Chris Broughton, the man who brought an assault rifle and a handgun to the Obama event in Arizona last week, attended a fiery anti-Obama sermon the day before the event, in which Pastor Steven Anderson said he was going to ‘pray for Barack Obama to die and go to hell’, Anderson confirmed to TPMmuckraker today.

  2. Jody says:

The GOP are aware that they are encouraging the crazies and the cultists among them, but do nothing because they see no downside to physical intimidation, death threats, and fearmongering.

That is, so long as it’s their side doing it.

  3. bordo says:

Oh, how I love the religious leaders whose teachings are so alien to the teachings of Jesus that they are unrecognizable. I’m pretty much a quiet atheist, but even I know Steven Anderson has as much in common with Christian beliefs as Dick Cheney has with kindness and empathy.

I sincerely hope this douche is vetted by the Secret Service and kept on a very short leash. He’s clearly a lunatic.

  4. jr says:

He must have been listening to Tears For Fears

  5. bikelib says:

Cue Dennis, Jay Tea, etc.: “But…but..Jeremiah Wright!” Am I right, guys?

  6. riffle says:

bikelib, I saw Meghan McArdle make that very comeback in comments to her “more guns pleae” post today.

If Anderson were an Imam, the people who are saying “But.. Jeremiah Wright” would be saying “KILL HIM FIRST THEN DEPORT HIM!”

  7. PTCruiser says:

“While each step, each step, brings us closer” to the day a Secret Service agent is going to shoot one of these signifying fools.

  8. Duros62 says:

    Well,….at least they’re not racist.

He must have been listening to Tears For Fears

That is never going to get old. Sorry Jay, it just isn’t.

  9. daniel rotter says:

‘pray for Barack Obama to die…’

Well, since Barack Obama is eventually going to die, this is a pretty nonsensical “prayer.” It’s like “praying” for October to come after September.

  10. Sean D. Martin says:

daniel, you’re an idiot. And worst, it’s by choice.

  11. Jaim says:

    Stay classy, Republicans.

  12. Mark Kraft says:

    Oliver,

I noticed Malkin’s idiocy on her blog today, about how Obama is using students to get census data… and I found the perfect thing to counter this foolishness.

Basically, this has been happening at the Census Bureau for a *LONG* time.

“We Know We Can Count On You!”, say the teacher handouts, instructing them to “Get The Message Home” with Fed prepared census take-home announcements.

..oh, did I mention these handouts come from 1988?
“We Know We Can Count On You!”, say the teacher handouts, instructing them to “Get… The Message Home” with Fed prepared census take-home announcements.

..oh, did I mention these docs come from 1988, and were published in ’87?

    http://www.eric.ed.gov/ERICDocs/data/ericdocs2sql/content_storage_01/0000019b/80/1d/7e/5c.pdf

I would suspect it likely that the current census teacher handouts that Malkin is complaining about were completed during Bush’s administration. In any event, it’s a complete non-issue… a continuation of preexisting policies.

This is the kind of thing that she should, like… research. Assuming she was a journalist, or a serious writer. I shouldn’t have to do her factchecking for her, but she likes to embellish reality, so…

Maybe Malkin was indoctrinated back in ’88 into Reagan’s secret census army back when she was in high school?!

  13. rip says:

It’s just like that time Rev. Jeremiah Wright gave a sermon about “burning Bush” last year, and Sen. Obama showed up at the Whitehouse with a Zippo in his pocket when Pres. Bush was still there.

  14. daniel rotter says:

    “daniel, you’re an idiot.”

What did I write that was idiotic, Sean?

  15. Jody says:

    Yeah Dan, answer the question.

I mean, what’s idiotic about not seeing how praying for someone’s death could be construed as malicious? And how could deliberately not seeing that possibly be even more idiotic?

That last one wasn’t snarky. Is it possible to be stupider than someone who refuses to see the malice in praying for the president’s death? I don’t actually think it is.

And Bikelib, you win the pool.

  16. Jody says:

    Yeah SEAN, answer the question.

Sigh. Snark is hard when you skip dinner.

  17. Isn’t this an old story?

    And who cares?

Are we really going back to, “See how those Christians are?”, every time some space cadet veers off the track?

  18. Wilbur says:

    Isn’t this an old story?

It’s dated yesterday. Maybe somebody had the connection between the crazy pastor and the armed teabagger before tpm, but I hadn’t seen it.

Are we really going back to, “See how those Christians are?”

No, we’re back to “see how those right-wingers are”, and you’re back to “move along, nothing to see.”

  19. abanterer says:

Those ‘Christians’ aren’t Christians. This preacher is no Christian, he’s a Dominionist. He wants a Christian America, one ruled not by the Golden Rule, but the Rule of the Sword. And if you don’t fit into that plan for whatever reason, you’re at best second class, at worse… well, we know the answer to that.

And it’s just little things like imprecatory prayer and arming your congregation that make that world a little more possible.

  20. Nimrod Gently says:

    “And who cares?”

You, if it was the last President. Charlie Brooker couldn’t even make the “where are you now that we need you” joke without every right-wing pinhead screaming that he was literally co-ordinating a terrorist assassination ring.

  21. Sorry, Wilbur… There was “Minister” praying that Pres Obama a few weeks ago. He got almost zero attention, while here it was like Armageddon.

No, we’re back to “see how those right-wingers are

So we’re still on stereotype , but it’s right wingers we’re stereotyping? Is that it? I wanted to be sure.

And, yeah, who cares? This isn’t even a weekend story.

  22. I'm a Hick says:

Anyone praying for the death or harm of any President is wrong. Any private citizen carrying a gun to a public rally is an idiot, even if it is legal. I’ve owned a gun for 40 years, and the first rule of owning a gun is, “There is no such thing as an unloaded gun.” What if one of these persons pulls a Paxico, but instead of shooting themselves, shoots an innocent bystander. As others have noted, granting that the weapons are unloaded, then the presumed purpose of carrying one has to be that it’s to send some kind of message. What message?

  23. Wilbur says:

Yeah, and remember the volcano of bile that erupted over Randi Rhodes’ Fredo Joke? And in this case Anderson wasn’t joking, and as far as I recall none of Randi’s listeners showed up at Bush events with assault rifles.

Frank, if major right-wing voices like Limbaugh and Beck were denouncing these dipshits rather than making them feel validated, we probably wouldn’t give them a second look. Maybe you, as someone who considers himself a principled conservative, should think about speaking out against them rather than running interference all the time by pretending that _we’re_ the ones who have a problem.

  24. Duros62 says:

as far as I recall none of Randi’s listeners showed up at Bush events with assault rifles.

They wouldn’t have gotten within 8 blocks.

One thing that somewhat comforts me; that guy that brought an assault rifle to a Presidential appearance most like had a sniper scope on him the entire time he was there.

  25. Wilbur, I believe that guns belong in the military, but I believe that I did not write the Constitution, which says that people can own personal weapons.

Similarly, I believe nuts like him should spend weekends sitting on one those ball toss things where he falls in a pool when the thrower hits the bullseye, but it should be at local Democratic Party Picnics.

I truly do not think that people like Rush Limbaugh, or the goofy Glen Beck, believe that it is OK to threaten the life of the President.

Perhaps the chasing down of Pres Clinton was retaliation for Watergate. Perhaps the hatred of Pres Obama is because of the hatred of Pres Bush. But the “hating” of politicians must end, at least in public.

I say that, not because I’m some do-gooder [my wife used to roll her eyes, every time I called some politician a “left wing commie a**hole” as if to say, “Here we go again”.

But that was in my home; not a pulpit, or a blog, or a radio network.

  26. durablend says:

I truly do not think that people like Rush Limbaugh, or the goofy Glen Beck, believe that it is OK to threaten the life of the President.

So long as the president is a good American Republican (not one of them terrist-appeasing Democrats).

  27. PTCruiser says:

[my wife used to roll her eyes, every time I called some politician a “left wing commie a**hole”...

So you grew up in the Soviet Union or Eastern Europe? Did your family move from Italy?

  28. daniel rotter says:

I’m A Hick, I don’t know what the secular equivalent to “God Bless You” would be (I’m an atheist), but whatever it is, I extend it to you.

  29. Indeed says:

I’m A Hick, I don’t know what the secular equivalent to “God Bless You” would be (I’m an atheist), but whatever it is, I extend it to you.

It’s “Go fuck yourself!” No, wait, that’s “Bless his/her heart.”

I think the secular equivalent of “God Bless You” is “Gesundheit.”

  30. Wilbur says:

I truly do not think that people like Rush Limbaugh, or the goofy Glen Beck, believe that it is OK to threaten the life of the President.

Well neither of them has exactly been a calming influence on the crazies, have they? I think when a president of either party gets threatened all they see is dollar signs.

Perhaps the chasing down of Pres Clinton was retaliation for Watergate. Perhaps the hatred of Pres Obama is because of the hatred of Pres Bush. But the “hating” of politicians must end, at least in public.

As long as we don’t mistake “criticizing” for “hating”, amen.

  31. canadian bacon says:

“Well neither of them has exactly been a calming influence on the crazies, have they?”

I think it was earlier this week that a Republican Limbaugh listener call in saying that the crazy Nazi name calling has got to stop because it was making their side look bad. Limbaugh said that he disagreed because the strategy is working. Definitely not calming the crazies; encouraging them for sure.

  32. PTCruiser: You’re reaching too hard for a “gotcha”. I called every liberal that — that was part of the reason for the eye rolling.

Incidentally, my parents were born in the United States. My great grandfather and his entire family were granted US citizenship by the United States Navy.

On my mother’s side , my grandfather got his citizenship after he got permission to fight on the British side in World War I, then fought on the US side , when we entered the war.

I come from a long line of shameless, proud America lovers. My Grandfather’s brother, Giovanni, made every one in the family stand quietly when the National Anthem played on the radio or the television.

    Heh.

  33. The Dark Avenger says:

So, Frank, you’re saying that as proud American patriots, your family would’ve been down with nutcases praying for the President to die?

    Interesting family you have there.

  34. daniel rotter says:

I’d be curious to know how many parishioners Anderson actually has. I’ve actually listened to some of the guy’s “sermons” through podcasts on his website and found that simply put, the guy is stark, raving mad.

  35. Dark Avenger — perhaps the darkness has impeded your vision. If you can see where I said that, point it out to me.

Is it possible that there could be so many simple – minded liberals? You sure like to pretend you’re smart.

You know why I comment on this blog? Because you guys need an education. Hardly any of you can debate, or persuade. Hardly any of you can read well.

Very few of you have any understanding of history. Most of you think that anything that happened before the Kennedy administration is archaeology.

As is typical of most liberals , you know far less about conservatives, than we do about liberalism, and you know so many wrong things about conservatism, it is laughable.

But I’ll keep trying. Maybe some day, one of you will get it.

  36. Sean D. Martin says:

daniel rotter: Well, since Barack Obama is eventually going to die, this is a pretty nonsensical “prayer.”

You’re having to ask further proves it. BUt since apparently I must point it out..

Well, since Barack Obama is eventually going to die, this is a pretty nonsensical “prayer.”

The pastor was not observing that Obama would die at some point as we all will. He was wishing Obama would die NOW. Before his time.

    Moron.

  37. Sean D. Martin says:

Frank DiSalle: Isn’t this an old story? And who cares?

Translation: Stop pointing out objectionable acts by the right. Anything over 48 hours ago is old news. Now, let’s talk about oval office blowjobs.

    wingnut equivalence, ladies and gents.

FrnankDiSalle: I truly do not think that people like Rush Limbaugh, or the goofy Glen Beck, believe that it is OK to threaten the life of the President.

I’d actually agree with you on Limbaugh. As he has stated himself, “My job is to grab the largest audience I can and hold them for as long as possible”. I believe he says a lot of things just to get the ratings, not because he actually believes them. (However, given his position in political discourse, I believe he does have an obligation to act far, far more responsibly than he does.)

Beck, on the other hand, I believe is round the bend. IMHO he believes everything he is saying.

Limbaugh’s irresponsibility and Beck’s conviction are equally dangerous.

  38. Sean D. Martin says:

Perhaps the chasing down of Pres Clinton was retaliation for Watergate. Perhaps the hatred of Pres Obama is because of the hatred of Pres Bush. But the “hating” of politicians must end, at least in public.

That sounds good and I’d be all for it. Although if folks continue to practice/say one thing in public but do quite different in private I don’t see any advancement actually having been made. Just hypocrisy on display.

My great grandfather and his entire family were granted US citizenship by the United States Navy.

I’m genuinely curious about that. Citizenship was granted by the Navy?

You know why I comment on this blog? Because you guys need an education. Hardly any of you can debate, or persuade. …. As is typical of most liberals , you know far less about conservatives, than we do about liberalism, and you know so many wrong things about conservatism, it is laughable.

Based on what I’ve seen posted by self-declared conservatives here and in general, I don’t see any basis for claiming conservatives have any real understanding of liberals. I’ve stated several times before that I’d love to have my position on something challenged by someone presenting a considered, reasonable argument for a different position. And with very rare exceptions (the discussion you and I had around last 4th of July weekend), little posted here comes close to that.

  39. The US Navy hired orchestras to play music on their ships to boost morale. Naturally, in their 1870′s – 1880′s stereotypical way, they saw Italians as the best musicians [naturally, I agree].

They hired my great-Grandfather and his orchestra to play on a ship called the USS Trenton, in exchange for which he and his family were all granted US Citizenship (I suppose the other band members were, too, but I don’t know for sure). My grandfather went on to become the musical director for Anna Pavlova, and his own orchestra played in Ebbetts Field in 1924.

In 1941, Gov Warren began locking up Italians along with the Japanese, until somebody discovered they had locked up Joe DiMaggio’s father. Why didn’t they ever lock up German – Americans? (True quote from a Roosevelt crony) “Because they vote Democratic!”

My cousin tried to learn as much about our grandparents, and the lives of our aunts and uncles when they were young, several years ago, before my Aunt Dora, her Mom, died.

  40. Zython says:

(True quote from a Roosevelt crony) “Because they vote Democratic!”

Any proof? Seeing as how you’ve been wrong about, well, everything before, I’m a tad skeptical.

  41. Read America’s Concentration Camps, by Allan R Bosworth

    That’s a book.

You may find it in a library — you know, one of those places where they keep a lot of books.

If you tell me where you live, I’ll tell where you can find one. As this would be your first trip, I can give you some tips that will make the trip fascinating.

And, by the way, Bozo, when it comes to being wrong about things , I’ll put my average up against yours any day.

  42. The Dark Avenger says:

Dark Avenger — perhaps the darkness has impeded your vision. If you can see where I said that, point it out to me.

Nah, it’s just that you mentioned how patriotic they were, so I was merely asking how you’d think they’d stand on this issue.

I’ts not my fault that you seem to have lost sight of reading for comprehension somewhere in the 5th or 6th grade.

Is it possible that there could be so many simple – minded liberals? You sure like to pretend you’re smart.

I dunno, it seems like a simple-minded fool such as yourself isn’t in any position to talk about pretending to be smart, unless you think that insults substitute for discourse, as in this thread, or this one here:

DA: Did I make a mistake and mention a double standard?
Did I forget that Mr Kerik has only been indicted?

No, the point is that Jefferson was dealt with BEFORE he was indicted. That kinda puts the crimp in “Liberals treated differently than conservatives” BS.

Did I forget that Ted Stevens was indicted and forced to step out of his race for the Senate and then exonerated?

No, you forgot that he ran for re-election while under indictment indicted and tried for alleged crimes and lost.

    From the Wiki on Stevens:

On July 29, 2008, Stevens was indicted by a federal grand jury on seven counts of failing to report gifts received from VECO Corporation and its CEO Bill Allen on his Senate financial disclosure forms, formally charged with violation of provisions of the Ethics in Government Act. Stevens pleaded not guilty and asserted his right to a speedy trial, which began on September 25 in Washington, DC, to have the opportunity to clear his name before the November election. However, on October 27, 2008, barely a week before the election, Stevens was found guilty on all seven counts.[1][2] However, National Public Radio reported on April 1, 2009 that United States Attorney General Eric Holder, citing serious prosecutorial misconduct during the trial, decided to drop all charges against Stevens—an action that vacated his conviction.[3]

Not quite the same as being exonerated.

Did you not notice (a few lines below your WikiPedia reference), this :
“the Jefferson Parish share of the district voted for Jefferson by a staggering 71% to 29%, clearly swinging the election in his favor.”

Yes, he won in 2006, and the indictment came out after he had won that election. If you think the same result would’ve taken place had the indictment come before his election, then I’ve a bridge over the Tule River to show you.

You apparently didn’t notice this, BTW:

Following Jefferson’s reelection, Speaker-elect Nancy Pelosi announced that Jefferson would not regain his seat on the Ways and Means Committee as long as he is not “cleared of wrongdoing in an ongoing federal corruption probe”.

And that, too was before his indictment.

Stick to the point? Yeah, well, the point was / is : An indictment is meaningless when the person indicted is a liberal

Except Jefferson lost his chairmanship before he was indicted, and didn’t get it after he was re-elected, and was re-elected before the indictment.

but when it’s a conservative or a Republican, they’re ordering the rope as they build the scaffold.

You’re as accurate with this remark as with your version of political history, and that’s putting it kindly.

    Libraries are socialist state-funded institutions.

Why are you such a socialist, Frank?

  44. Dark Avenger: Please stay away from hallucinogens when posting in the future.

    Jaim, get a grip

I suppose you think when I ride the bus, I’m a socialist.

Stop being a jerk. It’s obvious you are so far from persuading me, or any one , of any thing you believe, that you have become Zythonesque.

  45. The Dark Avenger says:

Frank, pretty please, be informed about a subject before you make an ass of yourself again on one of these thread on said subject.

  49. Sean D. Martin says:

Thanks for the further info on your ancestors, Frank. I’ll still maintain that it wasn’t the Navy that granted citizenship, although I’m sure they requested that that it be granted.

Frank DiSalle: Jaim, get a grip

Not every library in America is a Carnegie library, Frank. Many are public libraries supported with public funds. You don’t really prove your point by using a subset. It’s like saying everyone in America is male because you’re only looking at a specific part of the population.

I suppose you think when I ride the bus, I’m a socialist.

Well, certainly there are folks on the right who would think so. Socialism, by their apparent definition, would include just about any publicly funded service.

BTW, still looking for your reply to my invitation. Which will it be, Frank?

Incidentally, my parents were born in the United States. My great grandfather and his entire family were granted US citizenship by the United States Navy.

Lighten up, Frank. When was the U.S. Navy allowed to grant citizenship to non-Americans?

On my mother’s side , my grandfather got his citizenship after he got permission to fight on the British side in World War I, then fought on the US side, when we entered the war.

So your maternal grandfather was a Soviet citizen? (:~)

Then he claims I should be informed about a subject, before I comment on it.

You certainly weren’t informed on Senator Stevens’ history of his indictment and trial when you brought up the subject, as I demonstrated in that thread.

Talk about the world turned upside down! D A , don’t stand so close to that crack pipe, dude !

Thanks for the warning, derived from personal experience, no doubt!

BTW, I also have British citizens and American in my background, it took an Act of Congress for my grandmother as she was considered a Chinese citizen in 1948 despite being a British subject at the same time, so you now know the rest of the story…………………………….

An indictment is as good as a guilty plea, when it’s leveled at a Republican or a Conservative.

But when a liberal Congressman is caught with a freezer full of Stouffer’s Lasagna and $90,000 cash, we await the outcome of a trial to see whether or not he’s guilty

Can’t remember what you’ve written before? If I wrote as much drivel as you have, I’d have trouble keeping track as well.
