The American Red Cross is pledging an initial $200,000 to assist communities impacted by this earthquake, and is prepared to take further action as local responders assess the situation. As with most earthquakes, we expect to see immediate needs for food, water, temporary shelter, medical services and emotional support.

The American Red Cross is accepting donations through our International Response Fund.

Thanks for reminding me to give Oliver. The devastation there sounds horrible. Hopefully others will help if they can.

I just made a donation, and my prays are with them.

  3. Must suck to be in Haiti right now. Perhaps this calamity will shift the focus away from really important topics that have America enthralled.

    Enjoy.

Have my issues with Red Cross. Check out and give to OPERATION USA @ OPUSA.org. You give, it’ll get there. An AMAZING charity doing work for 30 years. Just check out website, you’ll see. No matter what we’re suffering in the United States, it’s nothing compared to what is going on in Haiti right now. Open our hearts, and if possible, our checkbooks. It’s all about love……..

Seems odd that we haven’t heard anything about damage to the Dominican Republic. The epicenter of the quake wasn’t far from the border between the two. Maybe the major population centers in the DR are further east and weren’t badly damaged?

You sound like a con. I can’t believe you

  7. anotherbozo says:

@Dave: Yes, they are further east, and the epicenter was the the west of Port-au-Prince. The DR is going to send aid itself…

I was just reading out the history of Haiti, as it happens. After they declared independence from France they were quarantined by the rest of the (colonialist) world–nobody was allowed to trade with them. Our relations with them ever since have been so execrable that no aid we could ever provide would even the scale… not to inject politics into the situation. I’m just sayin’.

Though you are said to be one of the poorest.
Those who have seen you have seen a treasure chest.
I know that right now you are put to the test,
But the day will come when you will finally rest.

Another, you are so right. And, the US has propped up so many puppet governments in Haiti, including this one that took over after a military coupe in 2004 by the the Bush Administration. All of the Islands in the region is suffering economically, but hangs on through tourism. Haiti has been a punished since 1791. Perhaps out of this disaster like the Phoenix will rise from it’s ashes and build to become the island it has never had the chance to behttp://upsidedownworld.org/main/content/view/1348/51/

My charity, SOS Children’s Villages has been in Haiti for 30 years and has two villages and other facilities there, supporting about 3,000 orphaned children and adults. We haven’t been able to get in touch with our villages yet and our national office (just 6 miles from the epicenter) has collapsed. We did hear from our national Haitian director and our Dominican Republic office. They’re organizing relief efforts right now.

We’re now looking for 800 child sponsors and donations to support our relief efforts (water, food, shelter, trauma counseling). http://www.sos-usa.org.

Oliver, I think you told me you’re familiar with our organization from Jamaica. Please spread the word, if you can. Many, many charities are at work on the ground or preparing for many weeks of post-disaster relief. All of them need help.
