One thing I want to make clear: Whatever knowledge I have of the military is because my father worked for the DoA for most of my life, and because I was in the Army for 4 years. I am not, nor have I claimed to be, a military strategist or military historian.

I don’t believe anyone outside the Pentagon can have a glimpse of the “Big Picture” til the war is over , and they have read a few books. As it so happens, I have read many books on Vietnam, and new stuff appears every day. So the “50 year rule” still applies to writing about wars and other major events.

As a timely example, I point to the time I called out the Cheney Administration ginned up phony terrorist threats for political gain. I defended the U.S. from fucking monsters; tried to anyway. Downright righteous of me if I say so myself. (And one shouldn’t have to point this out, but as Atrios did earlier, “And just so it’s clear: using the threat of terrorism to try to achieve political goals is, you know, what terrorists do.”) Where were you during those heady days, Dr. Professor Holier Than Thou?

Sorry to be the voice of reason here, siding with the assholes… but they’re not out of line for that.

This isn’t my argument to defend or to say who’s out of line, but no one here ever steps in to be the voice of reason when Repack Rider exploits his service to belittle someone’s opinion if he doesn’t agree with it, or to use it to call someone else a chickenhawk, which he’s done countless times here.

And no conservatives to my knowledge have ever mocked one thing about his service or what he’s said about his experience other than to say that not having fought doesn’t nullify one’s right to voice an opinion.

Veterans do deserve our respect and our support, but that is hardly a blank check for instant credibility on all matters. If it was, Timothy McVeigh would not be one of the most hated Americans in history. Bill Clinton would never have been elected. Neither would George W. Bush or Barack Obama.

Honorable service is to be honored. But it does not exempt one from being criticized.

During the Bush Administration, even the crustiest liberal could manage a “Thanks for your service” (as if I had mowed your lawn). Now I am mocked.

Because it is not the people who receive benefits who are the problem. They don’t interfere with our lives, they are not draining our economy, and they are not an “invisible government”. Have you ever been in a Department of Social Services office ? I would like all of you lefties to go to such an office one morning, anytime, don’t ask for anything, bring a book , sit in a chair , and watch what happens. See the tears and the fear and the desperation, and then tell me conservatives fear the poor.

As for having “principals” [sic] (did I hear that you were a teacher?): If I “deserve” the money, why should I return it? Do you donate your paychecks to poor Koreans? Of course you don’t.
