Nowhere near as much as those who have served, I’m certain, but a bit.

Why do I get the feeling I have more time backing down then you have with that SWO tag on your chest?
I didn’t say it’s not a ship…of course it is. I said…we “call” it a boat. Of course I also have to say that after 38 years before calling it enough…I may be wrong…or just forgetful.

And Jay Tea…Even though my son likes playing with those F16 “Aircraft”…I’m also in favor of those that go to sea in “ships”.

It was funny. This is very much how I felt as a SWO (Surface Warfare Officer).

And, yes, it is a “ship” all Commissioned Surfacefgoing Naval vessels are referred to as “ships”. Boat is a term reserved for RHIB’s and other “carry on” watercraft.

Submarines are also referred to as “boats”

This ship is a Guided Missile Destroyer (DDG) and is a ship but what we refer to as a “small boy” (along with Frigates)

And Air Force guys call planes “aircraft.”

I appreciate the info, OldVet. I am, indeed, a sandcrab, but one who has a great deal of respect and admiration and affection for the Navy — and the men and women who serve or have served.

I’ve been aboard the USS Massachusetts twice, and it is an amazing experience — well worth the 3-hour (each way) trip.

Back to the video… I didn’t like it. Not my style.

So I’ll not watch it again.

But I do like that our sailors are having fun while fulfilling their duty, and I might pass it along to some other folks who might enjoy it.

I think your understanding is based on a misunderstandding of what’s literal and what’s real. In the sailors world there are many terms used that sandcrabs (those who don’t go to sea)…don’t understand.
Such as…
Barge. An admiral’s boat.
Gig. A captain or commander’s personal boat.
And then there’s “Boats”…From the Anglo-Saxon “bat” that stood for a small ship or vessel. Also slang for a Boatswain.

And my favorite slang term…Old Man…for the Commanding Officer.

And btw…Have you ever heard of a sailboat…or a fishing boat…tugboat. I would assume that those are carryover from their original use…but so is ours.
