Maryland Is One Of Ten Happiest States

Happiest states (7 blue, 3 red)
New research suggests U.S. states with wealthier, better educated and more tolerant residents are also happier on average.
The reasoning is that wealthy states can provide infrastructure and so it’s easier for residents to get their needs met. In addition, states with a greater proportion of artists and gays would also be places where residents can freely express themselves.
On average, well-being was highest in the Mountain states and West Coast states, followed by the Eastern Seaboard and then the Midwest and Southern states.
Here are the top 10 states and their average well-being scores (out of a possible 100 points):
– Utah: 69.2
– Hawaii: 68.2
– Wyoming: 68
– Colorado: 67.3
– Minnesota: 67.3
– Maryland: 67.1
– Washington: 67.1
– Massachusetts: 67
– California: 67
– Arizona: 66.8

Wonder who made the bottom ten.
I can attest to this list as I live in AZ after living in the DC metro area for 20 years. People are SO much nicer out here and they’re not all trying to claw over each other in a mad rush every day.
Maybe the space and light has something to do with it.
This is interesting, except it’s virtually impossible to measure happiness because it’s inherently subjective. I would be interested to see the methodology used.
Well, MD is in the DC metro area – at least where I live, but that’s an in-n-out proposition for me. DC is just where I work and go to museums. And I’m not in the kind of job where I have to deal with corporate bs.
Which one is “blue”: Colorado or Arizona? I could see arguments for … neither, but labeling them “purple” wouldn’t be out of the question.
And measuring quality of life by how gay a state is?
Maryland is nice. I could see myself moving back some day. It’s definitely better than Virginia where I also lived. They tax you for owning a car there.
states with a greater proportion of artists and gays would also be places where residents can freely express themselves.
Sounds tautological to me.
I lived in Elkton for nearly a year, and that area didn’t strike me as particularly happy. It also struck me as less urbane than Wasilla, AK… which is why I’m now living and working in northern NJ…
I lived way down in the burbs off 95 south. It took forever to drive up to DC each morning and I hated it more than anything. Sitting in traffic wondering why I am doing this. Whenever I lived near a Metro stop then I would use it every day, but that wasn’t too often.
I’ve lived in Utah and it is definitely not one of the happiest places to live. I question the entire methodology because there is some delusion going on with results like that.
I think people are happiest when their needs are met. Access to culture and higher education offer opportunities for self expression and improvement which lead to a fufilling life. I think
alot of urban areas offer more stimulation for people than rural areas.
Thats why religon has become so important as a social function in the rural parts of America. It helps remedy the lonliness and isolation of rural life. I think people need to look at whats happening in small town America.
There is a real need for some kind of access to culture.
Walmart and church are the only places where the community meets on a regular basis.
I think Utah is happiest because they use so many anti-depressants there.
YAWWWWWWWWWWN…me thinks it’s time for some new material.
Complaining about taxes? I KNEW Jaim was a closet conservative.
PG County IS Awesome!
I guess the folks doing this survey haven’t visited Baltimore City or some of the surrounding counties.
Everywhere I go I’m in a pretty happy state.
Or they know that all of MD isn’t Baltimore…
Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon(D) is accused of buying personal items using gift cards donated to her office. What a happy place, and what a huge piece of shit!!

No! Everyone in Colorado is NOT happy. We’re all sad. Despondent! Miserable! Don’t come here, easterners, you’ll hate it!
Really!
Maryland related…nice move by the Terps and the Gamecocks.
