At Least He Sat At The Desk

I’m no Jimmy Carter fan, but you gotta laugh at John Mccain calling him the worst president of the 20th century. Especially after our last president and a century that had Herbert Hoover.

But John McCain? Yeah, Carter actually won at least one of the elections for president he ran in.

By that logic, you aren’t allowed to criticize Bush either.

  2. jr says:

“my opposition to MLK’s birthday being a national holiday wasn’t racist”-John McCain

  3. Impaler says:

Yes Carter was the worst president in the 20th century, Yes, he sat at the desk. The 1980 election results are pretty clear. I will further agree that McCain = failure.

  4. Viceroy Matt says:

What IS it with conservatives and Carter?

  5. Jay says:

Breaking……Al Gore, Chris Dodd and John Kerry are hereby required to refrain from offering any opinions on former Presidents. So sayeth The Willis Rules.

By that logic, you aren’t allowed to criticize Bush either.

Okay, Mr pedantic, Bush is the worse President of the 21st Century. Happy now? So far this century, the Democrats have had better leadership, 2 to 1.

    Good point.

I honestly think John McCain was indirectly trying to give a bipartisan boost to Barack Obama, thinking he might be kinda down right now and worrying he might end up saddled with that tag.

  8. SaveFarris says:

Sorry Duros: You’re not allowed to make that judgement unless you’ve worked in the Oval.

    So sayeth the Willis.

  9. No, my rule only applies to Republican d-bags.

  10. mike in dc says:

Hmm…Taft(initiated the personal income tax), Wilson(made the income tax progressive, segregated federal offices), Harding(major corruption scandals), Hoover(economic incompetence), Nixon(only president ever forced to resign in American history) and GHWB(economic incompetence) seem like they could give Jimmah’ a run for his money, at least from a conservative perspective.

  11. anotherbozo says:

I think the greatest failure of the Carter presidency was preparing the way in the public’s mind for one of the truly worst presidencies: Reagan’s.

  12. Dennis says:

42 US states lose jobs in August, up from July

I pray I’m wrong about Obama and Jimmy Carter, but I think it will go right down to the wire.

  13. Parthenon says:

Warren Harding was the worst, unsurprising considering he didn’t really want the job. Not a long enough look at Bush just yet, though I’m not ruling him out.

  14. Impaler says:

mike in dc, Bush had a second term, Carter was nearly thrown out of office, John Anderson (I) gathered alot of Democrats who where pissed.

  15. James E Powell says:

Most of the people who criticize Carter are completely ignorant of those times.

What has any subsequent president done that ranks with the Camp David Accords?

    God, get over it already.

  17. Jay says:

Still if the debate is going to be about the worst President since the dawn of the 20th century, the discussion begins and ends really with Woodrow Wilson. Carter was just incompetent. Wilson was just horrible.

All the talk about George W. Bush’s supposed racism is hilarious when one looks at the virulent racism of Woodrow Wilson. He absolutely loved ‘Birth of A Nation.’ Wilson re-segregated the civil service. Wilson had promised to create a national race commission, something that got the support of WEB Debois and of course, Wilson broke his promise (it was carried out in fact, by Harding).

Wilson’s bigotry against Asians contributed to foreign policy blunders especially with regard to Japan who people like Teddy Roosevelt and William Taft worked with to improve relations. Wilson flushed that down the toilet when he refused to vote on a League of Nations amendment supported by Japan that would support founding principles of racial equality. Because Wilson refused to vote, he claimed the amendment did not pass because it was not a unanimous decision.

Then there was his 1916 re-election campaign which was based on the slogan, “He kept us out of war.” Of course, in 1917 he asked Congress to declare war on the Central Powers. If there was ANY war in the 20th century we had not business fighting, it was World War I. Wilson wanted it. And as such, it set of a course of events that allowed a maniac like Adolph Hitler to rise to power. Yes, I said it. Woodrow Wilson’s actions with regard to World War I and also the awful Versailles Treaty led to the rise of Hitler.

Wilson pushed for and gained passage of The Sedition Act. It basically made criticism of the government during a time of war illegal.

Woodrow Wilson was a disgrace yet Democrats hold up this turd as one of the great all time Presidents. What a joke.

  18. cj says:

Wait a minute….are you saying that the US government was responsible for creating Adolph Hitler’s rise to power? WOW that is truly un-American.

Jay, why do you hate America?

  19. Duros62 says:

He absolutely loved ‘Birth of A Nation.’

Didn’t it premiere at the White House? I thought I read that somewhere.

  20. Burn says:

Birth of a Nation didn’t premiere at the WH, but it was given a special screening. After the film was over, Wilson commented that the movie disturbed him…because of the accuracy and truth of the story.

  21. I'm a Hick says:

But Southern Quaker and I have a place for Woodrow Wilson in our hearts, right?

  22. Sam Simple says:

This pathetic, senile old war criminal has no judgment left at all. His selection of Sarah Palin as a running mate proved that beyond a shadow of a doubt.

  23. I’ve said it before , and I will say it again: By 2060, Pres G H W Bush will be seen as the man who brought peace to the Middle East, by removing Saddam Hussein.

    Iran is next.

and Simple Same , calling John McCain a war criminal spotlights your own ignorance.

  24. Amused Observer says:

“Woodrow Wilson was a disgrace yet Democrats hold up this turd as one of the great all time Presidents.”

They think the Coward of Chappaquiddick was a great guy too. Wilson may have been the worst president of the century but Carter has been the worst of my lifetime. Clinton was a criminal but he looks good compared to Carter. Obama is on course to do more harm than Carter did so all we do is wait and see.

  25. Pres Obama: St Elizabeth’s in 2011!

  26. buma says:

Mc Ghost has a point. The NYT story he links to does mention that Gore would only have won Florida if all the merely-dimpled ballots were tossed out. From the article:

Using the most restrictive standard — the fully punched ballot card — 5,252 new votes would have been added to the Florida total, producing a net gain of 652 votes for Mr. Gore, and a 115-vote victory margin.

At least bush won in 2004, right?

  27. buma says:

I’ve said it before , and I will say it again: By 2060, Pres G H W Bush will be seen as the man who brought peace to the Middle East, by removing Saddam Hussein.

A senior moment I guess, for our wingnut friend.

  28. Jaim says:

Funny, I don’t remember the WTC collapsing during Carter’s administration.

  29. Impaler says:

Jaim, No, but it was nice of Clinton to give them the dry run, and plenty of training grounds to practice for the big one. Not to mention gutting our intelligence gathering capability, and not accepting the gift of Osama bin Laden from the Sudan. Let us not forget his reasons for not taking Bin Laden, “well he hasn’t broken any US Laws”. Or Jamie Gorelick, Able Danger is not allowed to share information with the FBI, because we don’t know if it’s been legally obtained. Oh and this is my favorite, Sandy (Burglar) Berger, covering up Clinton’s complicity with stealing original secret documents, for his former boss so “certain” documents cannot be found by the 9/11 commission, all of this while getting BJ’s from a fat chick, then lying about it in court.

But, I still think Carter was worse, now that’s saying something.

  30. Jaim says:

9/11/2001 happened under Bush’s watch no matter how much you scream and wet yourself to the contrary.

Back to the topic at hand, Carter was definitely a weak president. But Bush II was a complete disaster who failed to prevent the largest terrorist attack on American soil, squandered a budget surplus, led us into the worst financial crisis since The Great Depression, and started and failed to finish two different wars.

History will not be kind to him. Hell, there’s a reason he isn’t making public appearances. He’s hated by his own people. He’s a laughingstock.

Carter has at least salvaged part of his reputation with work after the presidency. Bush won’t even have that option.

And stammer all you want about Clinton, but he’s already gone down as a popular, successful US president. He’d be considered one of the greatest if he hadn’t been fucking Lewinsky in what was (I’ll admit) an incredibly stupid thing to do.

But it’s funny how Republicans actually became less popular because of the impeachment. All of the adulterous leadership of the GOP basically outed themselves before falling off the map.

  31. Impaler says:

9/11/2001 happened under Bush’s watch no matter how much you scream and wet yourself to the contrary.

Bottom line, how long have you lived in Korea, are you hanging out with the hate America crowd there? Throw a few Molotov’s at the RoKs, do you call the American soldiers occupiers, where you even born in the 70’s, you are missing the common sense gene.

Remind me not to lone you a car, you are the type of friend who borrows a car with a full tank, gives it back, and blames me for not having enough gas to get to the gas station the next day, (because I’m driving). Yep, you’re a winner!

  32. Jaim says:

If there’s a “hate America crowd” here I’m unaware of it. Although people were upset about US beef imports being tainted with mad cow disease.

Americans are generally well liked. Most of the civilized world hated Bush and his idiotic policies, but American citizens not so much.

So um, what the hell are you talking about?

“Remind me not to lone you a car”

Why would I ask you for a car you fucking idiot?

  33. Amused Observer says:

    Uh Jaim,
The bit about the car is an illustration of your unsavory tendencies not to be confused with an actual scenario where you drive his real car. What he is trying to point out is that you are a whining petulent immature spoiled brat who is a selfish ungrateful rationalizer unable to take responsibility for your own shortcomings, perfectly willing to abuse any relationship and never step up to the plate. Fucking idiot! LOL

  34. He’s hated by his own people. He’s a laughingstock.

    http://tinyurl.com/df2cfb

Have you never heard the saying, “It is better to be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt”?

Perhaps Pres Bush is not making a lot of public appearances because he is a classy Republicsn former President , not an a**hole former Democratic President

  35. calling all toasters says:

Frank sez: nothing says “class” like being an ignorant frat boy bully.

  36. Lettuce says:

I’ll be the last guy, but not the only guy, to insist that Jimmy Carter did wonders GIVEN THE ECONOMY OF THE WORLD when he was President.

If you’ve got another area where he did poorly, I’d be happy to hear it.

  37. Amused Observer says:

    Lettuce,

American citizens were captured and imprisoned on American soil and the weakest American president ever let them dangle in the wind for entirely too long. His timidness emboldened muslim terrorists and led them to believe we were a paper tiger, as we generally are under liberal leadership.

Just a wee bit inflammatory eh Ollie? The sack of shit is named Barry, you may know him under his street cred name of Barack.

  38. Parthenon says:

The Carter Administration’s major blunder with regard to the Islamic World and terrorism was the deliberate incitement of the Soviet incursion into Afghanistan, admitted by both Zbignew Brezinski and Robert Gates. In the context of the cold war, this action made sense and was downright neoconservative in character, in my opinion. Compared to the Afghanistan issue, though, the Iranian hostage crisis – though it gets a lot more attention in the states – was a blip.

Bush II’s record will speak for itself, the wails of his hardest partisans notwithstanding.

  39. Jaim says:

    Put the bottle down Frank.

  40. Trying it again, eh, Jaim? It was stupid, and lacking in class and dignity the first time. Now, it is tedious, stupid, and lacking in class and dignity.

At least it answers the question , “What kind of anencephalic delinquent would listen to former Pres Carter?
He is anti-Semitic, and knew very little about the world when he was President, and he knows less about it now.

  41. Wilbur says:

Still if the debate is going to be about the worst President since the dawn of the 20th century, the discussion begins and ends really with Woodrow Wilson

    Jeeeee bus!

All the talk about George W. Bush’s supposed racism is hilarious when one looks at the virulent racism of Woodrow Wilson.

Not to mention that fucking asshole Thomas Jefferson. He actually owned black people. And fucked them!

If there was ANY war in the 20th century we had not business fighting, it was World War I. Wilson wanted it.

Please, Jay. If today’s republicans had been around back then they would have been screaming for war after the Lusitania. Of course the republicans back then were a lot more sensible than today’s breed.

And as such, it set of a course of events that allowed a maniac like Adolph Hitler to rise to power.

    I can only repeat. Jeeeeeeeeee-bus!

Woodrow Wilson was a disgrace yet Democrats hold up this turd as one of the great all time Presidents…

As do many Republicans. The ones with brains, that is.

There really oughta be a law against wingnuts reading history books. The results are seldom pretty.

Admit it, Jay, what really steams you about Wilson is the income tax.

  42. Wilbur says:

Pres Obama: St Elizabeth’s in 2011!

I doubt it. If you’re lucky Michelle might visit you there on a charity tour.

  43. Only celebs go to St Elizabeth’s

  44. Amused Observer says:

“And stammer all you want about Clinton, but he’s already gone down as a popular, successful US president”

Not bad for a lying perjeror who was impeached and disbarred for his behavior while president.

  45. Wilbur says:

…who was impeached [acquitted] and disbarred for his behavior while president.

But not for anything he did in his official capacity as president. If that were the standard for disbarring former presidents (which it should be) W would be disbarred from all bars for the rest of his life.

  46. Wilbur says:

Hey Frank, don’t be down on yourself. You’re a celebrity to us.

  47. Quaker in a Basement says:

Impy, you really need to start reading something besides right wing blogs. Here’s why:
not accepting the gift of Osama bin Laden from the Sudan Wrong.
Jamie Gorelick, Able Danger is not allowed to share information with the FBI Wrong.
Sandy (Burglar) Berger, covering up Clinton’s complicity with stealing original secret documents, Wrong.
so “certain” documents cannot be found by the 9/11 commission, Wrong.
then lying about it in court And wrong.

  48. Dennis says:

    Jimmy Carter’s Race Problem

When former president Jimmy Carter accuses the opponents of Barrack Obama’s policy of nationalizing broad aspects of our economy and spending us into bankruptcy of being “racists,” perhaps he should look in the mirror. In his 1982 book, Keeping Faith, Carter disingenuously said he “was not directly involved in the early struggles to end racial discrimination.” No kidding — in fact, he directly and unambiguously supported segregation. When Carter returned to Plains, Georgia, to become a peanut farmer after serving in the Navy, he became a member of the Sumter County School Board, which did not implement the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision handed down by the Supreme Court. Instead, the board continued to segregate school children on the streets of Carter’s hometown.…..

    Read the whole thing.

  49. Quaker in a Basement says:

Sweet screaming monkeys, Dennis! An article on NRO slamming Carter’s bona fides on race from Hans Spakovsky??

    Beyond freakin’ parody.

  50. Dennis says:

Is that somehow worse than Jimmy Carter scolding us on race or something, Quaker?

  51. Parthenon says:

    He is anti-Semitic,

    Care to prove that?

  52. Quaker in a Basement says:

Is that somehow worse than Jimmy Carter scolding us on race or something, Quaker?

    Yes.

  53. abanterer says:

Carter helped broker the treaty between Egypt and Israel. If he was anti-Semitic, you’d think he wouldn’t have bothered.

  54. Amused Observer says:

Antisemetic? Jimmy Carter? LOL look who funds his center for international meddling. While there may be reason to debate whether or not Jimmy was the worst US president he has the title for worst FORMER president all sewed up.

    Uh Wilber,
He lost his license to practice law (think of all the slimey lawyers who manage to hang on theirs) specifically for committing perjury. Your rationalization about official capacity is kind of cute. Should a president be above the law simply because of the job he holds, like a king? Still, he looks good compared to Carter.

  55. Quaker in a Basement says:

    specifically for committing perjury.

    Nope. Contempt of court.

  56. Quaker in a Basement says:

AO, you seem to be confusing “antisemetic” with “does not offer kneejerk support for every decision of the Israeli government”.

There is a difference, you know.

  57. Parthenon says:

AO, you seem to be confusing “antisemetic” with “does not offer kneejerk support for every decision of the Israeli government”.

That’s why I asked. Conservatives conflate lack of support for the policies of the Likud party and anti-semitism.

    Which is, of course, nonsense.

  58. Wilbur says:

There is a difference, you know.

No, I’m afraid he doesn’t, poor dear.

  59. Wilbur says:

Should a president be above the law simply because of the job he hold

Absolutely not, which is why the entire Bush II administration, from W and Cheney on down, should be prosecuted for war crimes, and obstruction of justice immediately.

  60. PD100 says:

Should a president be above the law simply because of the job he hold
    Pssst. Iran Contra- Dat terrorism.

  61. Jaim says:

Dennis linking to NRO. There’s an air-tight argument for something.

  62. Impaler says:

Quaker, Not wrong on any count. Some aspects provable in a criminal court of law, probably not, but that does not change the fact that those events happened, and Jamie Gorelick then got here “retirement” with huge bonuses from Fannie Mae, She truly is the master of disaster.

  63. Impaler says:

    specifically for committing perjury.

    Nope. Contempt of court.

Quaker, it was Contempt of Court, for committing perjury (not testifing truthfully)in the Paula Jones Case, after he was warned to be a good boy and stop lying. Contempt of Court is an easier deal to prove, so bam, Court punishes him and thats it.

  64. Dennis says:

That’s why I asked. Conservatives conflate lack of support for the policies of the Likud party and anti-semitism.

    Which is, of course, nonsense.

Gee, sorta like liberals conflate lack of support for the current policies of the Democratic party and racism, Parthy.

    Which is, of course, nonsense.

  65. Amused Observer says:

    No Quaker,
I’m not confusing anti semitism with non kneejerk support of each movewment of the Israeli government. I’m talking about Carter’s lack of evenhanded treatment of Palestinian terrorism vs. Israel’s right to self defense after enduring rocket attacks and terrorist infiltration. Remember what they said about Nixon? Follow the money. Who writes the big checks for Carter’s operation?

And Quaker, What was the underlying foundation which contempt of court rested upon? Clinton was a perjuror, Clinton was impeached, Clinton was disbarred. A man with honor would have resigned, Clinton’s never been accused of being an honorable man. Still our second black president makes our first black president look pretty good in comparison.

  66. Quaker in a Basement says:

    Clinton was a perjuror,

That’s your judgment, not the court’s.

  67. Quaker in a Basement says:

that does not change the fact that those events happened

No, they didn’t. Every last one is a choice example of right-wing agitprop. And every last one is dead wrong.

  68. Quaker in a Basement says:

I’m talking about Carter’s lack of evenhanded treatment of Palestinian terrorism vs. Israel’s right to self defense after enduring rocket attacks and terrorist infiltration.

Palestinian terrorism? I think you’re confusing Paletsinian terrorists with Palestinian civilians and faulting Mr. Carter for not adopting your bias.

  69. Amused Observer says:

    LOL Quaker,
Clinton didn’t commit perjury? Dream on. Your opinion about Carter and Palestinians is almost as far out as your Clinton apologista riff. I realize Quakers traditionally are pacifists and have little historical experience with war and the defense of a nation. But even so I would think you might understand the big picture. I mentioned Palestinian terrorists who launch rockets and infiltrate the nation of Israel to blow themselves up etc. and you think I confuse them with the tamer flavor of Palestinian, ironically a term that meant for thousands of years a jew from their native homeland Palestine. Carter is a senile asshole who accepts big money from the Saudis and rants against the Israelis. the nation was a better cleaner place after the Coward of Chappquidick expired recently, we can look forward to a similar uplifting when the Old Peanut Farmer shuffles off this mortal coil and starts annoying the dwellers of the celestial beyond.

  70. Quaker in a Basement says:

    Clinton didn’t commit perjury?

    What court says he did?

  71. Quaker in a Basement says:

If you have nothing other than name-calling to offer, I certainly won’t tax you with a rebuttal.
