Stop railing against steroid use in sports. The athletes are just striving to be #1.

Stop railing against torture and empire-building. This is just our country doing everything it can to be #1.

I believe in striving to be one’s best, but there are ways to be one’s best without spending all your time panicking that somebody is better than you.

I’d rather have universal health care, a high standard of education, and sensible foreign policy…and would otherwise be fine being considered only the second-most powerful nation in the world, thank you very much.

Which supports my point that Obama, contrary to what those pushing the “Messiah” idea and it’s variants claim, is not unconditionally supported.

And who are “those”? How many of them are there? I’m sure examples can be found of a particularly even vehemently devout supporters (as I’ve said before), but such is the case for every President. Consider those who believe Bush was chosen to be Pres by God.

The “Messiah” label applies to Obama no more than it did to Bush and to keep talking as if it’s a wide-spread belief typical of the left is simply wrong. And merely shows how those opposed to Obama must set up straw men rather than provide substantive criticisms.

After all, that is the comment I was responding to.

As to why Pres Obama is “having such a hard time getting things through Congress?”, my guess is because there is some Democratic opposition to his agenda . Maybe TKB should be asking why the Democrats hate America?

Chill, O-dub. I don’t think this is a distinctly American trait, but as I’m an American living in America, I view it as an American problem.

I’m genuinely asking us to ask ourselves–if we are not #1, why is that “failure”? Is Great Britain a failed state? Is France?

I’m just saying that maybe it’s more important for us to “do” our best instead of fretting so much about “being” our best.

And who here has done that?

This is another variation on the “Messiah” and “The One” straw man claims that just don’t bear out under scrutiny. Are there fanatical Obama followers? Sure. Even Bush had his consistent 20%.

But there whole “liberals never think Obama ever does anything wrong” is just an argument made up by conservatives so they can dismiss his broad (but not absolute) support.

The seven other countries of the G8, who we consider our peer group, are Italy, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Russia, and the UK. For whoever is #2 in that group, is life so much drastically worse for the citizens of that nation that we’d consider falling into their slot to be a “failure”?
