Ben Stein Fired From NY Times

10:14 am EST August 7th, 2009 | News | 35 Comments

Sadly, it was not for equating Darwinian thought with the Nazis, as he did.

UPDATE: Here are some details on how Stein maligned Charles Darwin.

Maybe Steiny was (once again) making a mistake–The Nazis subscribed to the debunked theory of *Social* Darwinism…as it lent credence to their Eugenics policies, among other things.

Still, only the similarly ignorant ascribed intelligence to Ben Stein. I’ll always see him as the stoopid psychologist in ‘The Mask’….*That’s* Ben Stein to me…

Fired for being an unscrupulous huckster shilling for a predatory company? Shocked. What would Nixon say?

Paul Krugman’s employment attests to the fact that that alone isn’t a firing offense at the NY Times, Duros.

  8. Jaim says:

Paul Krugman has a Nobel Prize and has been right more often than he’s been wrong when it comes to economic forecasting over the past decade.

Ben Stein is a complete fucking idiot who doesn’t understand the basics of Evolution, let alone financial markets. (He was urging people to buy into the stock market right before it plummeted.)

False equivalence. You guys are so predictable. And fucking stupid to boot.

  9. Dennis says:

False equivalence. You guys are so predictable. And fucking stupid to boot.

No false equivalence. Krugman is in fact an unscrupulous huckster that shilled for a predatory company.

And he wasn’t fired by the NY Times for it.

My statement is a true one and I stand by it.

  10. Duros62 says:

Yeah, but Paul Krugman didn’t have a game show on Comedy central, did he? Huh? Huh?

And I think he understands evolution just fine. It’s that he was getting paid to pretend to not understand it.

  11. Duros62 says:

My statement is a true one and I stand by it.

    And that company would be?

  12. zadura says:

Dennis, what are you talking about?

Krugman is his own man. When Democrats favored protectionism in the 90s, he supported globalization. He supported Sen. Clinton unfailingly even after she had no chance of winning. He is extremely critical of Obama’s health plan. You may not agree with him, but there is probably no more honest public intellectual in the U.S.

  13. Duros62 says:

but there is probably no more honest public intellectual in the U.S.

And no more dishonest one that Ben Stein.

  14. Quaker in a Basement says:

I believe Dennis is referring to the fact that Mr. Krugman once did some work for Enron–work that involved economics and did not involve either “shilling” or “huckstering”. At no time has Mr. Krugman sought to hide or misportray his work for the company.

  15. Quaker in a Basement says:

You sure you want to go down the road of tarring folks for their association with Enron, Den’?

My statement is a true one and I stand by it.

If you insist on standing by it, I suggest you stand upwind of it. Krugman wasn’t fired for it because it happened–and ended–before he ever went to work for the Times in the first place.

  17. Duros62 says:

Were there any commercials featuring Mr. Krugman for Enron? As in “Hi, I’m Paul Krugman for Enron…”?

    No?

    Then shut it.

I just heard one of those Ben Stein ads on the radio 15 minutes ago.
He’s a whore. My statement is a true one and I stand by it.

  18. Jay says:

Paul Krugman has a Nobel Prize and has been right more often than he’s been wrong when it comes to economic forecasting over the past decade.

Yeah, if being “right” means predicting a recession 9-10 times from 2002-2006 and when it happens finally in 2008, he brags about “predicting it” then yeah, I guess that’s one way to see something as right.

As for the guy who wrote this blog entry, if the dude has nothing better to do than to go out and celebrate Ben Stein being terminated from POS newspaper like the NY Times, then he really needs to get a life.

  19. Dennis says:

    Then shut it.
    –Duros62

God, you’re sounding more and more like an an Obama footsoldier every day, Duros.

You may not agree with him, but there is probably no more honest public intellectual in the U.S.
    –zadura

Writing that opposing Obama’s health-care plan is essentially akin to racism is not being an honest public intellectual. It is being what he is, an Obama huckster and a shill.

    And a creep to boot.

  20. Quaker in a Basement says:

Writing that opposing Obama’s health-care plan is essentially akin to racism is not being an honest public intellectual.

It’s ironic that you slam Krugman’s honesty in that remark. You see, Den’, Krugman wasn’t writing about opposing the health care plan, he was writing about the deliberate campaigns of disinformation that capitalize on the anxieties of low-information voters.

But you knew that already, didn’t you?

  21. Quaker in a Basement says:

BTW, you still standing by that “shill for a predatory company” factual statement you made earlier?

  22. Burn says:

I actually met him in DC about 15 years ago briefly. He was a nice man and rather funny.

  23. fafaroo says:

Dennis, a simple question. When Paul Krugman did consultancy work for Enron in 1999 was he also employed by the New York Times?

  24. zadura says:

Dennis, actually, I am not talking about anything Krugman is saying in that article, which you obviously grossly mischaracterized. Krugman actually doesn’t like Obamacare at all. He thinks it is an ineffective half-measure and has said so many times. You can’t appreciate Krugman because there aren’t any conservative public intellectuals left.

  25. Jaim says:

Dennis is furiously Google-ing for anti-Krugman talking points as we speak. Dude isn’t really capable of independent thought.

  26. Dennis says:

  27. Jaim says:

Ah, Cato Institute. Totally impartial source you have there.

But considering Ben Stein’s lunacy, my favorite batshit-insane moment was way back in 2003 or so. He was giving a pro-Bush talk at some sort of rally, and he spends a good 30 minutes talking up the importance of honoring our military veterans. All well and good, and I agree. But then in the last minute he says that this is why we have to vote for Bush (a reserve, non-combat veteran with a shaky military record) instead of Kerry, a decorated Vietnam combat veteran.

So that was his entire causal argument for voting Bush. Because voting for a reservist honored veterans more than voting for an actual veteran. Just completely failed logic.

Anyhow, I’m sure he’ll find a nice wing-nut welfare position. Possibly at Cato.

GW won through 1st the bad luck, then the stupidity of the left.

He is a quasi-socialist RINO like McCain and Dole and wouldn’t have stood a chance if not for the fact that the DNC was stuck with Gore the 1st round and then were stupid enough to nominate a thoroughly hated traitor like Kerry.

In short, GW was president thanks to YOU LEFTIES.
You willing serfs haven’t had to contend with an actual conservative since Reagan.

Pray to Lenin’s ghost that the GOP stays stupid enough to keep the likes of Specter, Snow, and McCain running things because if they don’t, all the bolshevik bullshevik in the world won’t save you.

As for Stein, Krugman, and the NYT…
    Mere background noise.

  31. Rick in Bowling Green, Ohio says:

Ben is out at the NY Times?…Great, now he can get a job at an AMERICAN newspaper. Leaving that terrorist sympathizing anti-american rag has to be a step up. Cuba has a major toilet paper shortage…finally,a legit use for it. Now we know where to the send the times for proper disposal.

  32. Daniel says:

Listening to any economist about any moment in time, or worse predicting the future of any market, is like going to a witch doctor for kidney stones. None of them take enough variables into consideration to be accurate. Although Ben Stein has been regarded by some as an economist, he is best known to America as an actor and personality. A Noble Prize does not mean someone is the best, or even correct, about a topic just that they have enlarged the conversation and pointed new directions to seek the truth. Some of those directions have led to dead-ends. I did not read Ben Stein’s article comparing Darwinism to the Nazis, but the Nazis following Hitler’s lead did use Darwinism as a basis for claiming superiority over the Jews, social Darwinism was used more frequently in the United States.

No matter what you poeple are so stupid. The same people are pulling the strings. You are a puppets – puppet. Globalization, true we need to be globally active but to be locked into a global economy is pure foolishness. With any luck some place in the world some countries will be smart enough to “play” the game but not go “all in.”
