Cafepress isn’t responsible for the designs being shown, but clearly someone knows there’s an audience for this and someone wants to buy something like this. (via Jon)

  2. canadian bacon says:

    What do those numbers mean?

  3. buma says:

The numbers mean that the conservatards are clinging to their guns.

  4. canadian bacon says:

Some conservaturds are disgusting. How embarrassing for you.

  5. tawanda says:

    @canadian bacon:

“86″ means to eliminate or terminate
“44″ is Obama, the 44th president

  6. Wonder if the usual suspects are gonna whine about Oliver posting this instead of the actual story. Again.

Cafepress yanked the kill bush products, I did a search, lets get them to yank these as well.

  8. canadian bacon says:

The “Kill Bush” products have been removed from CafePress.com. They were created by individuals across the globe, as are the more than 8 million products available on CafePress.com, a diverse network of more than one million shops.

Hate related materials are in violation of our terms of service and are prohibited from being sold through CafePress.com. CafePress.com is an automated service, and as such, products are reviewed on an ongoing basis to ensure that merchandise that is in violation of our terms of service is removed from our site.

  9. johnnymags says:

fwiw “86″ in restaurant industry jargon means “We’re out of”, as in “86 nachos” – not necceeserily mean “kill”. – From my waitering days, lol.

  10. Bruce Henry says:

So, to 86 44 could mean to “impeach” 44, or “not re-elect” 44, not necessarily “kill” 44.
However, I’ll bet anybody who wears one thinks it means “kill.”

  11. Hillary 2012 says:

Oh, please, Oliver. That isn’t about assassination. Grow up or grow some thicker skin.

86 – To remove, end usage, or take something out or away.

Despite ALL other posts suggestion the origin of this phrase, there is only one true answer:

Chumley’s, a famous and OLD New York speakeasy, is located at 86 Bedford St. During Prohibition, an entrance through an interior adjoined courtyard was used, as it provided privacy and discretion for customers.

As was (and is) a New York tradition, the cops were on the payroll of the bar and would give a ring to the bar that they were coming for a raid. The bartender would then give the command “86 everybody!”, which meant that everyone should hightail it out the 86 Bedford entrance because the cops were coming in through the courtyard door.”

Plenty of real things to be perturbed about. No need to manufacture controversy and dilute real challenges.

    Hey folks,

To clarify, 86 means “to throw out” or refuse service to: http://bit.ly/l2DLy

86 does not, in fact, mean to exterminate or terminate.

We have similar content from folks who wanted to impeach Bush: http://shop.cafepress.com/86-bush

We also have a few million pro-Obama things, so there’s something for everyone. http://bit.ly/kNpeS

    Cheerio.

86 does not, in fact, mean to exterminate or terminate. We do not condone or support user-created designs (i.e. any designs) that advocate violence towards the president, or any other person.

  17. Rich says:

86 does not exclusively mean “to kill.” not by a long shot.

Ever get kicked out of a nightclub? you’ve been 86′ed.

This particular shirt is about as inoffensive as they come.

Although I can see how some might be aghast as it does target The Chosen One.

  18. Sean D. Martin says:

I’ve always heard “86″ used as interchangeable with “throw out”. (“What do you want to do with this?” “Ah, 86 it.” “OK, into the garbage it goes.”)

Every reference I find quickly online suggests the same.

    Dictionary.com:
    to reject; discard.
    .
    Wikipedia:
In American English, the number 86 used as a verb, to “eighty-six,” means to “ignore” or “get rid of”. … A person who has been “eighty-six’d” has been kicked out of the establishment, usually permanently. … 86 is rhyming slang for nix, a word meaning ‘to forbid, refuse, veto’ (as in “The boss nixed my great plan for reorganizing the company”). Nix carries a clear meaning of ‘say no to, turn down, forbid,’ which is the primary meaning ascribed to 86. … For football fans, “to 86″ still means “to get rid of,”
    .
    The Urban Dictionary:
To remove, end usage, or take something out or away.

    and others all say similar.

I’ve never seen it used to mean to kill someone. I think Oliver is again choosing to use the most inflaming, if less accurate, headline.

  19. Bruce says:

In bartending, 86-ing someone means he gets cut off of booze and probably thrown out. I have no problem saying I wanted President Bush 86-ed in that sense only.

  20. canadian bacon says:

    Ambiguity goes a long way.

  21. GustavMahler says:

86 in a bar means kicked out and you can never come back. 86 also means ‘get rid of’. That can also mean kill, what do you think ‘get rid of Obama’ means? Only white people will think it doesn’t mean kill. Black people get the meaning right away. What do you think Rush meant ‘Obama must be stopped’? Do you think he meant to apply the brakes on his car? Are people really so dense? There are a lot of code words being flung around these days.

  22. canadian bacon says:

“Only white people will think it doesn’t mean kill.”

    What does this mean?

  23. Suicida| says:

““Only white people will think it doesn’t mean kill.”

    What does this mean?”

    it means were racist.

  24. Suicida| says:

    This is lunacy,

Disliking someones professionally and wanting them dead are two very different things.

You guys are streching just a bit.

  25. canadian bacon says:

    Or naive.

  26. canadian bacon says:

“Disliking someones professionally and wanting them dead are two very different things.”

    They should be for sure.

He’s been called a terrorist, a Muslim terrorist, a baby killer, a socialist, a Marxist, a communist, fascist, a national socialist, liberation theologist, a black panther sympathizer if not an actual member of the movement, anti American, America hater, potential killer of old people and mentally challenged persons, creator of death panels, anointed one, messiah, and a liberal. He might be a liberal. Maybe.

The fires have been stoked and they rage on.

  27. Sean D. Martin says:

GustavMahler: Only white people will think it doesn’t mean kill.

Bit of a racist view, isn’t it?

What do you think Rush meant ‘Obama must be stopped’? Do you think he meant to apply the brakes on his car?

No, I think he meant he didn’t want any of Obama’s legislation to be passed. That he wanted Obama to fail.

Or are folks so hyper-sensitive that when someone says they want a black man to “fail” you see it as clearly code words for “strung up”.

  28. Nquest says:

I think for all this kind of stuff to be out there regarding Obama both before he took office and now, a mere 7 months or so, that he’s been in office is telling. I also think a president (Obama) with a record number of death threats throughout his candidacy and now that he’s barely been in office long enough to do anything is telling. Very telling.

400% more than death threats than Bush… So there are some “hyper-sensitive” people, all right. It’s just not coming from those noting the ridiculously uncalled for and wildly unfounded anti-Obama animus.

  29. socraticisilence says:

I’m sorry “Hillary 2012″, I guess I’m just shocked that you people exist in the outside world, its like seeing a Larouchie or something.

  30. Repack Rider says:

I disagree with the sentiment, but I don’t have a problem with anyone displaying it. It isn’t hate speech and it isn’t even vile or repulsive.

“86″ is to “toss out,” usually in the context of a bar. No lethal violence is implied.

  31. Sean D. Martin says:

    What Repack said.

  32. canadian bacon says:

    From answerbag –

86′ed is also slang for murdering or “offing” someone. Believed to have roots in the military.

One of the explanations pertaining to death is the distance of eighty miles out and six feet under meaning when a person who is to be killed by the mafia is forced to dig his own grave many miles away from civilization; or the possibility of a simple variation of the slang term deep six, which has identical meaning, and is simply meant to describe the approximate depth of water (6 fathoms, 11 meters) needed for a burial at sea. The term came into popular use among soldiers and veterans to describe missing soldiers as 86′d. Rather than describe buddies missing in action, it was slang to describe the MIA as being AWOL, therefore violating UCMJ Sub Chapter X Article 86. The public outdoor observatory of the Empire State Building was on the 86th floor; the site of more than 30 suicides. Another origin related to the Empire State Building is the fact that all the elevators stop at the 86th floor. Hence, everyone had to leave. The building opened in 1931, apparently a few years before the term became popular.

Don’t know how credible answerbag is though. BTW I really hate posting this shit, but it’s out there.

  33. Sean D. Martin says:

canadian bacon: Don’t know how credible answerbag is though.

No more than any other “user edited” site that has very little peer checking. IOW, not much.

(FWIW, not claiming the sources I posted earlier are the final authorities at all, although I would give more credibility to wikipedia than answerbag (due to the level of participation and reviewing of material that goes on).)
