A post over at the Seminal is taking “liberal elitism” to task for not taking the Tea Party people seriously, and that that will lead to the election of Sarah Palin and other such ilk.

While I have long argued that there is too much elitism on the left for my tastes, there’s a wide gulf between holding your nose in the air for no good reason and dumbing yourself down in order to appeal to the lowest common idiotic denominator. Suck is the case with the Tea Party group and their leaders like Palin.
Far from the liberals in the ’70s who were clearly not responsive enough to the middle class, leading to the rise of Nixon and resentment politics, today’s left has gone to great lengths to be a big tent. So much so that some of our biggest fault lines are internal and don’t involve the Republicans at all. But far from the pre-Clinton great society types, todays liberals understand that without blue collar people on our side we don’t advance as a movement.
The problem is that the vast majority of the issues brought up by the tea party types and Palin are idiotic. These aren’t people with the traditional lower-middle class concerns of Americans (which is my family background) but instead these are people who largely believe the conspiracy du jour, whether that involves secret armies, the president’s “true” nationality, or Nancy Pelosi’s “death panels” that are set up to pull the plug on Grandma.
While the concerns of many white, middle-class people are worthy causes and should be addressed by liberals (and are), it is not elitism to treat this roving band of conspiracy nuts for the cretins they are or associate with. This would be akin to President Johnson in 1964 undertaking a federal committee to study the mind control powers of fluoridated water. That would be asinine.
Liberals have in the past allowed the ivory tower set to exert too much control over the Democratic party. That resulted in a narrow focus and deserved electoral losses. But the idea that the tea party movement represents any sort of rational discourse deserving of recognition and outreach is absurd. These are, by and large, the same band of stupid people we have always had in this country, whether they were in favor of submission to the British empire, secession from the union, alliance with Hitler, or decrying the president a “half breed Muslim terrorist”, we owe them no recognition or inclusion in the important discussion about the direction of American society.

A good rule of thumb is that if your opponents can’t tell the historical difference between Socialism and Fascism, and they insist the president wasn’t born in America, they aren’t worth paying attention to. Indeed, they should be heartily mocked.
But this is just trickle-down High Broderism. “We must respect both sides of the argument, even when they are calling the president a Communist!”
I’ll take great pleasure in watching them work to destroy the GOP leading up to 2010 and 2012 elections.
Was thinking very much the same thing myself just yesterday. I love to get into intelligent discussions with folks who disagree with me. Sometimes they make me change my mind. Always they make me examine my position and that’s a good exercise to go thru from time to time.
Alas, finding folks (admittedly on both sides, although more often on the right) to have a reasoned discussion with is difficult. And a quick litmus test is to ask “Do you think there are legitimate questions about Obama’s being a natural born US citizen?”
Any answer other than an unequivocally “Of course not.” and the person simply isn’t worth talking to.

It’s not just about someone’s views being different from mine. It’s about their views being factually incorrect. See: “death panels”, the birther controversy, etc.

It is populated with the types you describe for the majority, but once you realize their naivete most of them aren’t all that bad; for the most part they just enjoy being arrogant and elitist when not many of them have the real world experience or accomplishment to walk the walk. Dennis, for 30 years I was NY Stock Exchange Floor Broker. Now I’m a compliance officer for a large investment firm. What do they have to be so elitist about? A piece of paper that says the’re smart? LOL, God I love those types. In my line of work for 30 years, we used to eat guys like that for lunch. Usually within a few weeks they were gone, when they realized that all their book smarts meant nothing in the real world. If you’re in the securities business like I am, you’ll know exactly what I mean. When you take the Series 7 Exam (the basic broker’s liscense exam) the very first thing the instrucor tells you in the class is that 99% of what you learn in the review class will be useless to you whan you leave! My point being of course, that I don’t care HOW much you learn in a class, nothing takes the place of real life experience. That’s the point I’m trying to make to my new friend mambo, but I get the strong feelng he will respond in some vulgar, smart ass way to try to prove how smart he is to me and anyone else on here who happens to be watching.

The First Amendment gives Oliver the right to criticise the Teabaggers. He doesn’t need “credentials” or your permission to do so.
I’m pretty sure Oliver wouldn’t call anyone “stupid” who disagreed civilly about this policy or that, but when people march in mobs carrying signs about Obama’s “Kenyan birth certificate” or “death panels” or “watering the tree of liberty,” those people are, indeed, stupid motherfuckers. But, don’t I too have the right to question someone’s motives on here as well as per MY First Amendment Rights? Bush II squandered a budget surplus from Clinton on two failed wars. The stock market actually dropped under his watch. His tax cuts for George Soros helped bankrupt the country as quickly as any president possibly could.
The first bank bailouts occurred under Bush’s watch. Obama’s stimulus plan, according to the Wall Street Journal, has created jobs and softened the Bush Recession. Much of the stimulus hasn’t kicked in yet, so as we move out of the Bush Recession the employment numbers will hopefully improve as quickly as possible.
The teabaggers were absolutely silent while a white Republcan president drove our economy into the toilet. Now that a black Democrat is in charge and some economic factors are improving in less than a year of his first term, we’re supposed to take you guys complaining about fiscal discipline?

And before you use that to dismiss me as one of those left-wing kooks, there is reason to suspect that Bush and Cheney broke laws (outing of Valerie Plame, warrantless wiretapping, etc.) and, that being the case, an investigation is warranted to to find out if any laws were actually broken. And if the investigation determines that they were, then a trial, a “prosecution” is what follows.
Note, I’m not calling for investigations because I disagree with their political views. I’m not saying they are guilty and should be jailed. I’m saying there is reason to suspect they are guilty and the proper due course is to investigate and take appropriate actions based on the results of that investigation.

I also think it will HELP your economy. Think of expanded health care as a tax break for businesses. American companies love it up here for that reason and the Canadian economy is on a quicker recovery than your economy, possibly because of the lighter burden that public health care placeson businesses. This last point is pure speculation but the former point is the absolute truth.
