An evangelical Christian, Prejean said she thought it was great that Americans could choose between “same-sex marriage or opposite marriage,” but that marriage should be between a man and a woman.

Sums up a major bloc of the modern Republican party in so many ways.

“God told me to get breast implants like in Matthew 1:20-21″-Carrie Prejean

  3. Dennis says:

And curiously enough, it sums up the Democratic President’s, the Democratic Vice-President’s and Democratic Secretary of State’s, too. In so many ways.

    Dunce’s too, hmm?

  4. Duros62 says:

    “Squirrel!”

  5. Sean D. Martin says:

So she thinks it’s “great” that people are able to choose, and then states what her own choice is. I honestly have never understood what anyone, especially those on the left, find at all objectionable about her statement.

  6. Not a Lizard from Alpha Centauri, Really says:

I honestly have never understood what anyone, especially those on the left, find at all objectionable about her statement.

I honestly have never understood why anyone cares about her statement. She was a contestant in a minor-league beauty pagent. How on earth did she become national news?

  7. Duros62 says:

Me neither, Sean. I find Perez Hilton more objectinable, just in general. I mean, I get that perhaps you could object to her statement that marriage “should be between a man and a woman.” But otherwise…meh.

  8. Sean D. Martin says:

Duros62: I mean, I get that perhaps you could object to her statement that marriage “should be between a man and a woman.”

Perhaps, if taken on it’s own. But when immediately proceeded with saying it’s great folks can choose for themselves? Nothing to see here. Move along.

  9. cj says:

Sean D. Martin-”So she thinks it’s “great” that people are able to choose, and then states what her own choice is. I honestly have never understood what anyone, especially those on the left, find at all objectionable about her statement.”

Maybe it’s the fact that people CAN’T choice because gay people by Federal law are not allowed to get marry. They can’t do joint taxes, they can’t receive benefits if one spouse dies like in SS or worker benefits, and they are not allowed to make medical decisions in times of crisis for same sex spouse. Oh and yea no marriage leases that the Federal government will recognize.

That is what so many people on the left (like me) are offended by her statement that “it was great that Americans could choose between “same-sex marriage or opposite marriage,”

  10. Duros62 says:

Maybe it’s the fact that people CAN’T choice because gay people by Federal law are not allowed to get marry.

    Oh well, yeah, there’s that.

  11. Indeed says:

I honestly have never understood what anyone, especially those on the left, find at all objectionable about her statement.

She’s another poster girl against non-opposite marriage, silly. Or don’t you find that objectionable? She’s a featured speaker at the Jesus Wingnut ‘09 Fest, for fuck’s sake. Or don’t you find them objectionable?

  12. Indeed says:

Oh, plus she’s deeply, deeply stupid. I’m talking George Bush, Jr. stupid. Sarah Palin stupid. You know, a modern Republican. Also.

  13. Duros62 says:

    Well, yeah, there’s that too.

    Also.

  14. Indeed says:

It would be as though Rush Limbaugh said something like,

I deplore racism. I am not racist, and I don’t think anyone else should be…

That statement on its face is quite fine. What does the rest of the story tell us? (e.g., “Take that bone out of your nose and call me back!” amongst other awfulness).

  15. Impaler says:

Barack Obama Opposes same-sex marriage, but also opposes a constitutional ban. – CNN

But I guess if your a Democrat you are a genius if you think this way, as long as your not a Republican. Good argument!

  16. Dennis says:

Shhh, Impaler. Like Joan Walsh doesn’t want to answer Oliver’s embarrassing question, neither do these guys want to address that one.

We should start a tweet petition.

    Yoi.

  17. Sean D. Martin says:

Indeed: Oh, plus she’s deeply, deeply stupid.

OK, Indeed. You’ve convinced me with the strength of your well-reasoned arguments.

  18. cj says:

Impaler-”But I guess if your a Democrat you are a genius if you think this way, as long as your not a Republican. Good argument!”

And I guess he isn’t getting any push back from the left….oh what he is.

But you know President Obama is taking some steps to correct things….

President Barack Obama Signs Memo Opening Benefits to Same-Sex Couples http://www.militaryinfo.com/news_story.cfm?textnewsid=3340

“Obama also called on Congress to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act. “I believe it’s discriminatory, I think it interferes with states’ rights, and we will work with Congress to overturn it,” he said.”

Of course I would love if he would just sign into law allowing gay marriage to be seen as marriage period under Federal law.

There is still more work to be done.

  19. Indeed says:

OK, Indeed. You’ve convinced me with the strength of your well-reasoned arguments.

Perhaps you missed my other points:

Then there’s the title of this blog post, in case you missed it, here’s the link:

    http://www.oliverwillis.com/2009/09/18/and-a-dunce-shall-lead-them/

    Also.

  20. Indeed says:

But I guess if your a Democrat you are a genius if you think this way, as long as your not a Republican. Good argument!

I missed the part where someone made that argument. Could you point it out to me? Is President Obama appearing at the America Is a Christian Nation and All Other Religions Can Suck Napalm Con-Fab ‘09? And who knew Obama and Jesus Barbie (with real fake boobs!) had identical positions on Opposite Marriage? I bet they stayed up all night, debating the merits of opposite marriage non-anti-opposite marriage and stuff during intense “Bull Sessions” while studying together at Harvard Law School. Also.

  21. Sean D. Martin says:

Indeed: Perhaps you missed my other points

    I saw them.
    “She’s another poster girl”
    “for fuck’s sake. ”
    “Rush Limbaugh”!
    “..A Dunce…”

All as equally reasoned and as lacking in “but, but, she is! It’s so obvious!” as the post I’d said convinced me you were right.

  22. Quaker in a Basement says:

    Everybody sing!

He’s still working on me to make me what I ought to be.

  23. Indeed says:

All as equally reasoned and as lacking in “but, but, she is! It’s so obvious!” as the post I’d said convinced me you were right.

Sheesh, I can only lead you so far. If you want to believe that Jesus Barbie is OK with Non-Opposite Marriage, while she speaks at the Freakfest, that’s totally your prerogative. And you couldn’t grasp the Rush Limbaugh analogy? Really? Really?

If you think the Blue Team shouldn’t mock the Red Team’s proudly adopting a willfully ignorant know-nothing worldview with ignorant know-nothing spokes dumbasses, well, that’s also your prerogative. I think they’re ripe for the mocking and ought to be mocked early and often.

Oh, and sorry for some of the salty language, I didn’t realize it would cause you to clutch your pearls so tightly. My sincere apologies.

  24. Dennis says:

    Indeed. You. Are. A. Psycho.

And it appears unanimous; left, right, center, and all points in between.

  25. Indeed says:

    Indeed. You. Are. A. Psycho.

Now that’s a well reasoned argument.

  26. Sean D. Martin says:

Indeed: If you want to believe that Jesus Barbie is OK with Non-Opposite Marriage

Please point out to me where I said I believe that.

Please point out to me where Prejean said she wsa against it?

    In her original statement?

We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage. And you know what, I think in my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there, but that’s how I was raised.

Nope. A bit incorrect in her first sentence since right now people can’t choose gay marriage, but she didn’t make a statement against it.

And since then she’s been attacked for honestly answering a “gotcha” question. Her answer didn’t say gay marriage was wrong. If anything she said (yes, incorrectly) that it is already allowed and she didn’t speak against that.

And yet, starting with Perez Hilton (an onerous worm about whom the less said the better) almost from the moment she completed her answer, she’s been attacked for her beliefs when she hadn’t attacked anyone else for theirs.

And your “points” against her boil down to “We all know she’s a dunce”, “She’s just stupid” because she attended “Wingnut Fest/Freakfest”. Without once listing something she’s actually said or done do demonstrate her “stupidity”.

Sorry, you haven’t convinced me she’s a homophobic idiot with designs on destroying gays by saying “she’s stupid”.

  27. cj says:

You know I avoided watching Carrie Prejean and what she was saying at whatever fest she’s at, but I watched it anyways.

Did she really say she was disgusted at people’s intolerance towards other people’s rights? I mean did I really her their words coming out of her mouth? *in complete shock* NOT REALLY.

  28. Sean D. Martin says:

Indeed: And you couldn’t grasp the Rush Limbaugh analogy? Really? Really?

Limbaugh has a well documented history of making extremely racists comments so him claiming he’s not a racist is obviously hypocritical.

Show me where Prejean has anything ike a Limbaugh history of actually saying homophobic things or where, after doing so, she denied she’s opposed to gays and then your “analogy” might actually be one.

    As it is, it’s meaningless.

  29. Sean D. Martin says:

Indeed: If you think the Blue Team shouldn’t mock the Red Team’s proudly adopting a willfully ignorant know-nothing worldview with ignorant know-nothing spokes dumbasses, well, that’s also your prerogative.

Nope, all for it. But folks like Palin and “Joe the Plummer” have been often quoted as saying really stupid and offensive things. From the very first comment in this thread Prejean is being derided as if she’s an idiot and vehement gay basher when (as you quoted yourself in that very first comment in this thread) “Prejean said she thought it was great that Americans could choose between “same-sex marriage or opposite marriage,” “.

That part seems to get lost in the “we got to get her because of what she believes” over the latter part where she states her beliefs without having attacked anyone else’s.

  30. canadian bacon says:

“God told me to get breast implants like in Matthew 1:20-21″-Carrie Prejean

This one really cracked me up, jr.

  31. cj says:

Sean D. Martin-”Without once listing something she’s actually said or done do demonstrate her “stupidity”.”

    What about this…

“I never thought that I would be up on a stage representing, you know, the state of California.”

Umm when she was on the Miss USA stage wasn’t she representing California?

“I am disgusted with the way some people can be so intolerant. ”

I got a big laugh out of that one.

  32. Indeed says:

    Hmm…

Miss California USA Carrie Prejean announced Thursday she will star in an anti-gay marriage ad sponsored by the controversial National Organization for Marriage.

“I was attacked for giving my own opinion on stage at a Miss USA contest, and I’m going to do whatever it takes, Matt, to protect marriage,” Prejean, 21, told NBC “Today” show host Matt Lauer.

“The National Organization for Marriage basically just respects, um, you know, marriages and people who support it,” she said. “That’s what I’m here to do today, protect traditional marriage.”

So she thinks is great that people can choose (because that’s what it is, a choice–at least according to the Book of Wingnut), she just doesn’t want them to, and will fight for laws which prevent them from choosing to. I just assumed this was common knowledge (a la Rush Limbaugh’s “Take that bone out of your nose” and so much more).

From tonight’s show, Rachel Maddow says it best:

Jesus Barbie: I am disgusted at the way “some people” can be so intolerant. It disgusts me.

Rachel Maddow: Carrie Prejean, champion of tolerance! For the brave stance against other peoples’ civil rights.

    Nope, all for it.

OK, then. Let the mocking begin!

  33. Impaler says:

CJ, the only thing funny about what you write, is California already passed Prop 8, California, and no Obama is going to talk, but do nothing.

Oh and by the way, most people do not have a problem with civil unions, just not marriage for gays. Most believe that to be an affront to G_D. You can Call Believers in G_D crazy and make all the jokes you want, but Believers are not going away, and Obama knows it.

  34. Sean D. Martin says:

    cj:What about this…

“I never thought that I would be up on a stage representing, you know, the state of California.”

Umm when she was on the Miss USA stage wasn’t she representing California?

Huh? Where in that does she say she isn’t representing California?

“I never thought this thing would come to pass, and yet here it has.”

A common enough phrasing people use to express their pleasure/amazement/etc that something that at one time may not have seemed likely has in fact happened.

“I am disgusted with the way some people can be so intolerant. ”

I got a big laugh out of that one.

And where in THAT snippet does she demonstrate any intolerance herself?

  35. Sean D. Martin says:

Indeed: “Miss California USA Carrie Prejean announced Thursday she will star in an anti-gay marriage ad sponsored by the controversial National Organization for Marriage.”

    Finally.

  36. I was browsing through the thread and spotted the phrase “non – opposite” marriage. (!)

WTF ! Another euphemism from the well? Do you guys ever run out of ways to disguise unpopular ideas?

I am not opposed to gay marriage, but I sure would like it be the law of the land that I could marry a transsexual as a woman, instead of having a same – sex marriage.

Do I expect that to happen any time soon?

    No.

Should I get a group together and ram it through as an Executive Order, or do an end run and let the Supreme Court decide?

No, believe it or not, Pres Bush had the right idea: Go through the Constitutional Amendment process, and have 50 state discussions.

  37. Indeed says:

WTF ! Another euphemism from the well? Do you guys ever run out of ways to disguise unpopular ideas?

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/04/20/carrie-prejean-miss-calif_n_188897.html

    Any more questions?

  38. Right. I get my marching orders from beauty contest contestants.

  39. Indeed says:

Right. I get my marching orders from beauty contest contestants.

    Holy fuck are you dim.

  40. Quaker in a Basement says:

WTF ! Another euphemism from the well? Do you guys ever run out of ways to disguise unpopular ideas?

That was Ms. Prejean’s term, Frank. Nobody here came up with that one.

  41. Jaim says:

Frank, the first step is you. Put the bottle down.

  42. She’s another poster girl against non-opposite marriage, silly.

You used it without quotes — it’s your term. Excuse me if I thought you were familiar with the English language.

Jaim, I find your remark insensitive and offensive, and if you had any grace or civility, you would discontinue such despicable and obnoxious behavior.

  43. Sean D. Martin says:

Frank DiSalle: WTF ! Another euphemism from the well? Do you guys ever run out of ways to disguise unpopular ideas?

Quaker in a B: That was Ms. Prejean’s term, Frank. Nobody here came up with that one.

And she came up with it while in a particularly stressful moment. Given how folks can have some difficulty speaking under those conditions despite supposedly being prepared for them, I wouldn’t make too much out of her coming up with that phrase. More a verbal slip than any considered attempt to sneak a new euphemism past your paranoia.

“We live in a land that you can choose same-sex marriage or an opposite-sex marriage …” There, that better?

  44. The way you lefties come up with some new name for everything to disguise it’s true intent and outcome, I can hardly be accused of paranoia, for believing that this is what happened again,

Just two days ago, I received notification of a “new nutrition for senior citizens”. It’s called SNAP : Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

I opened up the brochure, and read: As of October 1, 2008 Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is the new name for the Federal Food Stamp Program. (Yes, I know, Pres Bush was still in office, but I’d bet dollars to donuts that it wasn’t a conservative who came up with that name change).

  45. Duros62 says:

but I sure would like it be the law of the land that I could marry a transsexual as a woman, instead of having a same – sex marriage.

    Ya, we know.

  46. Sean D. Martin says:

Frank DiSalle: Yes, I know, Pres Bush was still in office, but I’d bet dollars to donuts that it wasn’t a conservative who came up with that name change

Translation: When conservatives come up with something I don’t like I’m convinced it was actually sneaky liberals who did it. Because I’m psychologically incapable of finding anything bad in a conservative or anything good in a liberal. Reality will twist to conform to my psychoses.

  47. mambochicken23 says:

“Reality will twist to conform to my psychoses.”

    Bahahahaha! Sean +1.
