Republicans Down On America

Oh sure, its a stupid Rasmussen poll designed to churn up a day or two of news coverage, but lets pretend as if this result had leaned Democratic.

Thirty-six percent (36%) think America will not be number one at the close of the century, and 34% are undecided. These numbers have been largely the same since March.

Republicans remain the most pessimistic. Nearly half (47%) of GOP voters say America will not be the world’s most powerful nation by the end of the century, a view shared by only 29% of Democrats and 34% of voters not affiliated with either major party.

Just the latest bit of evidence that Republicans are rooting for America to fail.

  1. Foreseeing that America might be heading a fall, rather than being perceived as the hope that America fails, might be perceived as a caution to change some policy, so it doesn’t happen.

But no one can stop Obama — he is never wrong.

    Heh.

  2. anotherbozo says:

This may be the silliest poll ever. Obama will have been out of power for 84 years, if my math is right, before the century ends, so any rational predictions have little to do with partisanship and in any case is asking a bit much of John Q. Even taking the psychic temperature is silly. Might as well ask “How are you feeling this morning?”

  3. Jaim says:

Um, the fall already happened Frank. It’s called the Bush Recession, not to mention squandering decades of international good will because we became a nation that tortures.

But keep telling yourself that everything was going great in American until January of this year. The damage by the GOP had already been done.

  4. Buzz Killington says:

This post is absurd. The question was what people think will happen, not what they want to happen. Tisk.

  5. TKB says:

Why does the GOP hate the U.S. — if they hate this country so much, maybe they should move to a country more to their liking. Oh I forgot, Nazi Germany was defeated in 1945 — one option gone for the GOP.

  6. Yeah, jaim, and of course, whatever Pres Obama does will work perfectly, and turn out just fine , because he is the anti – Bush.

Whatever Pres Bush did, just do the opposite, and you can’t go wrong, right, Jaim?

  7. Buzz Killington says:

There needs to be a law, a la Godwin, for when a person claims that another hates the US purely because of a difference of opinion regarding what’s best. That’s a sign that you’re going crazy in the political arena.

  8. I hereby nominate the name “Killington’s Law” for such a law: Whenever a person suggests that a person “hates” something or someone, because they disagree with person’s suggestion as to how that person or thing should be handled, that should bring the thread to a close

  9. Yes, TKB, because going along with everything that Pres Obama wants is the one, true sign that you are a true American.

Perhaps everyone else should be deported to the East?

We can call it the Democrat’s Final Solution.

I tend to think part of our problem is this NEED for America to be #1 in all things forever and ever amen. It stokes such things as hyper-capitalism and nationalist fervor as people become focused entirely on winning some kind of race–and a sprint, at that, instead of the marathon it actually is.

The seven other countries of the G8, who we consider our peer group, are Italy, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Russia, and the UK. For whoever is #2 in that group, is life so much drastically worse for the citizens of that nation that we’d consider falling into their slot to be a “failure”?

    • I tend to think part of our problem is this NEED for America to be #1 in all things forever and ever amen.
Do you honestly think this is a trait limited only to America? Be real. Everyone either thinks they’re #1 or wants to be #1. That’s a natural instinct. Ask the Chinese.

Frank DiSalle: But no one can stop Obama — he is never wrong.

    Are Republicans ever, Frank?

  12. Sean D. Martin says:

Frank DiSalle: Yes, TKB, because going along with everything that Pres Obama wants is the one, true sign that you are a true American.

And who here has done that?

This is another variation on the “Messiah” and “The One” straw man claims that just don’t bear out under scrutiny. Are there fanatical Obama followers? Sure. Even Bush had his consistent 20%.

But there whole “liberals never think Obama ever does anything wrong” is just an argument made up by conservatives so they can dismiss his broad (but not absolute) support.

  13. Sean D. Martin says:

Seriously. If Obama supporters were unquestioningly so, they why would he be having such a hard time getting things thru Congress?

  14. Janus Daniels says:

Sane criticism of Obama always comes from his left.

Chill, O-dub. I don’t think this is a distinctly American trait, but as I’m an American living in America, I view it as an American problem.

I’m genuinely asking us to ask ourselves–if we are not #1, why is that “failure”? Is Great Britain a failed state? Is France?

I’m just saying that maybe it’s more important for us to “do” our best instead of fretting so much about “being” our best.

  16. SpiderJ says:

    being the best, I mean.

  17. I’m genuinely asking us to ask ourselves–if we are not #1, why is that “failure”
Because to many of us, if you’re not striving for #1 you’re settling.

  18. S M : a better question might be , why does TKB think that the Republicans hate the U.S.?

After all, that is the comment I was responding to.

As to why Pres Obama is “having such a hard time getting things through Congress?”, my guess is because there is some Democratic opposition to his agenda . Maybe TKB should be asking why the Democrats hate America?

After all, he brought it up.

I have already said that for those for whom Pres Obama is a Messiah figure, it is they who see his opponents as racists for example, or haters of America .

  19. Sean D. Martin says:

Frank DiSalle: my guess is because there is some Democratic opposition to his agenda

Which supports my point that Obama, contrary to what those pushing the “Messiah” idea and it’s variants claim, is not unconditionally supported.

I have already said that for those for whom Pres Obama is a Messiah figure

And who are “those”? How many of them are there? I’m sure examples can be found of a particularly even vehemently devout supporters (as I’ve said before), but such is the case for every President. Consider those who believe Bush was chosen to be Pres by God.

The “Messiah” label applies to Obama no more than it did to Bush and to keep talking as if it’s a wide-spread belief typical of the left is simply wrong. And merely shows how those opposed to Obama must set up straw men rather than provide substantive criticisms.

  20. SpiderJ says:

Oliver, then stop railing against the insurance companies and multinational corporations. Everything they do is towards the effort of being #1.

Stop railing against steroid use in sports. The athletes are just striving to be #1.

Stop railing against torture and empire-building. This is just our country doing everything it can to be #1.

I believe in striving to be one’s best, but there are ways to be one’s best without spending all your time panicking that somebody is better than you.

I’d rather have universal health care, a high standard of education, and sensible foreign policy…and would otherwise be fine being considered only the second-most powerful nation in the world, thank you very much.

  21. Sean D. Martin says:

    Define “best”.

  22. Zython says:

Whatever Pres Bush did, just do the opposite, and you can’t go wrong, right, Jaim?

Yeah, pretty much. You could replace “Pres Bush” with “conservatives” and get the same effect.

Perhaps everyone else should be deported to the East?

How about Dubai? Talk about a win/win scenario.

S M : a better question might be , why does TKB think that the Republicans hate the U.S.?

Once again, Frank, turnabout is fair play. You guys did it for 8 years, so I’m doing it for the next 80. Deal.

  23. Zython: Once again, you demonstrate in your feverish attempt to be clever, that you did not undersatnd one word of my comment.

    Not a word.
