We went through a similar agonizing period with our cocker spaniel when she lost use of her hind legs. Vet wasn't optimistic she'd regain use, but put her on a drug regimen of prednisone. Knowing you are around will give him a boost. Before you know it he'll be back to being up to his usual tricks. I remember when my Cocker Spaniel (called Blue) was off his food and water and I was up at 3 with a spoon getting him to drink. 6 hours later they removed the pointy grass seed from his ear canal and he was fine.
