Hysteria Over Obama Speech As Indicator

LA Times’ Tim Rutten

Republican officials such as the Florida state chairman are playing a dangerous game with an unhinged segment of public opinion that regards Obama not as an elected official with whom they disagree, but as an illegitimate usurper of the presidency.

That paranoid fantasy is what’s really behind the ‘birther’ movement and the allegations that the president is — take your pick — a secret Marxist or a secret Muslim.

It’s the kind of fanciful anxiety that produces comments like this, posted on a conservative website this week: ‘Barack Obama and his left-wing Chicago machine regime are putting into place laws and institutions which will insure that there will never again be free elections in America.’

These are the people who are stockpiling ammunition and keeping their children at home next Tuesday.

This is the same kind of speech that gave Tim McVeigh ideas. Only its much worse now.

It’s strange that so many of the folks that are puting out false and vicious statements about President Obama actually called themselves christians. They say they love the constution yet they twist and distort everything. What bible are they reading out of? I didn’t particularly like George Bush, but I didn’t respect him or go to town hall meetings and spred rumor that he rode the sort bus.

I can’t get that “thigh slapping’” comparison between Beck’s recent rant session and that scene from “Blazing Saddles” featured on “Countdown” a few days ago out of my head. Trouble is: this really isn’t funny. These people are dangerously unhinged and made even more dangerous by their self-righteous white-supremacist based sense of entitlement…

  6. Jaim says:

I love how these racist clowns will, in the same breath, question Obama’s nationality or call him a Socialist, then mention that he has failed to unite the country.

But sanity and rationality will win in the end.

Let’s face it, these wing-nuts want a Civil War do-over. They’ve never been happy with the way things turned out the first time! Right wing media is stoking this madness.

When W. wanted to speak to schoolchildren, we got the ‘My Pet Goat’ moment. I don’t hear anyone referring to that as political indoctrination.
