Jay Leno Begins Losing Time Slot Before Real Competition

I hope this is a sign, America.

‘Leno’: Averaged a 2.7/8 in the demo and 8. 5 million viewers, according to prelim national Nielsen data. Smallest audience in four broadcasts. Won the hour in adults 18-49 but lost to a repeat of ‘The Mentalist’ on CBS in viewers. This was the first night this week where Leno’s lead-in wasn’t a special but regular NBC programming.

I believe next week the season begins in earnest and CBS and ABC will have new programming on at 10 vs Leno.

  1. Oh I hated Jay Leno long before he started making obvious jokes about ACORN. There’s nothing wrong with making fun of ACORN, in fact I linked to Jon Stewart doing just that. It’s the laziness of Leno’s comedy that offends me.

It doesn’t take viewers long to figure out they’ve seen it already.

Judging from the way my more conservative friends are posting that Jon Stewart segment to their Facebook profiles, they seem to have abandoned en masse their previous convictions that Stewart isn’t funny, is a “failed comedian”, etc.

  4. SaveFarris says:

It almost doesn’t matter what Leno’s ratings are: the show is still making money hand over fist because it’s so cheap to produce.

Welcome to the future: it sucks.

I love how the wingnuts assume liberals are as obsessed with ACORN as they are, and that failure to post about them daily indicates deliberate avoidance of the topic.

Of course when liberal blogs do overreport a story/incident concerning say, the lunacy of Palin or Beck, it’s evidence to wingnuttia that liberals are afraid.

I guess this line of reasoning makes sense if you peruse Con blogs – they are both obsessed with and fearful of Obama’s Muslim Socialist Agenda To Destroy America.

It says something about conservatives that the less truth there is to a conspiracy the more they fear it.

Jay Leno’s the only program that makes “Momma’s Boys” look like a good idea in comparison

    SF,

Slate had an article the other day making the same point re the evening network newscasts. They’re still money makers despite declining ratings.

  8. Enlightened Liberal says:

By the way, how exactly did ACORN become known as a proxy for the Obama administration? Especially since their community service functions have been funded for years, including under Republican congresses. Thinking this is ACORN=EVIL so therefore must be a secret arm of the Obama administration.

I hope one of those networks would have an hour’s worth of Jeremy Scahill making Chuck Todd look bad.

    I’d watch that.

  10. Impaler says:

Oliver, I agree, the only winner here is Leno, there was no way they would let Fox snag him. Everyone else loses with this one, especially Conan.

“Ow, My Nuts!” with your host, Arsenioooooo Haaaaaallllll!

  12. soullite says:

I think you’re reading this wrong. In the eyes of most advertisers, winning 18-49 means you win. Total viewers is nice, but if that could save you Bonanza would probably still be on the air.

I do hope he fails, as Jay Leno really does use some lame-ass stale jokes.

  13. Duros62 says:

And let’s not even talk about Kevin Eubanks.

  14. Wilfredo says:

Yeah, I’m gonna have to agree with Farris on this, but he doesn’t have to word it with such relish!

Impaler – It’s not just O’Brien who loses with Leno at 10, we all do.

  15. Bitter Scribe says:

As far as I could tell, this is just the Tonight Show moved up 90 minutes. What’s the big deal?
