Maybe you've been too pampered so far to know just how much stress reduces one's performance at everything.
It takes little training to put a bullet in a paper target, it's another story to shoot a human - a crazy, dangerous human, but still a human, in case you enjoy forgetting it - while putting yourself in danger and knowing that taking one second too many means your name will be on the "killed" list, and nevermind the people around - I don't know how many were on the scene, but it doesn't take that much for a situation to feel chaotic.
That's a hell of a lot of pressure, and I don't imagine someone like you, or most people actually, would be competent at anything while facing it.

I'm glad the shooter is alive. I'm glad the wounded are alive. I'm sorry for the dead. I've never heard of an officer doing this, nor for that matter a psychiatrist. I hate him, but I want to hear what's going wrong in his head. Am I wrong for this?

@Carlos--

"...she risked her life and sacrificed her safety to save the lives of the people she was entrusted to protect. Nothing Palin will ever do can come close to that."

I think I prefer to apply Christian ethics here, even though I am not one of the elect myself: I hope she does. Not that I wish for Palin to find herself in the middle of something ghastly -- we must not wish that even on really awful people. (Well, if it's direct retribution for something they did? This is getting a bit too tricky for me.) No, but one can hope that in whatever she finds herself in, and we all face something awful in our lives, Palin does something big, and justifies, at least in some part, her so-far apparently quite worthless existence.

That's my goody position for the day, and I'm sticking to it.

If you want somebody to take your bet, though, you've got the wrong guy.

Repack,
Same chick, same events, same hero, same feelings of admiration.

Spider,
A firearm is a tool, nothing more. Anyone with commen sense and a moderate amount of hand eye coordination can use one fairly effectively. Top tier marksmanship is another matter, much like pro sports the bell curve in action. This was not a case of marksmanship but courage and average competency with a tool.

Jaim,
"Wow, you’re really trying to turn this into a blue state/red state thing."

LOL, As if the rest of you don't rise to the bait and wallow in partisanship. You're so easy to tweak.

... and not a one of them I've met runs away from her commitments or whines about shit they themselves caused.

You insult them by even any slight comparison with the AWOL from her responsibilities Wasilla Hillbilly.

AO, how will you feel about Ms. Munley if she turns out to be gay and married to another woman? Would that affect your view of her courage?

<i>she’s a gutsy hero and I’ll bet she’s not a liberal.</i>

On what basis? You can't be liberal and courageous at the same time? Why don't you explain this dichotomy to us?

Cut'n'run Sally Palin would have had a massive irritable-bowel-syndrome flareup, all over herself. The bitch simply cannot stand adversity...why do you think she quit the AK governorship? Why do you think her book tour is bypassing major cities?

Fafaroo, I'd take odds that AO <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psycho_(1960_film)" rel="nofollow">still lives in his mother's house...</a>

And mega-kudos to Officer Munley, regardless of her political affiliation. Get her a case of beer!!

<blockquote>"The police officer who brought down a gunman after he went on a shooting rampage at the Fort Hood Army base"</blockquote>
Should have read "while he was on a shooting rampage" because she stopped it cold.
Sarah Palin would have turned her car the other way, and shot anyone who would have impeded her quitting the scene. Liberal or wingnut, I want this office there if I, or one of my loved ones, are in the same position!
