Aung San Suu Kyi, awarded the Nobel Peace prize in 1991 for speaking out against the military junta in Myanmar (formerly Burma). To date the military junta remains in control. She should have turned down the award. The U.S. Navy recently (October 9, 2009) commissioned a ship named in honor of the late Medgar Evers for efforts to improve civil rights for all, since we have not achieved this goal, should his family request his name be removed and the ship commissioned with another name?

For a number of opponents and supporters of the President of the United States, the Norwegian committee has devalued their award and is “putting the cart before the horse.” But I ask this, has the Norwegian committee issued an award ahead of the curve previously? And for those who are trying to set their values the paradigm for the rest of us on when to award someone, do we laud the first step of a toddler or do we wait 17 years later for an Olympic Gold?

An administration that won the White House with an almost always on-message campaign and generally friendly coverage from old and new media is now frustrated by its inability to control the debate and get the coverage it wants….
