Is The Tax Issue Dead?
In the last few years Republicans have not had a lot of success with their traditional attacks on Democrats as tax and spenders. I don’t know if the change is because people post-Bush have a different view of the role of government, or if they’re just tired of the same old line from the GOP. But this op-ed from Creigh Deeds in the Washington Post is mighty interesting:
Let me be clear regarding taxes. I will sign a bill that is the product of bipartisan compromise that provides a comprehensive transportation solution. As a legislator, I have voted for a number of mechanisms to fund transportation, including a gas tax. And I’ll sign a bipartisan bill with a dedicated funding mechanism for transportation — even if it includes new taxes.
To build a bipartisan consensus to find that new revenue, and to ensure the best chance of passage, all options for funding will be on the table. We will need every legislator committed to finding a solution. In my 18 years in the legislature, I’ve learned that the best way to reach compromise is to be open to all ideas and get everyone involved.

The reason the “tax and spend” argument hasn’t worked for Republicans in last few elections is because they themselves were just as guilty of over-spending as Democratics were. And the voters punished them for it. As evidenced by the tea parties and the Summer of Discontent, spending is still very much an issue among the electorate.
The editorial is “interesting” insomuch as Deeds wants to copy the Obama playbook on healthcare: let someone else make all the decisions and then sign off (and take credit for) the final product. That’s not leadership.
I think their just wearing Obama out…the good thing is…he so laid back…it’s hard to run him ragged. He handle’s pressure a lil different..or let’s say in his own way. I am sure he is getting a laugh out of alot of this…and expected it.
is still very much an issue among the electorate
Yes, spending is an issue among the very conservative when Republicans aren’t in power. Hypocrites.
Before you start throwing out names, you’d do best to re-read my first 2 sentences.
Who can forget the Fox News-sponsored Tea Parties in the summer of 2005?
He handles pressure a lil different..or let’s say in his own way.
Yeah, he plays rope-a-dope.
As evidenced by the tea parties and the Summer of Discontent, spending is still very much an issue among
the electoratea fringe group of red-faced soreheads.fiqst
So, we have been promised a tax hike. Like the man said when challenged to say the word “beautiful” twice in a sentence : Beautiful, just fuckin’ beautiful!
