Connecticut Dems: Lame

Attacking Linda McMahon for silly WWE storylines is a lame move for the Connecticut Democratic party. We already have an entire party of moral scolds, we don’t need that sort of behavior to be bipartisan.

Linda McMahon actually qualifies as a Republican that I wouldn’t mind hearing more from. At least I know she isn’t beholden to Fox.

  2. Randy Brown says:

Willa Westinghouse Linda Mac qualifies for absolutely nothing. She and her ‘roided-up, closet queen husband destroyed pro wrestling, and the lives of many who work for them (Chris Benoit, for example).

And why the fuck SHOULDN’T the McMahons be criticized for a simulated-rape angle? Or the “murder of Vinny Mac” angle? Or the many other outrages that emanate from the shitpile known as WWE? Please remember that their “product” is heavily marketed to children (even during the TV-MA “Attitude Era”).

I became a wrestling fan near the end of Bruno Sammartino’s second WWWF title reign, supported Bob Backlund, then changed allegiance to Ric Flair and the NWA/WCW when they expanded into Baltimore (and when the WWF forsook wrestling for showbiz glitz AND used predatory business practices to try to put the competition out of commission). In those days you didn’t need 18-minute expository interviews and outside-the-ring mayhem to put butts in seats. The young Flair could sell a match in a 90 second promo (and with only ONE “Whoo!”). Bruno and Backlund didn’t need any theatrics – they merely assured the fans that they would beat the latest villain, and 8,000-10,000 of them would pack the Civic Center on the last Saturday of every month.

Bruno and Backlund, Blassie, Albano (RIP) and the Grand Wizard, Jay Strongbow, Tony Garea, Ivan Putski, Animal Steele, Superstar Graham, and others in the W(W)WF. Flair and the original Four Horsemen, Dusty Rhodes, the Road Warriors and latter-day Terry Funk (godfathers of hardcore wrestling), and more in the 1980s NWA. Even the early ECW, before both WWF and (to a lesser extent) WCW co-opted its style and talent. As Ole Anderson used to say all the damn time, “The name on the marquee is WRESTLING.” Not the McMahons’ sports-entertainment shit.

If the CT Democrats want to pillory Linda for her company’s ill-advised rape angle, LET THEM. The bitch deserves it.

  3. Randy Brown says:

Matthew: even if Linda isn’t beholden to Fox NOW, if she somehow gets nominated she WILL be. Fellating Roger Ailes et.al. is mandatory for a GOP candidate.

  4. cj says:

Linda McMahon had her fair share of helping to portray the abuse of women on that show. I think should have to face the things she HELP promote on that show.

  5. Paul_D says:

Um, the state that still gives you Joe Lieberman (D, I, Asshole) Whad’ya expect?

  6. Adam Herman says:

I don’t think the storylines should be held against her, but the way she treats employees and manages the company should certainly be held against her.

  7. Jaim says:

The necrophilia thing is messed up, by any standard.

And Jimmie “Superfly” Snuka was the best wrestler evar.

  8. SaveFarris says:

To be fair, the CT Democratics are stuck trying to make a case for Chris Dodd. Grasping for straws is all they’ve got.

  9. jr says:

Linda should be attacked for not giving the wrestlers health insurance and 401k plans. Owen Hart died on her watch. Eddue Guerrero died on her watch. Chris Benoit killed his family on her watch. This is what happens when employees are treated like circus animals.

  10. Randy Brown says:

Farris, will you please remove Linda McMahon’s dildo from your ear and GET A CLUE?!

  11. Randy Brown says:

jr, I was going to add Brian Pillman, but his death was from a hidden heart ailment. However, Pillman was part of one of the WWF’s most controversial storylines: the gun incident with Steve Austin.

  12. Attacking McMahon over treatment of employees, as others point out here, is MORE than fair game. But over WWE storylines? No, that’s just dumb. Wrestling isn’t the goofy stuff it was back in the ’80s. It’s now goofy stuff with sexual innuendo and the like. B.S. faux outrage over OMG TEH CHILDREN is lame when cons do it, and lame when liberals do it.

  13. daniel rotter says:

“Grasping for straws is all they’ve got.”

I’m sure you’d characterize this line of attack as “grasping for straws” if the political parties of Dodd and McMahon were reversed, SaveFarris.

  14. Jesse Ewiak says:

    Actually Oliver,

They’ve gone back to being goofy stuff for children. It’s rated PG now and they’ve stopped using blood in any matches.

So Vinnie still fancies himself “the Walt Disney of wrestling”?
