First off, that’s the USS John Paul Jones, and it is NOT a “boat,” but a ship. Something I’m sure they know, but it fits the piece better.
Secondly… that was great.
Third… here’s hoping their officers are understanding and don’t come down on them for this.
Jay Tea…
We call our “ships”…like submarines and destroyers… boats. And…if you look again…they are wearing officers uniforms. Although I enjoyed this and sent it to my son who is in the Air Force in Afganistan…My gut feeling…after this…they may just stay junior officers for a while. Of course times have changed and I may be wrong.
I hope you’re wrong about that hunch, VetRet. This is harmless fun.
Ensigns and jg’s forever. Really funny and they must have had the ok for the filming (is it “filming” if it’s digital?) but the mother f####ers? I don’t think so. But I felt like this 40 some years ago.
You know, Jay Tea, you don’t always have to leave a comment just because Oliver posted something.
Vet, it’s my understanding that if a vessel is designed to be picked up and carried on another, it’s a boat. Otherwise, it’s a ship.
With the exception of submarines, which are always boats.
I’m glad you enjoyed it, too. Personally, I didn’t care for it on its own merits and found it a smidgen distasteful, but the sight of our sailors having creative fun while carrying out their duties — that I can respect and enjoy, even if I don’t care for the particular form they choose. De gustibus non est disputandum.
And I hope you’re wrong about them suffering any repercussions for this bit of fun.
Fair winds and following seas, crew of the John Paul Jones.
J.
They named a ship after John Paul Jones, but haven’t named one after Jimmy Page?
Priorities, people.
I needed that so badly this morning.

All of this talk about what are boats and what are not has me wondering if some of you don’t realize that this is a Lonely Island song that they’re just lip syncing to.

Jay Tea,
I think your understanding is based on a misunderstandding of what’s literal and what’s real. In the sailors world there are many terms used that sandcrabs (those who don’t go to sea)…don’t understand.
Such as…
Barge. An admiral’s boat.
Gig. A captain or commander’s personal boat.
And then there’s “Boats”…From the Anglo-Saxon “bat” that stood for a small ship or vessel. Also slang for a Boatswain.
And my favorite slang term…Old Man…for the Commanding Officer.
And btw…Have you ever heard of a sailboat…or a fishing boat…tugboat. I would assume that those are carryover from their original use…but so is ours.
I appreciate the info, OldVet. I am, indeed, a sandcrab, but one who has a great deal of respect and admiration and affection for the Navy — and the men and women who serve or have served.
I’ve been aboard the USS Massachusetts twice, and it is an amazing experience — well worth the 3-hour (each way) trip.
Back to the video… I didn’t like it. Not my style.
So I’ll not watch it again.
But I do like that our sailors are having fun while fulfilling their duty, and I might pass it along to some other folks who might enjoy it.

Jay Tea proves once again that there is nothing so pointless and banal that can’t also be made pretentious by adding Latin. Nice work, Jay Tea. Your pedantry is a dull beacon for us all.
illigitimi non carborundum, fafaroo.
And for the hat trick:
semper ubi sub ubi.

“and it is NOT a ‘boat,’ but a ship.”
I must admit, that was my belief too. I guess the moral here is “don’t believe everything you read in a Tom Clancy novel”.
I appreciate the info, OldVet. I am, indeed, a sandcrab, but one who has a great deal of respect and admiration and affection for the Navy — and the men and women who serve or have served.
You catch that, haters? Jay Tea loves and respects The Troops! Anything else you’re all in favor of Jay Tea? Motherhood? Goodness? Jesus? The United States of America–no excuses!!?
And Air Force guys call planes “aircraft.”
It’s one of the little differences that set insiders apart from civilians. But if you’re not an insider, getting all indignant about the terminology means you’re a poser.
It was funny. This is very much how I felt as a SWO (Surface Warfare Officer).
And, yes, it is a “ship” all Commissioned Surfacefgoing Naval vessels are referred to as “ships”. Boat is a term reserved for RHIB’s and other “carry on” watercraft.
Submarines are also referred to as “boats”
This ship is a Guided Missile Destroyer (DDG) and is a ship but what we refer to as a “small boy” (along with Frigates)
Well, ed, as a devout, born-again agnostic, I’m up in the air re: Jesus. And I will confess a bit of a bias for the Navy over the other armed services.
Glad to help.
J.
Well, ed, as a devout, born-again agnostic, I’m up in the air re: Jesus.
Perhaps you could get some time to announce that at the dais at the next Republican Convention. I’m sure that would go over will with the Oklahoma contingent. Or any other.
This is harmless fun.
And not gay at ALL. No, sir.
Jay Tea loves and respects The Troops!
Just not the President, or politicians who become President. Or politicians in general.
Mr. Squid Shark,
Why do I get the feeling I have more time backing down then you have with that SWO tag on your chest?
I didn’t say it’s not a ship…of course it is. I said…we “call” it a boat. Of course I also have to say that after 38 years before calling it enough…I may be wrong…or just forgetful.
And Jay Tea…Even though my son likes playing with those F16 “Aircraft”…I’m also in favor of those that go to sea in “ships”.
we referred to our fast frigate as a “boat”
only now saw the video…
I think it’s funny that this comes right after a post criticizing SNL, considering this is an homage to an SNL short:
http://www.hulu.com/watch/56632/saturday-night-live-digital-short-im-on-a-boat
So all this discussion of whether it should be called a “boat” is pointless.
Jay trying to pretend like he knows the first thing about the military.
Priceless.
Here’s another video worth a look (filmed on USS Ronald Reagan):

In this case, there was some fallout from official channels afterward.
Jaim, I know a bit about the military. Probably more than the average civilian.
Nowhere near as much as those who have served, I’m certain, but a bit.
Frono, I’m not a country fan, either, but that video was downright fun. Sucks that there was any fallout…
