’)The police officer who brought down a gunman after he went on a shooting rampage at the Fort Hood Army base here was on the way to have her car repaired when she responded to a police radio report of gunfire at a center where soldiers are processed before being sent overseas, the authorities said Friday.
As she pulled up to the center, the officer, Kimberly Denise Munley, spotted the gunman, later identified as Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, brandishing a pistol and chasing a wounded soldier outside the building, said Chuck Medley, the director of emergency services at the base.
Sergeant Munley — a woman with a fierce love of hunting, surfing and other outdoor sports — bolted from her car, yanked her pistol out and shot at Major Hasan. He turned on her and began to fire. She ran toward him, continuing to fire, and both she and Major Hasan went down with several bullet wounds, Mr. Medley said.

Sergeant Munley, 34, is an expert in firearms and a member of the SWAT team for the civilian police department on the base, officials said.
Mr. Medley said she had received specific training in a tactic called active shooter protocol, which was intended for this kind of situation.
“She’s absolutely a hero,” he said. “She had the training; she knew what to do. And she had the courage to do it — by doing it she saved countless people’s lives.”

I just want to point out that this is important. Far too often people who claim that these incidents might never happen if everybody carried a gun forget that not everybody who carries a gun is trained in the responsibility such a weapon entails.

That’s a real nice sounding bit of wisdom there, have you actually ever fired a handgun before? Do you even know what active shooter protocol is?
For a person with reasonable hand eye coordination firearm competancy sufficient to place shots center of mass is not extremely difficult.
Training can help develope the mental toughness to face danger and kill an active threatbut countless civllians are up to the task. This is not to take away from her brave and successful efforts. What really makes her stand out though is she was the only person other than the muslim whackjob who had a functional firearm within reach. Had this not been a firearm free zone the number of Americans murdered by this traitor would have been much lower.

I think I prefer to apply Christian ethics here, even though I am not one of the elect myself: I hope she does. Not that I wish for Palin to find herself in the middle of something ghastly — we must not wish that even on really awful people. (Well, if it’s direct retribution for something they did? This is getting a bit too tricky for me.) No, but one can hope that in whatever she finds herself in, and we all face something awful in our lives, Palin does something big, and justifies, at least in some part, her so-far apparently quite worthless existence.

A firearm is a tool, nothing more. Anyone with commen sense and a moderate amount of hand eye coordination can use one fairly effectively. Top tier marksmanship is another matter, much like pro sports the bell curve in action. This was not a case of marksmanship but courage and average competency with a tool.

It takes little training to put a bullet in a paper target, it’s another story to shoot a human – a crazy, dangerous human, but still a human, in case you enjoy forgetting it – while putting yourself in danger and knowing that taking one second too many means your name will be on the “killed” list, and nevermind the people around – I don’t know how many were on the scene, but it doesn’t take that much for a situation to feel chaotic.
That’s a hell of a lot of pressure, and I don’t imagine someone like you, or most people actually, would be competent at anything while facing it.
