Yet again, they are who we think they are.
At age 34, two years before his first election and two decades before he would run for governor of Virginia, Robert F. McDonnell submitted a master’s thesis to the evangelical school he was attending in Virginia Beach in which he described working women and feminists as “detrimental” to the family. He said government policy should favor married couples over “cohabitators, homosexuals or fornicators.” He described as “illogical” a 1972 Supreme Court decision legalizing the use of contraception by unmarried couples.
The 93-page document, which is publicly available at the Regent University library, culminates with a 15-point action plan that McDonnell said the Republican Party should follow to protect American families — a vision that he started to put into action soon after he was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates.
Regent University
aka Wackjob Televangelist Pat Robertson U. (home of The Fighting Batshit Crazy Republican Zombies)
Great, another willfully ignorant theocrat douchebag. Maybe God will tell him to invade Maryland.
I guess he’s happy that Sarah Palin quit.
Oliver, while your headline is accurate, the “we are who we think they are” editorializing is not. If you read the entire article, it’s clear that McDonnell doesn’t really carry those views anymore (although I did find it amusing that, at least during the time McDonnell wrote the paper, he seemed to think that “cohabitators” and “fornicators” were different categories…as if cohabitators never have sex with the person they’re cohabitating with).
Cons want women to stay at home and homeschool, bake brownies and quilt. The only women they want out of the house are Fox News anchors so they can get their RDA of leg shots
“But that was 20 years ago” says the liberal of anything we discover about a liberal.
And, of course, if we compare that to the contents of Pres Obama’s theses … oh, wait!
Or is State Senate papers … oh, wait!
Or his work at Occidental College … oh, wait!
Or his work at Columbia University … oh, wait!
But he damn sure was born in Hawaii!!
Heh
Right, Frank, because ONE available college paper from McDonnell is equivalent to ALL of Obama’s college work (”Or his work at Occidental College…Or his work at Columbia Univeristy…”).
Yeah , right , Mr Rotter, perhaps you misunderstood me . They are making a big deal out of one paper, when the President has failed to show us many papers .
It is to laugh.
Um…the guy had these views in the late 80’s to early 90’s. It’s not like we’re talking about something written in the 50’s or 60’s. This is recent history and quite bluntly, the idea of anybody in power ever having these ideas is kinda scary.
“…when the President has failed to show us many papers.”
One-word answer to this question, Frank: Did former President Bush 43 ever “show us many (college) papers” (and if the answer you give is “yes,” please provide at least one link to confirm it), yes or no? Heck, did (and this is another question that needs only a one-word answer), did Bush 43 ever show his born-in-the-USA birth certificate (and again, if the answer you give is “yes,” again please have at least one link handy) like you’re demanding Obama do with his?
If you read the entire article, it’s clear that McDonnell
doesn’t really carry those views anymorealtered his “official” viewpoint so it doesn’t sound so batshit insane, yet he can still court the batshit crazy religious loons with a winkall set
Shorter Republican Gubernatorial Candidate Robert “Bob” McDonnell: Jesus hates fags and Feminazis, just ask Professor Robertson!
A 34 year old man during 1989 writing this stuff? And attending Regent University? I really have to question how serious this man is as a professional and as a politician.
Maybe his views did change over the years, but that means he was one heck of an insulated, immature 34 year old.
Maybe his views did change over the years, but that means he was one heck of an insulated, immature 34 year old.
Pfft. Those views are perfectly consistent with those of the current Republican Leadership (e.g., Rush Limbaugh, Michael Savage, George Bush, Jr., Texas GOP).
Sound’s like some of Texas politician’s I wont mention here, perhap’s their all inbred or something…heh?
Can you cite any examples, Indeed/Mister ed?
As your alter ego likes to say: “I’ll wait.”
And “Thanks in advance. Also.”
Pfft. Those views are perfectly consistent with those of the current Republican Leadership (e.g., Rush Limbaugh, Michael Savage, George Bush, Jr., Texas GOP).
And their sheep-like followers. Forgot to add that. Also.
You buried the lede. Thinking two decades ago that a parent should stay home with the kids is defensible. Thinking the government should be allowed to outlaw contraception is not, even that long ago.
And attending Regent University is not, unless they have subsequently made a marked effort to repudiate the regressive worldview inculcated there.
To wingnut defenders: the quotes came from a master’s thesis, which is publicly available. McDonnell has made his undergraduate assignments, term papers, etc., no more available than Obama has (nor has he any particular obligation to, it’s a preposterous demand).
Actually, the mainstream pro-life movement is pretty much firmly against the use of contraception and does regard Griswold as well. Heck, don’t take my word for it. Take the word of 2005’s Senate Republican Whip.
I do prefer it when people are being up front about their beliefs.
So VA has a candidate for governor firmly in Pat Robertson’s camp, who simply never got out of his little hidey-hole as a 34 year old adult. This is supposed to be good for Virginia how?
Ooooh, a man who is not enamored with feminism might achieve a political office ! Good grief! A man with religious beliefs might try to govern !
We have gone from Freedom of Religion to an attempt at Freedom from Religion…
Maybe in your cold, sterile, amoral, secular world there is no place for religion, but I believe in God, and I accept as a given that there are more good people amongst people who believe in God, than there are amongst people who don’t.
To steal an idea from William F Buckley, Jr.: I’d rather be lead by 100 Presbyterians than 100 ACLU members. (And, no, I am not a Presbyterian)
Frank,
what about Presbyterian members of the ACLU?
Maybe in your cold, sterile, amoral, secular world there is no place for religion,
You have a First Amendment right to be religious, but in my warm, fertile, ethical and moral secular world, I don’t have any use for it.
I’ll take my education, ethics and morality straight-up, without the corrupting influence of religion.
If you want your world to have no religion in it, you can, but that doesn’t give you the right to keep religion out of mine.
When are you lefties gonna get it through your head , that one letter from Jefferson to a group of ministers , does not mean that the Founding Fathers didn’t want prayer in schools, or creches on the lawn at City Hall?
It’s a shame that Christians are persecuted in the United states to the point where they must pretend they are athiests, agnostics, or at least secularists to get elected to public office in most of the country. And why do heterosexual males still suffer from discrimination and underrepresentation in government?
Frank DiSalle: If you want your world to have no religion in it, you can…
Not if Griswold had been upheld by the SCOTUS. To name just one example.
If you want your world to have no religion in it, you can
Unless I need to spend US currency, which reads “In God We Trust.” Is that a statement on the part of the government that it recognizes only one of the Elohim, Jehovah, who declared that the other Elohim in the Canaanite pantheon (Ba’al, Satan, etc.) were lesser gods, and that he was first among them?
Or unless I want to celebrate the marital commitment of two persons of the same sex, to which there are no secular objections, but which remains unlawful in most of the US on strictly religious grounds.
Or unless I have to pay extra property taxes to provide (socialist) fire and police protection, public roads for access, and water and sewage service to a dozen tax-exempt church buildings in my community each worth ten times what my house is worth, and whose pastors’ salaries are also tax-exempt.
but that doesn’t give you the right to keep religion out of mine.
Apparently my statement that you have a First Amendment right to your religion did not scan. Read it again. S.L.O.W.L.Y.
Why can’t I be free from YOUR religion?
kth: To wingnut defenders: the quotes came from a master’s thesis, which is publicly available. McDonnell has made his undergraduate assignments, term papers, etc., no more available than Obama has (nor has he any particular obligation to, it’s a preposterous demand).
There you go being reasonable. You’ll never get thru the to the wingnuts that way.
Frank DiSalle: Good grief! A man with religious beliefs might try to govern !
We have gone from Freedom of Religion to an attempt at Freedom from Religion…
You’re distorting again to rail against something nobody said. The objection isn’t to someone with religious beliefs obtaining high political office. It’s to their imposing those beliefs on others.
And, yes, freedom of religion is the SAME THING as freedom from religion. You are free to believe whatever you want and free to not have my views imposed on you. Attempting to allow only half a freedom is more wingnuttery.
BTW, I’ve accepted your challenge.. Still waiting to see if you’ll follow up on it. Which is it going to be, Frank.
Frank DiSalle: If you want your world to have no religion in it, you can, but that doesn’t give you the right to keep religion out of mine.
Exactly right. But it also means you don’t have the right to force it into mine.
Half freedoms (i.e., I get the freedom, you don’t) don’t work, Frank.
When are you lefties gonna get it through your head , that one letter from Jefferson to a group of ministers , does not mean that the Founding Fathers didn’t want prayer in schools, or creches on the lawn at City Hall?
When are you righties going to get it thru your head that Article I and numerous cases over the centuries DO mean that government can play no part in favoring one religion over another. That is can participate in no situation where one may feel compelled to express a religious belief (e.g., the atheist child in a classroom where the teacher declares it is now prayer time).
Repack Rider: Why can’t I be free from YOUR religion?
Oh, you know the answer to that, Repack. Because it isn’t Frank’s religion and is therefore wrong, and you don’t have a right to be wrong.
Has anyone ever had an athiest knock on their door handing out pamphlets about the wonders of their (non)beliefs?
“Has anyone ever had an athiest knock on their door handing out pamphlets about the wonders of their (non)beliefs?”
Thank you. I find that those who believe in a god are a lot more intolerant when I declare an atheist, than the other way around. They’re constantly trying to make me believe in something that’s just not in me, and I tell them that, to me, the bible is just another book of mythology, and I’ll be damned if they don’t get offended by that! Hahaha!
S M your challenge has been accepted .
Why are atheists trying so hard to remove religion from “the public square”? Why does the ACLU sue small towns for violations of the First Amendment, so they can threaten their minimal resources with legal defense fees?
At least the Jehovah’s Witnesses won’t sue me if I don’t take their pamphlets. Incidentally, I have never seen Jehovah’s Witnesses at my door . A few Mormons, maybe, but that’s it.
Where I live, Witnesses stand by the railroad station and the bus terminal, holding up Watchtowers, but never speaking.
Now , we have moved our Christmas , Hannukah , and Kwanzaa icons off the lawn of City Hall to a private hall — and the earth continues to spin.
Now , we have moved our Christmas , Hannukah , and Kwanzaa icons off the lawn of City Hall to a private hall — and the earth continues to spin.
Yes it does continue to spin, and people still celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa. So what’s yer problem?
As for lawsuits, if small towns don’t want to get sued they can stop using public resources to promote religion. Are some such cases frivolous and ill-advised? Probably, as are some cases of all sorts, both civil and criminal. Doesn’t mean the principle is faulty.
Those who believe there can be no morality without religion reveal the shallowness of their own moral fortitude as they do not trust themselves to know right from wrong and need a figure of authority to tell them the difference.
Frank, still waiting for your answers to your two questions. Tick, tock, tick, tock,…
And why did you imply that that there are no Presbyterian members of the ACLU?
Yikes, to MY two questions.
One working parent + one stay at home nurturing parent = often (but not always) better kids. But escalating housing, energy, transportation, healthcare, etc.. costs – a direct result of our “greed is good” conservative culture – usually requires that both parents work just to make ends meet. And the wingnut solution to this dilemma, as always, is to blame anything “liberal” (as they define it) for the whole problem.
“they are who we think they are”
Racism, sexism, authoritarianism, tribalism, jingoism, sociopathy, homophobia… cloaked in a convoluted religious “freedom and liberty” American flag.
Why are atheists trying so hard to remove religion from “the public square”?
Because the First Amendment says it has no business being there, and apparently these atheists have more respect for the Constitution than you do. You would probably object to a statue of The Buddha on the courthouse lawn without recognizing your own hypocrisy.
Perhaps you could use this forum to explain why you oppose the First Amendment. I am ever so eager to find out.
OT, but I found a way to make the Witnesses and the Mormons go away and never return.
Invite them in, and start rolling a joint while listening to the spiel.
I had the fortune of doing some wood chopping chores right when I got my last watchtower visit. It was a woman and a little girl (for cover I suppose, to keep me from pulling out a joint?). The insistent little girl did all the talking. She wouldn’t take “Uh, no thanks, I’m busy” for an answer.
So I swung my axe at my wood like a madman screaming “NO THANKS! I’M… BUSY! BUSY! BUSY! AAARRRRRR!!!”
The watchtower woman ran away up the driveway dragging the poor little girl behind. Sometimes you gotta do what works.
To steal an idea from William F Buckley, Jr.: I’d rather be lead by 100 Presbyterians than 100 ACLU members. (And, no, I am not a Presbyterian)
Alternate Frank DiSalle: Right-wing religious monsters like Pat Robertson are still preferable to pointy-headed loudmouth New York intellectual lawyers who don’t even have the common decency to celebrate Christmas!
Bonus Alternate Frank: You know who also hated fags? William F. Buckley, Jr.!
Why are atheists trying so hard to remove religion from “the public square”? Why does the ACLU sue small towns for violations of the First Amendment, so they can threaten their minimal resources with legal defense fees?
Um, because these atheists and the ACLU firmly believe in the Rule of Law. Next question.
OT, but I found a way to make the Witnesses and the Mormons go away and never return.
Mrs. Quaker just turns the tables on ‘em and says something like:
“Thanks so much for taking an interest in my spiritual path. As a matter of fact, I’ve found one that I’m very satisfied with. Would you like me to tell you about it?”
The conversation usually ends reasonably soon.
Oh the poor persecuted christian majority in this country, boo hoo for them. They are treated SO unfairly because there isn’t an electric baby jesus on the courthouse lawn.
It’s as bad as throwing Christians to the lions, isn’t it? So terrible, such horrible persecution trying to remove Gawwd from public life. Oh how will they survie in such a hostile environment? Will Santa even come this year?
A man with religious beliefs might try to govern !
Nice distraction. He’s a man with pretty stupid political beliefs. But nice try at trying to change the subject form the fact that the Republican nominee for Governor in Virginia is a man who espouses fringe political beliefs at odds with our culture and way of life as well as being hostile to women and American freedoms. I think Virginia needs a mainstream governor, not a crazed extremist from the fringes of society, which pretty much defines much of the Republican party these days. Why do you hate Virginians so much that you’d want this freak imposing his immature, deluded beliefs on Virginians?
I never understand why those who are always bitching about how bad it is for people to be “dependent” on government are some of the same people who depend on government (through things like creches on courthouse lawns and Christmas as an official holiday) to recognize their religion.
Rotter: You asked two questions? I didn’t see the assignment .
Frank, see my post at 8:29 a.m. on the 30th of August.
SDM: BTW, I’ve accepted your challenge.. Still waiting to see if you’ll follow up on it. Which is it going to be, Frank.
Frank DiSalle: S M your challenge has been accepted .
Oh, please.
You said you’d kick my ass if you faced me in person. I offered to tell you exactly where to find me and meet you any time. And, typical wingnut, you suddenly find an amazing array of excuses and rationalizations for not following thru.
Hypocrite. Coward. Joke.
oookay, um, quick, Oliver, start another thread so we can leave these two to their Greco-Roman olive-oil wrestling.
Sean, Frank is quite often a chicken-fried shit on whole wheat toast, but posting a private e-mail sort of gets you into hold-the-toast territory.
S M You have mail . Pussy Punk Bitch
Rotter : I don’t recall that President Bush was asked for anything, which he refused to show.
Second, I didn’t raise the birth certificate issue. It would have gone away in two days, if it were explained that Hawaii, had destroyed original Birth Certificates , when they digitized. But, noooo, “Transparent Government” man had to go all mysterious. It should have been your first clue that he was not who claimed to be, as are all learning now .
Frank couldn’t kick a worm’s ass…he’s too old to get his leg that high. Plus beating up some worn out alcoholic old man isn’t exactly a challenge.
I don’t recall that President Bush was asked for anything, which he refused to show.
Evidence that he completed a flight physical?“
I don’t recall that President Bush was asked for anything, which he refused to show.
A little bit of statesmanship and/or sober judgment every now and then?
Second, I didn’t raise the birth certificate issue. It would have gone away in two days, if it were explained that Hawaii, had destroyed original Birth Certificatezzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…..honk….snort
You mean if he had jumped through every bullshit hoop wingnut freaks like yourself managed to pull out of their asses he wouldn’t have had any problem? Nah, y’all’d just pull more hoops out of your asses. Far better to ignore the birthers and let them sublimate their anxieties about the president’s “otherness” in public. FYI, Frank, the birther business did go away in less than two days, apart from the circus show aspect of it. That sound you heard wasn’t the rest of the country laughing with you.
The fact that Obama did not try to appease the birthers shows me that he is exactly what I thought he was when I voted for him: smarter than the average bear, and way smarter than the 99th wingnut percentile.
“I didn’t raise the birth certificate issue.”
I never claimed you did, you subject-changing birther rightist? Why can’t you answer my two questions with a simple “yes” or “no”?
Hypocrite much?
Van Jones was a member of a communist organization that believed in NWO type shiat way, way, way back in history; back to the year 2004. I think President Obama was like 14 at the time, probably not even worth mentioning.
Frank DiSalle: S M You have mail . Pussy Punk Bitch
Indeed I do. I accept you challenge and agree to be available for you to “kick my ass” and you give a fourth wimpy assed excuse for backing down and not following up on your threat.
Hypocrite. Coward. Wimp.
Wow, I’m loathe to give Frank some credit, because I find his beliefs kinda repugnant. But at least he’s not one of them anonymous trolls that comment without showing his face or give his name. He has done both. I think I should thank him for giving his opposing view because at least I know how folks like that are thinking.
Frank, you were totally wrong for threatening violence in the first place.
Yeah, I know I’m new, but I’m cocky.
‘When are you lefties gonna get it through your head , that one letter from Jefferson to a group of ministers , does not mean that the Founding Fathers didn’t want prayer in schools, or creches on the lawn at City Hall?’
Why? Because you’re in touch with them and they’ve told you so?
Prayer belongs in a church, temple, synagogue or other place of worship, NOT in a publically funded school; when are you Righties gonna get it that Christianity isn’t for everybody?
‘Why are atheists trying so hard to remove religion from “the public square”?’
Because it doesn’t belong there.
‘Invite them in, and start rolling a joint while listening to the spiel.’
That is freaking priceless RR; I’ll be sure to give it a try.
‘The conversation usually ends reasonably soon.’
Amen to that brother; the Mrs. is on to something.
‘Rotter : I don’t recall that President Bush was asked for anything, which he refused to show.’
Really? Not even common sense, decency, a grasp of history or the Constitution, the rule of law or cognizant thought processes?
He consistently refused to show all of the above.
Wilfredo , Sean said something to me that he would never have said to my face . I merely informed him of that fact. I never threatened him with violence until he blew the whole thing up.
That’s why I have informed him, that I am done with him, and will have nothing to do with him in the future.
He can call me whatever he wants, until that day arrives when we meet. I assure you his boldness will fade like the summer wind.
Frank DiSalle: Wilfredo , Sean said something to me that he would never have said to my face . I merely informed him of that fact. I never threatened him with violence until he blew the whole thing up.
Gods, Frank. You’d think these things weren’t available for everyone to see. The audacity of your lying is astounding.
First, there isn’t anything I’ve ever posted here that I wouldn’t say to someone’s face. In fact, I have had many discussions in person very similar to the kind that have happened here.
Second, what did I say that blew things up? Let’s check:
Wow. Pretty incendiary that. I called you out on another bald-faced lie. Certainly nothing like that has ever been seen here before! To which you oh, so boldly replied:
Pretty brave talk from someone hiding behind a keyboard miles away. And when I called you on it and offered to be available any time you wanted to show up, you ran like the hypocritical coward you are.
And my offer still stands. Tell me when and I’ll tell you where. Assuming you can find your wind-scattered boldness, ya wimp.
Frank DiSalle: I assure you …
Bwa-ha-ha-ha! As if anything that follows that has any credibility.
So he would send all democratically elected women in Congress home to bake cookies? Fire all female corporate CEOs immediately so they can start a sewing circle? That sure would open up a few jobs for all those poor White males who face so much discrimination in this country. Bah!
A 34 year old man during 1989 writing this stuff? And attending Regent University? I really have to question how serious this man is as a professional and as a politician.
Maybe his views did change over the years, but that means he was one heck of an insulated, immature 34 year old.
I’m guessing there isn’t a lot of fornicatin’ going on at Regent.
I’m guessing there isn’t a lot of fornicatin’ going on at Regent.
If Mrs. Quaker’s tales of her Christian school education are trustworthy, I’ll take the other side of that bet.
AdviCZAR, Van Jones isn’t running for dogcatcher, much less the governor of a state (yeah, yeah, Jones has “the ear of the president,” but in the very limited capacity of advocating for “green jobs,” not exactly a position with Secretary-of-State-level importance).
What does “NWO type shiat” mean, anyway?
NWO = New World Order, aka conspiracy theories.
I can’t decide if this is snark or stupidity. Good luck getting elected to office in this country if you don’t make a big deal about your faith.
AdviCZAR, Van Jones isn’t running for dogcatcher…
Moreover Jones long ago publicly renounced the radicalism he embraced after the Rodney King fiasco.
I can’t decide if this is snark or stupidity.
It’s snark, pretty good snark too.
Nothing incendiary about this :
I honestly hope you recover from the clostridium difficile soon, Frank. Because the shit is clearly leaking out both ends.
And while all you punks pile on – and it is interesting who is joining in on this: Burn, S M , Jaim ( a veritable Who’s Who of hebephrenic loghorrea ). I am taking a few days off.
By the way, Burn, I am a recovering alcoholic; when you come up out of the basement, you can ask your Mommy what that is.
Frank DiSalle: Nothing incendiary about this :
Yeah. As I said it’s “Certainly nothing like that has ever been seen here before! ” So I can see why it suddenly gave you such a case of the vapors.
Excuse me for being snarky when you felt it necessary to broadcast your current bout with diarrhea.
It’s not the Founding Fathers who were against prayer in school, it was Jesus. Here is Jesus speaking to his disciples just before giving the Lord’s Prayer:
Matthew 6:5 – “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth; they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”
And it’s not that Democrats hide their religion, it’s just that we actually read and follow the Bible, rather that use it to persecute and fear monger. Jesus told us: Blessed are the poor, the meek, the merciful, and the peacemakers. (Matthew 5) and love thy neighbor as thyself. (Matthew 19:19). He fed the poor and healed the sick and set an example of how we should live our lives. Helping the poor and providing health care for the sick are core principles of the Democratic Party, which Republicans oppose at every opportunity. The Republican party is the party of “rational self-interest” (GREED) and promotes the idea that some people are more deserving than others. If you are poor, you deserve to be poor and if you are rich you deserve to be rich, no matter how you got there. This is the very definition of evil described throughout the Bible.
Todd Smyth: The Republican party is the party of “rational self-interest”
The idea behind rational self-interest is to realize that looking out solely for your own immediate interest is not actually what is best for you. It’s to take a broader, longer-term view. To recognize that, while it may seem bothersome to have to “waste” effort carrying that wrapper until you find a trash can, littering in the park leads to others littering in the park and reduces the amount of enjoyment you get from it overall.
it’s just that we actually read and follow the Bible, rather that use it to persecute and fear monger.
Aw heck! Where’s the sport in that now?
(Hit Send button too soon in error. Continuing from prior post…)
.. That while it may seem to save you money by not having taxes go to provide healthcare for those that lack it, it actually costs you less overall (albeit in a less specifically identifiable manner) to have those folks relying on emergency rooms, not being able to be productive citizens due to illness.
Republicans, by and large, don’t want to spend a dollar they can see even when it saves then ten dollars that’s harder to quantify.
