OMG Scary Black People On Train

While I was going down to the Teabagger’s protest on Saturday I noted on Twitter that the ones I was on the subway with were noticeably prickly around some black folks also riding the train.

Here’s a post from conservative Dan Riehl to confirm that the sentiment wasn’t isolated.

Riding out of DC on the Metro, 9/12, there were some folks from South Dakota and also another Mid-West state I can’t recall in the same Metro car. We were talking, nothing special, really – politics, of course.

In the back were maybe ten or so black kids taking up that section of the car. There was no confrontation, just one or two of them talking loudly enough to make sure they’d be heard.

Without resorting to the poor diction it was along the lines of, these are the people who think Obama is the anti-Christ. That McCain he wasn’t chit. Obama’s going to be president as long as he wants, so these people better get used to it, etc. It went on but not really to a level that was so loud, or so confrontational that it needed to be addressed.

We just ignored them without much trouble at all.

I can’t imagine why black folks might be a little wary of these people.

Plus we know two or more black people are a gang, and regardless of their age, race, or class all of us are thugs.

Seriously, this guy? Right out of the Crips, or Bloods. I never know which is which. I come hardcore, growing up on the mean streets of suburban Silver Spring, MD and the thug life of suburban Lauderdale Lakes, FL.

We just ignored them without much trouble at all.

Yet another example of the virulent racism that permeates American Society!

When will we ever have a black governor?

Or a black Secretary of State?

Or a black female Secretary of State?

    Or black Supreme Court Justices?

    And a black President?

You know that ain’t NEVER gonna happen!

I can’t wait for February to hear 14 stories about Martin Luther King, Jr. and 14 stories about Rosa Parks.

  2. Impaler says:

Yep, sounds like a gang to me. People only do that to start trouble.

Oh wait I think this is the link to the story with a picture.

    Re: Frank DiSalle

Very interesting, Frank. That doesn’t have a damn thing to do with the subject of the post, now does it?

I’m betting that the 9-12 group on the train were carrying their crazy signs and wearing their T-shirts with the anti-Obama sentiments on them, and other racist mottos. That’s why Oliver linked to the protest photographs to show what those young kids were confronting the train. Bravo to them for speaking up in a non-confrontational style (in stark contrast to he 9-12ers and their leader, Crazy Glenn Beck).

  5. Jody says:

Yessiree, he ignored ‘em so well he had to run home and write a column about how disruptive they were.

But, of course, the fact that blacks can get elected to high office proves racism is deaddeadDEAD, and the only ones that are teh real racists anymore are democrats and blacks, who want to convert everyone to Islamosocialcommunofascism and make everyone get gay married and have abortions.

  7. Southern Quaker says:

It rather brings to mind O’Reilly’s amazement when he went to dinner at a restaurant in a primarily minority neighborhood and the folks there were actually, you know, polite and well behaved.

  8. rat_bastard says:

I live in constant fear that the scary Pineapple Negro will yell “M-Fer — I want more iced tea.” and I will totally lose my shit.

  9. swamptroll says:

” It went on but not really to a level that was so loud, or so confrontational that it needed to be addressed.”

WHERE MY WHITE PRIVILEGED MALES AT? Thanks to Dan R. for carrying the burden of addressing black teens when they’re at the wrong level in public.

TMZ has tape of me calling Dan Riehl “a jackass” and that’s OTR.

  10. Thank God you guys never rise above the level of glib, nonsensical gibberish. I might to have use that part of the brain I normally use to figure out what Willis is talkin’ ’bout.

  11. swamptroll says:

    Frank,

What’s great about this post by Oliver is that it allows us to harp on the complexities and different tones of racism.

You started with explaining that because Dan Riehl didn’t “address” some black teenagers on a bus (even tho he was clearly threatened) that racism isn’t a problem in the world.

    You’re clearly tone-deaf.

    so get lost

  12. Quaker in a Basement says:

Perhaps Dan could have defused the tension with a genial “Whut up, brah?” or an offer to share some malt liquor with the young bucks.

  13. Dennis says:

True, Quibbie. And I was just thinking that maybe Oliver could relaxed a bit some of that noticeably prickly crowd by reassuring them that he thought Obama was wrong to make fun of Special Olympians that one time. You know, for the bonding effect. Can’t have people being noticeably prickly on the train, ya know.

  14. Tyro says:

Isn’t that just DC? Even our troublesome, loud teens who talk smack on the subway like to talk politics.

Or, possibly, this story is bullshit.

  15. Burn says:

Thank God you guys never rise above the level of glib, nonsensical gibberish

Then maybe you should find some better ways to spend what precious little time you have on Earth than trolling websites where you don’t agree with the content posted.

I would recommend you to ‘get a life’ but seeing how you are at the end of yours, I’ll forgo that as advice.

  16. Jaim says:

Bigots can’t help themselves. This is why the GOP is almost dead.

  17. Quaker in a Basement says:

And I was just thinking that maybe Oliver could relaxed a bit some of that noticeably prickly crowd by reassuring them that he thought Obama was wrong to make fun of Special Olympians that one time.

Because…that’s why white people act all nervous around black people? They might make fun of the Special Olympics?

    Conservative humor, ladies and gerbils.

  18. Wow, this can only get sadder if Frank starts talking about how he’s got a black friend.

  19. Dennis says:

Because…that’s why white people act all nervous around black people? They might make fun of the Special Olympics?

No, Quibbie, because that happens to be the only one of the total of two criticisms of Obama that Oliver has that a tea party participant might agree with him on.

His qualms with his hero on DADT and gay marriage wouldn’t make them less noticeably prickly, I don’t think.

  20. even tho he was clearly threatened

Oh, was he ? What lines did you read that between?

For the record, I was not trying to imply that racism was dead. I was merely pointing out that commenting on the behavior of boisterous teens on a train does not a racist make. I have seen a crowd of teenagers from the local high school, of all mixed races and ethnic groups, intimidate a busload of people who were also of mixed races and ethnic groups.

The fact that were commenting on politics loudly enough for them to be heard by the demonstrators seems to indicate that they were, at a minimum, being mischievous. I’d hardly call it a racial stereotype to say that for some period of time between the ages of 13 and 19, a kid will be a pain in the ass.

    To sum up:

There was no confrontation, just one or two of them talking loudly enough to make sure they’d be heard.

    * * *

We just ignored them without much trouble at all.

You know what made it sadder, Pollak ? Your bringing up my name for no reason.

  21. Wilbur says:

Perhaps Dan could have defused the tension with a genial “Whut up, brah?”

Or “Who let the dogs out? Woof woof!”

  22. Jody says:

See guys? Just because Mr. Riehl called the group “technically thugs” (because ‘technically’ makes it all okay), and that they would not have lasted long if the 9/12ers decided to “do something about them”, and because Obama’s “post racial America” might end up more racially divided than in the last 30 years, which would be Obama’s fault and the fault of those unpleasant little brown kids for getting uppity in the face of real Americans-that doesn’t mean Mr. Riehl or his defenders are racist shitheels at all.

Oh wait. That’s exactly what it does. Carry on.

  23. Southern Quaker says:

Yes, the burden of racism post-election is Obama’s to carry, because the scared white guy automatically thinks that boisterous black kids on a train are “technically thugs.”

  24. Southern Quaker says:

I’d hardly call it a racial stereotype to say that for some period of time between the ages of 13 and 19, a kid will be a pain in the ass.

Neither would I, Frank. Except for, you know, the whole part where he mentions the kids’ race and assumes that they are “technically thugs.”

  25. Tyro says:

You know, if the “thugs” in a city are the ones getting in your face by mocking you for your futile opposition to the president, the city you’re visiting is a pretty low key, safe place.

Apparently, not only is DC Hollywood for ugly people, it’s Compton for policy-nerds.

  26. Amused Observer says:

So how does one tell the difference from punk kids cursing and making intimidating remarks and so called thugs? Are there such things as young black thugs? If so are they dangerous?

  27. Sean Thornton says:

I once shot a man in San Bernadino, just to watch him die. And also because he might have been planning to hit me later. So just to be on the safe side…

  28. Southern Quaker says:

AO, how was what those kids reportedly said on that bus any more intimidating than some of the protest signs comparing Obama to Stalin and Hitler? Or the t-shirts suggesting the Tree of Liberty needs to be watered with blood?

  29. Cory says:

Dude should be happy kids were even remotely discussing politics. When I was (a white kid) in (a white) high school, our bus rides mostly consisted of small fires, huffing, and animal sacrifice. Had a gaggle of sign-bearing weirdos from the Ozarks wandered into our lives, they’d have heard much more controversial political assessments, believe me.

Oh wait, they did … and they were called Evangelist street preachers. And they were crazier than we were.

  30. Southern Quaker says:

It seems arrogant – not to mention foolish – of the protesters to think that they could come into DC and not be confronted by people who were a tad pissed off at their behavior towards a locally very popular president.

As I recall Cindy Sheehan wasn’t exactly warmly welcomed in Crawford.

  31. In civilized locales , between the mountain ranges that isolate most of our liberals — thank God — I can fully understand why people riding a Metro , and hearing loud teens talking about their politics in voices loud enough to be heard, might view them as “thugs” [technically]. In some places, kids engaged in that type of behavior, are not called “angry youth railing against the establishment.”

Amused Observer: That’s easy. Thugs say cool stuff like “noam sane” and “noah meen” . They “axe” questions, and “get down” with stuff. They wear baseball hats that are a size or so too big, and the latest word for “cool” is “sick”.

The most obvious sign is the earphones, where you can hear the music from 8 to ten seats away — so loud, it is a miracle that blood isn’t pouring out of every orifice in their head .

And, they are usually between 13 and 19, and come in all races, ethnic groups and nationalities .

  32. PD100 says:

Thugs say cool stuff like “noam sane” and “noah meen” . They “axe” questions, and “get down” with stuff. They wear baseball hats that are a size or so too big, and the latest word for “cool” is “sick”.

That’s justifiable outrage, I must say. That must mean that Presizit Obama just wanted the school speech to himsef’ just so he can chat up wit sum girlz.

    WORRRD.

    p.s.

I’ll PayPal you an Ebonics decoder ring, Frank. Jus’ so you can keep it real.

  33. Tyro says:

Yes, this seems to fall under the category of “can dish it out but can’t take it” — a phenomenon all too common with wingnuts.

  34. Jaim says:

“the latest word for “cool” is “sick”

    What are you Frank, 90?

  37. Amused Observer says:

    Well SQ,
I don’t think many people would be intimidated by signs comparing a politician to Hitler. How many have we seen of those in the last 9 years? Many. Pithy quotations of Thomas Jefferson might seem scary. The sentiment seems scarier muttered in private rather than on a cardboard sign.

But the conventional wisdom is that young black men commit a proportionally high rate of violent crime. Now the conventional wisdom may be wrong. Jesse Jackson admitted to being intimidated by the idea of young black men, what does he know? So how could one tell if they were being confronted by young loud foul mouthed punks or actual criminals?

  38. Shorebird says:

I used to teach at a high school that was about 85% Hispanic. Some Stepford soccer moms from the district’s “country club” high school coming to see a game between the two schools had the nerve to ask me if it was safe to park their cars (where I had mine parked.) I looked them straight in the eye and said, ” Sure, the school district pays off the local gangs so our cars won’t get vandalized.” They believed me.

  39. Jaim says:

Because the kids didn’t do anything criminal or violent? Yet the fact of their blackness makes them thugs? Because Republicans are bigots?

  40. Amused Observer says:

    Jsim,
It’s not unreasonable to feel intimidated by young foul mouthed punks acting aggressively.

  41. Amused Observer says:

That certainly doesn’t look right. Jaim

  42. Tyro says:

It’s not unreasonable to feel intimidated by young foul mouthed punks acting aggressively.

Once again, stereotypical “can dish it out but can’t take it” behavior from the wingnuts. If you can’t handle a few people at the end of the metro car talking loudly about what idiots you are and the stupidity and delusions of your gutter ideology, then you shouldn’t be out waving signs that Obama is a foreign-born hitler who’s going to implement communism in America.

  43. Amused Observer says:

So Tyro what would the correct response be?

  44. Tyro says:

So Tyro what would the correct response be?

Standard public transit etiquette: ignore it. Incidentally, the same reaction most of us in DC took to the teabaggers.

Riehl describes a bunch of people in the back of the metro car loudly talking smack about the political views of the people Riehl was sitting with in his section of the metro car. That’s basically the least threatening situation you can be in, and anyone intimidated by it who is showing up to DC for a political protest representing a bizarre fringe movement of birthers and torture advocates pretty much marks one as a political loser, much like the angry right-wing uncle who throws a tantrum when a member of the family interrupts his rants to correct his factually-challenged beliefs.

It is no surprise that a group of rightwing freaks here to angrily protest against Obama doing what he said he would do when he was elected would be intimidated and afraid of people angrily telling them that their ridiculous beliefs are full of shit. Cowards and losers who get scared when someone questions their false belief system: they shouldn’t be out protesting if they get freaked out when they have to listen to someone publicly condemning their beliefs.

If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. They came to DC believing they were strongly proclaiming the truth. They left in fear when they had to deal with people publicly saying they were full of shit.

  45. Amused Observer says:

So if the shoe was on the other foot and a group of young white toughs was talking smack about civil rights, voting, and black people that would be the equivilent?

  46. Jaim: “Jive talk”? Holy crap! The cleaners called — they have your zoot suit. After 60 years, if you don’t come and get it, they have to sell it.

Burn, with your incredibly arrogant, bigoted, mean – spirited , and just plain ugly attitude , I seriously doubt you will outlive me. “I’m near the end of my life”. What a POS you are.

  47. Quaker in a Basement says:

So if the shoe was on the other foot and a group of young white toughs was talking smack about civil rights, voting, and black people that would be the equivilent?

No, that’s not the equivalency you’re looking for AO.

If Dan encountered white kids on the train talking about how McCain wasn’t s**t, would he have called them thugs? I doubt it. So what you have is:

Rowdy white kids on a train = kids being kids
Rodwy black kids on a train = technically thugs

  48. Amused Observer says:

    Quaker,
You are not addressing the topic. Tyro mentions black toughs talking smack about the aspirations of white protesters and I brought up white toughs talking smack about the aspirations of black protesters.

  49. Jaim says:

    What black protesters?

At some point you’d think the GOP would stop basing their entire ideology on hypotheticals.

The simple fact is you guys are racist bed-wetters. Yes, lots of black people live in the city. And calling a popular black president “Hitler” will not endear you to them, and indeed they might wonder out loud as to why you’re such a short-sighted bigot and why you keep stating bizarre birther sentiments.

    Tough titties.

    Grow. The. Fuck. Up.

If you hold idiotic racist beliefs, you’re going to be treated like an idiotic racist.

  50. Amused Observer says:

    Jaim,
You’re out of your element, You need reading comprehension skills to know what black protesters.

  51. Enraged Bull Limpet says:

“Technically thugs?” It’d be interesting to see what might happen if Riehl were confronted by more practical thugs of any, um, stripe.

  52. Quaker in a Basement says:

You are not addressing the topic. Tyro mentions black toughs talking smack about the aspirations of white protesters and I brought up white toughs talking smack about the aspirations of black protesters.

And I’m telling you you’re missing the obvious. Riehl would have shrugged it off if the young people in the back of the train car were white. Because they were black, he felt threatened.

  53. cj says:

Amused Observer, “”So if the shoe was on the other foot and a group of young white toughs was talking smack about civil rights, voting, and black people that would be the equivalent?

I do believe that is what happened in the 1950s and 60’s during the civil rights movement. But add the police force, national guards, police dogs, KKK, and water canons in the mix and then let’s compare what happen to these tea party protesters is equivalent.

  54. cj says:

Oops meant to say, “then let’s compare if what happen to these tea party protesters are equivalent.”

  55. roo roo says:

Isolation from culture or a culture bereft of “outsider” culture can produce weird results. Like tightened white sphincters on a metropolitan subway. I experienced the same feeling being from a small Texas town at 17 but not at my advanced “adult” age.

  56. Southern Quaker says:

Actually, considering some of the video we’ve seen of the town hall meetings (people get shouted down for supporting Obama’s plan, or OMG speaking Spanish, not to mention the guy who was harassed and intimidated for bringing a public option banner to the Mall during the 9/12 event) I think the reaction of the kids on the train was relatively mild.

  57. rat_bastard says:

    “scary Pineapple Negro”

So the name of my new punk band.

    A.

I like “fear of a Scary Pineapple Negro” as either the band name or the name of the first album.

  58. Tyro says:

People talking smack about politics and mocking protesters is not generally considered threatening under any circumstances. Public transit etiquette generally requires that there be no direct interaction between passengers who do not already know each other, and everyone seems to have followed that pretty closely.

What we do see is that a bunch of people who decided that they were going to be “tough guys” coming to DC and showing Obama “who was really in charge here” seem to have gotten scared when they found themselves outnumbered by a city full of people who disagreed with them and weren’t afraid to make a public show of it.

  59. Tyro : That’s the biggest load of rubbish I have ever heard. Dr Phil meets Charlie Rose, with a dash of Bill Maher.

    Hehe.

  60. Bruce says:

Everything that Dan Riehl learned about black people, he learned from the opening scene in American History X when the white college student starts clutching her handbag in front of a black classmate.

Everything that Frank learned about black people, he learned from watching Barbara Billingsley translate Jive on Airplane.

  61. Tyro says:

So if the shoe was on the other foot and a group of young white toughs was talking smack about civil rights, voting, and black people that would be the equivilent?

I believe they were the ones out protesting on the mall that day. As one can see, they were perfectly happy to “dish it out,” but when some people on the metro started publicly mocking them from the other side of the car to their friends, they got scared. A classic “dish it out but can’t take it” scenario. It’s funny to see how intimidated internet tough guys like Riehl get when people have the audacity to mock their worthless beliefs in public.

They came to DC because Glen Beck told them “we surround them.” They came to DC and found themselves… surrounded. By people who weren’t shy about letting them know what they though. And they cowered in fear SHOCKED that anyone would ever take issue with their politics.

This sort of fearfulness and wimpitude is actually typical of conservatives: they’ve lived their entire lives convinced that they were the “real Americans” who knew the “truth” about Barack Obama, and when someone without fear piped up and said their views were bullshit, they didn’t know what to do. They couldn’t intimidate their children, wives, or cousins like they usually do when they get off on a typical conservative tear.

These are a group of would-be political activists completely out of their element. What’s funny is that they found themselves unable to handle political opposition IN WASHINGTON, DC. AO, they’re not cut out for protesting. Their views are best left at the dinner table, were these political “tough guys” can act out their fantasies without getting scared.

  62. Bruce says:

As for Dan Riehl, he might have felt better among the symbols of the historical freedom fighters. I would suggest to him a walk from the corner of Malcolm X Avenue and MLK Jr. Avenue up to old Anacostia and to the Frederick Douglass House nearby.

I think you don’t become a thug until you threaten directly or implicitly to violate the rights of others, e.q. the fellow who bore the sign saying “We Came Unarmed – This Time.” Until then, you are just a critic.

  63. Indeed says:

Their views are best left at the dinner table, were these political “tough guys” can act out their fantasies without getting scared.

Well, I’d say that their views are best left to the dust bin of history, but whom am I kidding? Racist shitbirds will always be with us. Hopefully their numbers are dwindling.

And you see the chickenshit “tough guys” in these very comments. They talk tough, but never back it up. One wingnut even offered to fly another commenter into town for a “meeting”, then quickly chickened out when the offer was accepted. That’s how the Dittoheads roll. Hopefully we won’t see any more Dittoheads pull the ultimate chicken-out via gun-fueled rampage revenge fantasies.

We have a bunch of apologists here for course foul mouthed young punks. Reil never said his group was scared only wary. None of the locals would admit that it is perfectly normal to be wary of groups of aggressive punks acting in an intimidating manner. That is only common sense.

Black youth commits violent crime way out of proportion to their numbers. That is an absolute fact that none of the apologists will address. Instead we get a bunch of viatrol directed at “chicken shits”. If the shoe was on the other foot there would be nothing but cries of racism and remarks about the Klan. It would be funny if it weren’t really so sad.

  67. I am amazed at the amount of pseudo social psychological gibberish that the lefties are trying to pawn off as scientific observations: “We all know that the demonstrators are this, and really believe that

Pretty sure street criminals don’t give a damn about politics, AO. People talking loud enough to be heard on a train is rather different from “aggressive punks acting in an intimidating manner.” Pretty sure some of those folks would find one of the kids asking them “Excuse me, sir, is this seat taken?” to be aggressive and intimidating.

Do you folks even KNOW any black people in your daily lives? Particularly any black people who don’t agree with your politics?

  69. Burn , you need to to know something: Your disrespect for the elderly earns you no credit. You claim to be a liberal , and , as such , you , to a degree, represent the liberals on this blog.

Is this the fabled caring and compassionate liberalism you like to contrast with the cold, unfeeling conservatives?

More importantly, do you have parents that are living , or grandparents that are living ?

How would it make you feel to know that, at this very moment, some guy who didn’t even know them was saying, “Then maybe you should find some better ways to spend what precious little time you have on Earth”, and “I would recommend you to ‘get a life’ but seeing how you are at the end of yours, I’ll forgo that as advice”?

See how that works , Burn ?

In other words, you are a savage bigot, with the principles of a black mamba. I wish for you that you live to be 63, and then , whilst surrounded by people like yourself, you live to be 93.

  70. Quaker in a Basement says:

Black youth commits violent crime way out of proportion to their numbers. That is an absolute fact that none of the apologists will address.

Oh the delicious irony. A curse worthy of the greek tragedies. Were it not for the fact that the rest of us suffer when foolish liberals get their way I can’t think of a better retribution than let the mean spirited ignorant half of the liberal progressive movement live in the world they struggle to create.

    So Mike,
How can one differenciate a street criminal from a loud foul mouthed punk?

“I guess whether or not they’re thugs depends on what they’re shouting about.”

Care to video tape various demonstrators of different pursuasions and then critique the body language with the sound turned off?

As to your last question, almost all black people disagree with my politics, something like 97%.

    So Mike,
How can one differenciate(sic) a street criminal from a loud foul mouthed punk?

Do you still have your wallet?

  78. Duros62 says:

But you address it,AO. Why do young Blacks commit proportionally more crimes, against themselves and others? And what do we do about it?

Dude, shut up! We don’t want to think about underlying causes. Especially when we have a Stalin nazi muslim commie Hitler socialist hippie peace freak in the White House.

  79. Quaker in a Basement says:

If it is a group or gang of (insert color here)talking smack to see if they can get a rise out of tourists then yes.

Tourists? I think you meant to say protesters.

  80. Quaker in a Basement says:

Besides, Riehl had no reason to be afraid. He was there with like 80 trillion of his friends, right?

  81. rip says:

As always – the Conservatives are at their toughest when they are kicking virtual ass.

  82. locus says:

    Impaler,

If you think that group was a bunch of tourists, you’re fooling yourself.

    locus

  83. Impaler says:

I had know Idea they protested on subways as well, “I stand corrected” if your are from out of town, you are done with your days work, going back to the hotel or going to see the sites, well you get the point.

Or this point, it is okay, for one race to start shit with a smaller group of another race as long as their protesters. I see how it goes. Oh and what of neighborhoods, here is a CNN article on Diversity.

And this must have been a nieghborhood welcome commitee.
    http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/09/07/new.york.beating/index.html?iref=newssearch

  84. Quaker in a Basement says:

it is okay, for one race to start shit with a smaller group of another race as long as their protesters

Smaller group? I think you just made that up.

  85. Impaler says:

No, I believe that can be inferred in the article, it’s a reading comprehension thing.

  86. Quaker in a Basement says:

No, I believe that can be inferred in the article, it’s a reading comprehension thing.

You are mistaken. Mr. Riehl says the “adults” who were there could have easily have done something about the “thugs” if it had become necessary. There’s nothing in his article from which you may infer that the so-called thugs outnumbered anyone.

  87. mike in dc says:

AO, are you actually on friendly interpersonal terms with any of them?

  88. Impaler says:

SEVERAL – ADJECTIVE: 1. Being of a number more than two or three but not many: several miles away. severally – Webster

But, I guess you could be technically right, we don’t know how many children were there, with the protestors.

“Mr. Riehl says the “adults” who were there (could have easily have done something about the “thugs”). This does not mean outnumbered, it means big enough to handle the stated number of thugs.

But, like I said, it’s a reading comprehension thing.

  89. Quaker in a Basement says:

But, like I said, it’s a reading comprehension thing.

You can’t comprehend what isn’t written. Like I said, you made that up.

  90. Quaker in a Basement says:

At any rate, the point remains: Mr. Riehl felt uncomfortable because black people spoke loudly on a train. He said this makes them “thugs.”

    He’s revealing a telling bias.

  91. Impaler says:

Quaker, I am sorry, but when Oliver goes to the trouble to link the the whole story, I usually read the whole story.

“He’s revealing a telling bias.” Well he is the author so of course we see it from his eyes. As far as bias, true, I haven’t met a truly unbiased person in my entire life.

  92. cj says:

AO-”Black youth commits violent crime way out of proportion to their numbers.”

It’s more like Black youths get charge way out of proportion to their numbers. I suspect White youths do a fair amount of violent crimes too, but some how they always seem to get a slap on the wrist, or their mommy and daddy have the money to fight the charges.

“If the shoe was on the other foot there would be nothing but cries of racism and remarks about the Klan.”

Did you see my comment? You asked, “So if the shoe was on the other foot and a group of young white toughs was talking smack about civil rights, voting, and black people that would be the equivalent?”

That has happened but it was way worse than what happen to those tea party protesters. Kids making fun of a bunch of protesters with crazy ass signs and t-shirts saying stupid and hateful things about the President is not the same as Black protesters dressed normally with signs asking for equal rights, and marching while having people throw rocks at their heads. Also having law and military enforcements use water canons or police dogs to stop them from protesting.

I just don’t see the equivalent.

  93. Duros62 says:

This does not mean outnumbered, it means big enough to handle the stated number of thugs.

Except for the danger of soiling themselves in the process.

  94. Bruce says:

A group of teenagers talking political smack in a subway car isn’t “black people’s problem” – or a problem at all, just the public expression of derision of political opponents, i.e. the same goddamn thing as was done on the street that same day, just with fewer misspelled signs.

And even if it were a “problem” it isn’t “black people’s problem” any more than my worthless cousin smoking weed and knocking up women and not paying child support is “German-American people’s problem.”

  95. ‘Thank God you guys never rise above the level of glib, nonsensical gibberish’

You mean like President Obama is a racist Indonesian Muslim welfare thug?

  96. ‘In civilized locales , between the mountain ranges that isolate most of our liberals — thank God — I can fully understand why people riding a Metro , and hearing loud teens talking about their politics in voices loud enough to be heard, might view them as “thugs” [technically].’

What? Kids don’t talk loudly where you come from?

Did you grow up at the Emily Post institute?

  97. Amused Observer says:

    cj,
    You must be right.
“It’s more like Black youths get charge way out of proportion to their numbers. I suspect White youths do a fair amount of violent crimes too, but some how they always seem to get a slap on the wrist, or their mommy and daddy have the money to fight the charges”

With 50% of the murders in this country committed by young black males I’m sure that the statistics are completely skewed by the number of white kids who get off with a slap on the wrist because of daddy’s money. That happens mostly to kin of the Kennedy’s.

  98. ‘Amused Observer: That’s easy. Thugs say cool stuff like “noam sane” and “noah meen” . They “axe” questions, and “get down” with stuff. They wear baseball hats that are a size or so too big, and the latest word for “cool” is “sick”.’

Maybe you’d prefer they spent all day spitting chewing tobacco while they shoot crystal meth and plaster Confederate flags in their aging pick-ups while hanging around the infield at Nascar races?

Or would that be too highbrow for you?

  99. ‘So if the shoe was on the other foot and a group of young white toughs was talking smack about civil rights, voting, and black people that would be the equivilent?’

What the Hell are you talking about? There were SCORES of angry White kids in the South doing just that during the Civil Rights movement; I suppose you don’t remember Black kids being escorted to Southern schools by the National Guard during the 1960’s ?

  100. ‘You are not addressing the topic. Tyro mentions black toughs talking smack about the aspirations of white protesters and I brought up white toughs talking smack about the aspirations of black protesters.’

No you didn’t; you tried to defend a White tea bagger who thought his reception from local Black kids who support President Obama was racist, and not that he and his group bringing signs onto a public transportation system comparing Obama to Hitler would possibly be confrontational, so instead you tried a false analogy of ‘a group of young white toughs was talking smack about civil rights, voting, and black people,’ which as we all know, never happened in the US, especially during the Civil Rights movement, because their desire for equality and dignity in an unjust society it’s exactly the same thing as people carrying signs that say Obama isn’t an American, he’s a Socialist/Communist/Fascist Muslim who’s trying to destroy the country.

    It’s EXACTLY the same thing.

  101. ‘I am amazed at the amount of pseudo social psychological gibberish that the lefties are trying to pawn off as scientific observations: “We all know that the demonstrators are this, and really believe that”’

OMG; this coming from the leader of the all Black youth are punks choir?

    Spare us.

  102. Jaim says:

O.W.com has become fly paper for bigots to out themselves.

  103. ‘“Mr. Riehl says the “adults” who were there (could have easily have done something about the “thugs”). This does not mean outnumbered, it means big enough to handle the stated number of thugs.’

So what the fuck were they so scared of?

  104. ‘With 50% of the murders in this country committed by young black males I’m sure that the statistics are completely skewed by the number of white kids who get off with a slap on the wrist because of daddy’s money. That happens mostly to kin of the Kennedy’s.’

Are you really challenging the fact that Black kids committing crimes are sentenced far more harshly than White kids who commit crimes?

  105. JR — I didn’t grow up “between the mountains”. I live 5 miles from NYC. I have heard kids talking loudly. When I was a kid, I was one. But, back then, when the driver had had enough of our wildness, he would stop the bus, and say, “We’re not moving another inch until you kids settle down.” That was usually followed by anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes of quiet.

Neither bus drivers nor passengers have that kind of courage anymore.

I hate to pull “when I was a kid” stuff on you, but times have indeed changed, and, yes, things are more tranquil far from the urban areas. I salute you for even having heard of Emily Post. There is hope for you yet.

  106. Jaim says:

I’ve always felt safer in American cities. When I lived in a semi-rural area, the per capita crime rate was much higher (robbery was rampant), not to mention the levels of meth and heroin addiction.

But it’s 2009. Please stop being afraid of young black men. Either that or stay home in your mom’s basement so the rest of us can go about our business of acting like reality-based adults.

  107. Tyro says:

If you can’t handle being in a city without feeling intimidated by young people, then you don’t belong in a city. The teabaggers thought they were going to come to intimidate the public with their fringe beliefs. Instead, as real shows, they got scared when someone had the audacity to say they were full of crap.

This is typical right-wing fear/bullshit: anyone who disagrees with them is a “thug”. Since they’re scared of anyone calling them to the carpet for their execrable beliefs– this was no doubt a car full of birthers– they demand that “someone” do “something” about the “thugs” who have to audacity to mock the moronic fringe politics of Riehl’s gutter ideology. Typical right-wing entitlement complex: this jerk came to OUR town and got indignant that the public thought his views were crap. If that makes him uncomfortable, he needs to go back to whichever pack of losers he associates with who thinks his worthless political views are wonderful.

It’s pretty clear to me that AO, Impaler, and Frank are inequipped to handle life out in public and need to wax indignant that youth aren’t showing proper “respect.” Pretty much more reason why right-wing jokers aren’t to be taken seriously.

  108. Impaler says:

jrfunkenstein, “So what the fuck were they so scared of?” You know I am tired of people that think whites are scared of blacks. Or vice versa, perhaps this just shows the problems in society with political correctness; nowhere did I read they were scared. (Again, reading comprehension problem here) if he wrote it like this, “When visiting that city, the young people on the public transportation system where rude, but we weren’t afraid of being accosted.” Thin skinned people suck.

  109. Amused Observer says:

    Jr.Funk,
It’s fairly obvious you didn’t actually read the article but no big deal, with your comprehension skills it doesn’t really matter.

“Are you really challenging the fact that Black kids committing crimes are sentenced far more harshly than White kids who commit crimes?”

No, what I was saying was they commit 50% of the murders in this country. And I was mocking the idea that there were enough murders in the country committed by priviledged white kids to skew the statistics enough that the 15-25 yr. old male slice of the 12-13% demographic that blacks make of the populationas a whole was made to look so bad in the murder statistics.

Aren’t there any problems in Canada that need your attention. It always puzzles me why the Canucks bother with American political blogs.

  110. Quaker in a Basement says:

No, what I was saying was they commit 50% of the murders in this country.

    And?

Any time I see a black man I should act as if he’s a potential murderer?

  111. Impaler says:

Tyro, “If you can’t handle being in a city without feeling intimidated by young people, then you don’t belong in a city.” Yep, or parts of the city, my company will not service certain zip codes in Los Angeles, not for the intimidation, or unless by intimidation you mean “rob and murder”. Yea it’s all a psychological.

  112. Amused Observer says:

    Do as you please Quaker.

  113. Any time I see a black man I should act as if he’s a potential murderer?

    No, only his upper half

  114. Impaler says:

Frank, you are a funny guy.

  115. Jaim says:

“You know I am tired of people that think whites are scared of blacks”

So stop wetting yourself every time you’re in the big bad scary city.

  116. Impaler says:

    LMAO,

    1. Looking for a job, you handle those zip codes Jaim, and you can have those routes plus bonuses. I can start you to work tomorrow. But the added insurance cost comes out of your pay.

    2. See, Jaim when you run a company, and you care for the people who work for you, you do not send them into harm’s way, in your case, I am making an exception.

  117. Amused Observer says:

    There you go Jaim,
A job in America! You can come home now. It’s all good in Obama land, with the arrival of the new secular messiah. No need to hide in shame as a failure in a foreign land. Plus you’ll be creating a job creation credit for Obama. It’s win/win.

  118. canadian bacon says:

“Aren’t there any problems in Canada that need your attention. It always puzzles me why the Canucks bother with American political blogs.”

    Only fools look inward.

  119. Jaim says:

If you’re in a bad part of town, you obviously need to watch your back.

The DC Metro is not a bad part of town. Anybody who thinks it is is a coward or a bigot.

Why is it so impossible for wing-nut bigots to understand that living abroad is really fulfilling in a lot of ways?

I know, I know, too many scary brown people for your little lizard-brains to handle. Like I said up-thread, you guys are welcome to be racist fucks. Just don’t be shocked when civilized adults treat you like racist fucks.

    Simple.

  120. Quaker in a Basement says:

By the way, what were anti-tax, anti-collectivist protesters doing taking public transportation(!) to the protest?

  121. Jaim says:

BTW, now that I’ve actually read the whole thing by Riehl, he isn’t just saying what a bigoted little coward he is (”OMG, BLACK PEOPLE!”) he also has a little quip at the end about how he and his buddies could “take” the kids out if they had to.

So on the one hand, he’s a sniveling little bitch, and on the other hand he’s manly-man claiming that a group of adults could beat up a group of, in his own words, “kids.”

Stay classy, Republicans. Your cowardice knows no bounds.

  122. Impaler says:

“Why is it so impossible for wing-nut bigots to understand that living abroad is really fulfilling in a lot of ways?”
Jaim, I can get you a work visa for the USA, I am starting to wonder if you have ever really lived here.

As for living abroad, I have done so in the Army, and I have a home in Indonesia. I spend on average 2 months a year in Asia. I love it, and America/Asia business is where the money is, and oh wise Jaim what part of the enlightened world do you reside?

  123. Impaler says:

Quaker, ok something we can agree on, that was what I thought, and with kids in tow.

  124. Jaim says:

“I can get you a work visa for the USA”

US citizens don’t need work visas for their home country, dumbass.

Hard to believe you’ve made it out of the US. I have a hard time imagining you making your way to the airport.

  125. Impaler says:

Jaim, if you spend word for word with me, I shall make your wit bankrupt. You write yet say nothing, so I surmise that you are declining the job offer in the fair City of Angels. How proud your parents must be for sending their darling abroad to represent America’s greatness.

You are truly a wonder! – Impaler

  126. Jaim says:

I have a job. You can’t afford me. And while LA is nice to visit, it’s one of that last places I’d ever want to live. California is in a bad way right now. Seoul is a hell of a lot more fun and interesting.

I’m glad to hear you’re hiring, however. Obama’s stimulus package is working as needed. And the Bush Recession is finally over. (Let’s hope the recovery is as speedy as possible.)

“How proud your parents must be for sending their darling abroad to represent America’s greatness.”

Serious question: Are you drunk again?

You are truly a fuckwit! – Jaim

  127. Amused Observer says:

“BTW, now that I’ve actually read the whole thing by Riehl,”

LOL, How many comments has our little ex-pat made before actually knowing what he was commenting on?

    “You can’t afford me.”

LOL, You’ve priced yourself out of the market at 30 G’s, shows what you’re worth. I pay my guys that much if they’ll show up 19 out of 20 days a month, have a driver’s license and common sense.

  128. Impaler says:

AO, and he thinks the Obama Porkulus package is helping the economy, well I guess he could think I run a Union, or community aggravating group. California is dead, Hell the Democrats shut of the water, now I guess, Obama will turn off the lights.

  129. Quaker in a Basement says:

AO, and he thinks the Obama Porkulus package is helping the economy,

He’s in good company on that one. The Fed. The Wall Street Journal. But I’m sure you rely on the opinion of someone more reliable–Glenn Beck maybe?

  130. ‘When I was a kid, I was one. But, back then, when the driver had had enough of our wildness, he would stop the bus, and say, “We’re not moving another inch until you kids settle down.” That was usually followed by anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes of quiet.’

They were on a subway, not a bus.

‘I salute you for even having heard of Emily Post. There is hope for you yet.’

The irony of you saluting me on awareness of Emily Post while ignoring the tenets of respect, civility and decorum is obviously lost on you.

‘Rudeness is the weak man’s imitation of strength.’

    Eric Hoffer

  131. ‘nowhere did I read they were scared’

Which is why he writes about it in the first place and labels them thugs? Because he was so unconcerned about them?

    Please.

  132. Dennis says:

LOL, You’ve priced yourself out of the market at 30 G’s, shows what you’re worth. I pay my guys that much if they’ll show up 19 out of 20 days a month, have a driver’s license and common sense.
    –AO….. FTW

And if they speak English, they’re amply qualified for the job Jaim had to leave the county for, AO.

  133. ‘Aren’t there any problems in Canada that need your attention. It always puzzles me why the Canucks bother with American political blogs.’

Yes, the problem of vast numbers of ignorant American regressives like you.

  134. ‘California is dead, Hell the Democrats shut of the water, now I guess, Obama will turn off the lights.’

And who’s been Governor there for how long?

  135. Impaler says:

Jr. the Democrats control the states budget and have for a long time, its they way it works, the Governor only signs the bill, if it wasn’t for the rule that it takes a 2/3rds of the assembly to raise taxes we would be really screwed. But hey Google is free, so a little education couldn’t hurt.

The people had to recall the pervious Governor for the type of corruption that we currently have at the federal level. The LA Times even admits that our recession is not over, and will not be over for some time. Not a Bush or Obama issue, its internal mismanagement, by the Democrats.

  136. Quaker in a Basement says:

Jr. the Democrats control the states budget and have for a long time, its they way it works, the Governor only signs the bill, if it wasn’t for the rule that it takes a 2/3rds of the assembly to raise taxes we would be really screwed.

Democrats have a 2/3 majority? I did not know that.

  137. Jaim says:

How long has Republican Schwarzineger been in charge?

    Eight years or so?

  138. Sean Thornton says:

Oliver, just wanted to check… you did get the talking point about the whole “racist” canard not holding any water any more because people (can’t imagine who) tend to toss the charge out at the drop of a hat?

    Didn’t you?

  139. ‘Jr. the Democrats control the states budget and have for a long time, its they way it works, the Governor only signs the bill,’

Oh…I get it….Democrats make the Governor sign the bill he’s vehemently opposed to….makes perfect sense.

‘The people had to recall the pervious Governor for the type of corruption that we currently have at the federal level.’

The 8 month old administration is exhibiting sings of corruption, but not the 8 year administration that started a war on a pack of lies, then mismanaged it and lied about it, that flouted the Constitution by illegally spying on US citizens then lied about it, that spit on the Geneva Conventions and lied about it?

Yet NONE of that bothered you, did it?

  140. Impaler says:

Quaker, Democrats have a 2/3 majority? I did not know that. They don’t, and it was not inferred, but there are 80 Democrats and 48 Republicans, not quite 2/3rds, we are in the process of recalling Anthony Adams, one of the Republicans who sided with Democrats, for the historic raise in taxes in the Golden State, and for those that want to beat up Schwarzenegger, at least he got cuts of spending in the compromise. Again the vote was over 2/3rds no way to survive a veto on that math.

  141. Quaker in a Basement says:

They don’t, and it was not inferred, but there are 80 Democrats and 48 Republicans, not quite 2/3rds

It was inferred, even if it wasn’t implied.

So what you’re saying is, the Dems don’t control the budget, right?
