Adding to Canada Guy's list of similarities is the perception of a weak presidency. Carter's 1 1/2 years of dithering in the face of an active act of war created repercussions we are still dealing with. So far Obama is a tough guy with our allies and a pussy when dealing with our enemies. This obviously alianates allies and emboldens enemies. If only Rahm's take no prisoners approach to the administration's political opponents could translate to forign policy. You don't see the Chicago way used anywhere but domestically.

She was actually wrong on this one. Her comments may have been correct if Pervez Musharraf were in power... but he's long gone. She doesn't seem to recognize the shift that has taken place and that is currently taking place in Pakistan.

I think the new government really would like to root the extremists out.... but having 100,000+ U.S./NATO troops next door isn't exactly helping.

She may have ticked off a genuine ally in the region....or the closest thing to a real ally we could hope for there, by suggesting they know where OBL is...and they are protecting him. Asif Zardari has no reason to want to protect OBL... they killed his wife!

Clinton is a bonehead, IMO.

Recent history in Pakistan is similar to events in Iran during the rule of the Shah. Both leaderships were strongly backed by the US, and were involved in widespread repression or attacks on their own people. Both regimes followed policies that were deeply unpopular domestically. In Iran, this led the revolution of 1979 which created an Islamic Republic. Could something similar happen in Pakistan?

Too little too late. It's time to pull out of Afghanistan and spend the resources on intelligence and protecting America's borders. It's an occupation now and has been for over five years, and nothing good can come from it.

Indeed, Oliver. To the trolls "trying to deal with the laundry list of epic fuck-ups Bush dumped on the country" is tantamount to Bush Derangement Syndrome.

I wonder what color the sky is in their world.

Between the epic fail that was the Bush Admin and their tendency well into the second term to try and stretch the blame for any of their shortcomings all the way back the Clinton administration, the "derangement" argument is pretty weak... and please, the NRO? like they're even remotely credible.

If George W. Bush had not been such a colossal fail, we wouldn't have to clean up so much of his messes.
