Worlds Oldest Dog Dies At 21

She was a dachshund.

Chanel celebrated her 21st birthday in May, according to Guinness. That’s 147 years old in human years.

Earlier this year, the dog’s owners, Karl and Denice Shaughnessy of Port Jefferson Station, N.Y., said Chanel was still feisty and in good health despite her advanced age. She did, however, wear sunglasses for her cataracts.

Still one hell of a run for a dog.

I’m pretty sure that means we can (and should) adjust the human:dog year ratio upward to 1:5, right?

A friend of mine thought he had the world’s oldest dog at 22 years old (a westie), but was informed by his mam that there had been 2 dogs, and the replacement occurred at the start of a long holiday. The replacement spent an intensive 2 and a half weeks being trained, and was actually much smarter than the mark one, whose lack of road sense cause it’s demise at 7 years of age.

The human-to-dog-years ratio actually isn’t constant throughout a dog’s life span. In its first year, a puppy reaches the equivalent of a human’s early teens, then matures more slowly in its adulthood.

Still, Chanel was probably about the equivalent of about 110 years in a person. That’s undeniably old.

    Still younger than John McCain.

    RIP Chanel.

    So sad – so young.

  8. Zython says:

I thought the oldest was like, 30 or something. I had a dog that died at 19.

On May 22, 2009 TV station 10-KLFY in New Iberia, Louisiana, reported that a “terier mix” named Max, owned by Janelle Derouen of New Iberia, was laying claim to the Guinness Book of World Records title of “Oldest Dog in the World.” The report said:

“Max is a terrier mix who’s been part of Janelle Derouen’s family just a few weeks after his birth on August 9th, 1983. That makes Max almost 26 years old.

Janelle says Max is in remarkably good shape. He suffers from cataracts, so he wears doggie goggles when he’s out in the sun, and a touch of arthritis has slowed him down, but not by much.”

When Janelle spotted our story on the current record holder, Chanel, she knew she had to let the world know about her incredible canine. We’ll keep you posted on Max’s quest for the title of world’s oldest dog, but in the meantime, Max isn’t letting his sudden celebrity go to his head.

I also think the aging process varies in breeds. There are some breeds that just live a lot longer, so more dog year/ human year credit for them.

We just got back from having our cat Lolita put down. OT I know, but it’s pet related, and I’ve been in a funk about the need to do it for the last several days. So, got it off my chest.
