Signs of hope and change in America.
Given hardening Republican opposition to Congressional health care proposals, Democrats now say they see little chance of the minority’s cooperation in approving any overhaul, and are increasingly focused on drawing support for a final plan from within their own ranks.
Top Democrats said Tuesday that their go-it-alone view was being shaped by what they saw as Republicans’ purposely strident tone against health care legislation during this month’s Congressional recess, as well as remarks by leading Republicans that current proposals were flawed beyond repair.
The White House spokesman, Robert Gibbs, said of Republican lawmakers, “Only a handful seem interested in the type of comprehensive reform that so many people believe is necessary to ensure the principles and the goals that the president has laid out.”
The last time we had a Democratic president, we and he allowed for truly progressive change to be snuffed out in favor of conservative corporate interests. It was good, but it could have been far better.
I hope we don’t give away the farm this time.
Seen here are Angela Basset and Democratic’s Electoral chances in 2010.
The American people have spoken overwhelmingly that HR 3200 is a pile of manure that needs to be jettisoned into space, not passed on a party-line vote. Republicans found out in 2006 and 2008 what happens when you stop listening to your constituents. Looks like Democrats didn’t learn that lesson.
The funny thing, SaveFarris, is that you’d have said the exact same thing if the Democrats had capitulated on the health care bill, too.
The math isn’t there for a Republican takeover of congress. I know the Republicans are fantasizing about 1994 all over again, but it isn’t going to happen…
The Republicans could have had a bill that ceded to most of there demands. There would have been no public option and co-ops only. The problem was that the Republicans had already unleashed the crazy and were boxed into their “no reform EVER” platform. And now they’ve given away the entire farm: looks like there will be no republican input on the health care bill.
Hmmm…I have learned not to trust anything Obama says in public, because he is too busy making back room deals. Turns out he is willing to ditch the public option because Grassley told him to be open to the idea:
“The lead Republican senator in bipartisan health care negotiations said Tuesday that he urged President Obama this month to make clear he would accept a bill without a government-funded public insurance option.”
Obama, again, got punked by Grassley and Republicans and did just that…only to have it explode in his face. Sorry, but Obama, and I campaigned for him and sent him money and made calls for him and went door-to-door for him; sorry, but Obama just doesn’t have the weight and courage to be president. He is too quick to concede anything and everything to anybody…just as he did on the stimulus and just as he did with pharma. The GOP is making him look the flippity-floppity, timid compromiser that he is. I know Oliver won’t post this comment, but hey, a guy’s gotta try.
Maybe it’s Obama’s plan… be Mr. Nice Guy… then CRUSH THEM!

“just as he did on the stimulus”
I don’t follow you on this one. But I agree that Obama needs to listen to the American people, not the dead-ender Republicans in Congress.
I can’t imagine Obama hasn’t learned his lesson. Republicans have been gunning for him since day one, and he made an effort to reach across the aisle. He won’t make the same mistake again, and this is a very good thing for America.
Jaim – Obama and Dems cut tens of billions from the stimulus in an attempt to gain Republican support, but not a single Republican voted for the bill even though Obama and Dems made the concessions that Republicans wanted. Google it, I’m sure you’ll come up with all the gory details. As for Passerby’s link to the DKos video…ah..well…Obama talks a tough game, but has no follow through. Just like now, CNN reported that Obama and Dems were considering going it alone on health care, because they don’t think Republicans will vote for the bill no matter what they do…only…only…only…that is just something they’re considering and nothing, as always, has been decided. It is all mealy-mouthed, wishy-washy, cowardly and typical Democratic ploy to try and offset Obama’s ill advised hint at killing the public option…an attempt to save face.
I really hope the conservatives choose to run with this “The American people have spoken” thing.
But it’s really the Blue Dogs that are holding the bill up, not Republicans. As you like to point out, Republicans simply don’t have enough votes to stop it by themselves.
I mean… yeah, keep worrying about the Republicans, please.
Buzz is right. If you cut the Republicans out, who cares? They couldn’t stop it if they wanted to. You cut the Blue Dogs out … you don’t have enough votes to pass the bill.
This is what happens when you elect someone with no experience into the Oval Office.
But it’s really the Blue Dogs that are holding the bill up, not Republicans.
Can you name the Blue Dogs that are holding up the bill? Specifically, I mean. Who are they? Because the Senate bill is currently in the finance committee, and I was wondering if there were any specific blue dogs you could name there who said they opposed the bill.
You really have no idea what you’re talking about. The Blue Dog Coalition is a subgroup within the House of Representatives. The House bill passed out of its relevant committees and is not known to face any risk of defeat on a floor vote.
We past month has been wrangling over the Senate bill, and there is no “blue dog” coalition in the senate bill. Insofar as the senate bill is being held up by Bill Nelson, it’s because he spent time waiting on the Republicans to agree to something. Now that the Republicans have said they won’t agree to anything, it’s time to go it alone.
Well, here’s one example:

This is what happens when you elect someone with no experience into the Oval Office.
Uh huh, experience.
I suspect we will see many of the same people that are calling Obama a Nazi sign up for low cost insurance and continue calling him a Nazi.
I don’t agree with the Nazi stuff, but the left did it with Bush, kinda like the pot & the kettle.
Well, here’s one example:
Nice try to defend your fuck-up, but no cigar. That’s not a blue dog holding things up. The health care bill got out of every single House committee. It’s being held up in the senate because Max Baucus is holding a conference with a select group of republicans. There is no “Blue Dog Coalition” in the Senate. You can point to metaphorical “Blue Dog” Senator, but none in the senate have said they’re against the bill or even want to hold it up. At least none on record.
I don’t know about the issue, but the Angela Bassett pic is for the WIN.
Ok Tyro, you’re right. Despite a Democrat in the White House, Democratic control of the House, and a Democratic filibuster-proof majority in the Senate, the Republicans are holding everything up. I don’t know why that wasn’t clear before.
