Best Buy had an entry-level Sony BR for $125. Office Depot had an off-brand model for $80.
I’d have bitten, but I don’t have an HD set to play it on – PLUS I have hundreds of DVDs that I haven’t gotten around to watching. I’m not about to start another new collection.
Moi non plus. Should we throw out our perfectly good DVD players to get a Blu-Ray? Doesn’t compute.
“Throw out,” no. Donate to charity or to somebody still using VHS, yes.
It still sucks that the inferior technology won out over HD-DVD (Sony packing it into the supposed to be “smash hit” PS3 bought studio loyalty out the gate) but watching movies in HD and lossless audio is the way to do it.
The load times are a BITCH (almost twice a slow as HD-DVD) but other than that, audio and visuals are the same. Depending on the movie and the transfer (Warner Bros. and LionsGate do the best transfers by FAR) the movies should look and sound awesome.
Your SD DVDs will look better played on a Blu-ray player than they do on your DVD player – so don’t worry about that, but you willl need an HD TV.
Load times are a bit slow- but just get in the habit of popping the disc in before you go to the kitchen for drinks and snacks.
The difference between playing a Blu-ray disc on an HD TV and playing a DVD on an SD TV is at least as dramatic as the difference between DVD and VHS. Still, prices only get lower on this stuff, so waiting won’t hurt you.
I believe you will find that most Blu-Ray DVD players will also handle SD DVDs.
While it’s pricier, the PS3 functions as a fantastic blue ray player (better than the majority of standalones, in fact).
It’ll also upconvert your SD DVDs & has some pretty great games in its library (Uncharted 2, Infamous and Demon’s Souls are pretty rockin’).
So, if you like video games and you’re on the fence, it’s a pretty great bundle.
