Jamaica’s Miss Lou

Thought this vid might interest you all a bit. It’s a little clip of “Miss Lou” aka Louise Bennett, who passed a way a few years ago. She was a much beloved cultural figure in Jamaica, who was all about preserving and educating about the unique cultural elements of Jamaica. I remember her most from my time in Jamaica (I lived there for a few years in the early ’80s) as the host of a kids show where she would tell stories about Brother Anansi (aka Anansi aka Brer Rabbit). Good stuff. When she passed away there was a huge national outpouring towards her. I guess you could say she was something like a combo of Mr. Rogers and Maya Angelou. Something like that.

Jack Mandora, me no choose none.

  1. Bennett was not a good writer but a fine performer; a classic example of how someone could be so-so in the creative arts, but great in the performing arts.

To read a book of her writing or poems is to shrug, but a video like this does her justice.

    Good mention, Oliver.

I could listen to the Jamaican accent all day, even more than the Irish brogue. Nowhere else is English so musical. I’d watch C-Span if they showed the Jamaican parliament; I’d listen to spoken books if… does Miss Lou have one out?

  3. Wow, I didn’t know any video existed of Miss Lou; can’t wait to show my Moms. Thanks OW.

    Eh eh….but waaait…..

Haw! The very thought of it makes me happy.
