quote came from the Czech Republic. Someone has it all figured out. It’s sad that most of the people of the US don’t.

“The danger to America is not Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the presidency. It will be easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president.

The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails us. Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince.

The republic can survive a Barack Obama, who is, after all, merely a fool. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools such as those who made him their president.”

He was very careful not to say that. BTW, talking about depriving people of their rights (including their right to their lives) as an argument that Nazis were not related to liberals, is not a line of argument I’d want to pursue, if I were you.
    Classic liberalism is dead – D – E – D – D — DEAD!

Totalitarianism is what the new liberalism is all about.
