John McCain: Only GOPer To Push Back (Slightly) On The Mob

2:03 pm EST August 5th, 2009 | Republicans | 26 Comments

From McCain’s Twitter account

Town hall meetings are an American tradition – we should allow everyone to express their views without disruption – even if we disagree!

Of course, John McCain helped create this beast last fall, so excuse me if I don’t give him a lot of credit for this.

  1. Duros62 says:

Well, when you build a monster, you never really know how it will behave.
But kudos to him for that.

  2. jr says:

You know your party is in trouble when a guy who was against MLK’s birthday being a national holiday and called Vietnamese people “gooks” is the voice of reason

  3. Wilbur says:

Every once in a while I get the inkling that there’s a reasonabler, saner McCain in there somewhere who’s mad as hell at himself for allowing the Rovian wing of the party to talk him into becoming the howling hyena he turned into late last summer.

  4. Burn says:

If McCain really wanted to make an issue of this, he’d use a wider medium than twitter. I mean, the so called liberal media loves to suck his dick every chance they get, so all he needs to do is call his #1 fanboy Jon King from CNN, and he’d be over in a dash.

  5. Jay says:

    Dissent.

    Patriotic.

Only if a Republican is President.

  6. Quaker in a Basement says:

Dissent all you like, Jay. Nobody will mind unless your particular dissent comes in the form of “Nobody gets to be heard except me.” The protesters are not showing up to be heard. They’re showing up to make sure no one can be heard.

  7. Felix Helix says:

If dissent is the highest form of patriotism, Jay, then what would you call a nationally orchestrated attempt to obstruct civil discourse in a public forum? Think carefully, here. You may want to consult a thesaurus to find an antonym for the word “patriotism”.

  8. Exactly, nothing is wrong with dissent, nothing is wrong with protest, but hanging people in effigy and screaming down your congressman is mob activity.

  9. Jay says:

Oh please. The “mob” accusation is a meme that has reached down from the upper levels of the Democratic National Committee.

This comes down to the same whiny complaints Democrats always have when their supposed “brilliant” legislative plans aren’t implemented as though it was God handing down the 10 Commandments to Moses. “Mobs”, “astro turfing” and idiotic accusations that health care industry is behind the protests to the ultra-stupid suggestion that real protesters wouldn’t wear decent clothes (I guess one needs to look like a dirtbag in order to be considered “real” in the world of protests). The media, being the total stooges they are, happily parrots such nonsense without actually looking into it.

What’s more amusing (or sad if you see it that way) is watching people like Harry Reid and Barbara Boxer push the “mob” nonsense along with President Obama and bitching about “misinformation” and “disinformation” about a bill they themselves have not even read.

Democrats are setting themselves up to do nothing but blame the mean Republicans in what is mostly likely to turn out to be another colossal failure on their part.

  10. Wilbur says:

Once again, for about the twelfth time in the last few days, Jay demonstrates that he has no clue as to the meaning of the words “dissent” and “patriotism”.

  11. Quaker in a Basement says:

Oh please. The “mob” accusation is a meme that has reached down from the upper levels of the Democratic National Committee.

    Oh please your own self.

You’d have us believe that concerned citizens all around the country suddenly just up and decided independently of one another to ambush their Congressional representatives at town hall meetings with shouting, chants, accusations, and insults?

Sorry, Jay. These people are people called “mobs” because they’re acting like mobs.

  12. Duros62 says:

    Dissent.
    Patriotic.
Only if a Republican is President.

There’s dissent and then there’s being an asshole.

To show my bipartisanship, Code Pink routinely crossed into latter territory.

  13. Quaker in a Basement says:

    Just so we’re clear, Jay:
Henry Gates shouts at a police officer in his own house and possibly in his front yard. He deserves to be arrested.

Various protesters at public meetings shout at members of Congress, chant, hurl insults, and shut down any possibility of dialogue. Those are “patriots” and anyone who even suggests they’re misbehaving is a “stooge.”

    Awesome.

  14. Quaker in a Basement says:

I’m so old, I remember when Republicans thought sending a college kid with a video camera to follow George Allen around was just too, too awful to be believed.

  15. Jay says:

Quaker get the hell over yourself. Your comparison to this and Gates just oozes stupidity. I expect nonsense like that from Fafaroo or Stowbridge.

    Bottom line is: STOP WHINING.

    Democrats control the Senate.

    Democrats control the House.

There’s a Democrat in the White House.

If this health care bill is so good, vote it, pass it, have it signed and OWN IT. Stop acting like babies complaining about the poor wittle Congwessmen being “ambushed” by people. I mean good grief, these people want a bill pass that will cost TRILLIONS of dollars and they can’t deal with some protesters?

    Suck it up already.

  16. Quaker in a Basement says:

    Still issuing orders, Jay?

I notice you’ve abandoned the original topic of this thread. That’s a good decision on your part, I think.

Sit tight. I think you will get the voting and passing and signing you wish for fairly soon. It seems the congressional Dems are getting impatient waiting for the GOP to come to the table with anything constructive.

Your comparison to this and Gates just oozes stupidity.

    Explain?

  17. Quaker in a Basement says:

Stop acting like babies complaining about the poor wittle Congwessmen being “ambushed” by people.

The ambushes aren’t a good reason to complain? OK, how about the death threats?

  18. McCain is a tool.

  19. Jay says:

    Still issuing orders, Jay?

    I didn’t issue an order. I made a statement.

I notice you’ve abandoned the original topic of this thread. That’s a good decision on your part, I think.

Because part of your usual tactic is to change the subject. We’re talking “mobs”, dissent and protests and suddenly you’re like, “HENRY GATES!”

Sit tight. I think you will get the voting and passing and signing you wish for fairly soon.

Good. Of course, if it fails, the Democrats will have a readily available scapegoat.

The ambushes aren’t a good reason to complain? OK, how about the death threats?

What about them? You’re talking apples and oranges here. And guess what? This is not the first time (nor the last time) a politician has been threatened.

  20. Quaker in a Basement says:

    I didn’t issue an order.

    No? What are these?
    “…get the hell over yourself…”
    “…STOP WHINING…”
    “…Suck it up already…”

Because part of your usual tactic is to change the subject. We’re talking “mobs”, dissent and protests and suddenly you’re like, “HENRY GATES!”

    1) Wrong. My usual tactic is to stick stubbornly to the subject while you divert.
    2) Yes, we’re talking about mobs. You are quick to defend the same behavior on the part of Republican “activists” that you condemned just last week in the Gates arrest. Even when the protester behavior is far more disruptive to public order than Mr. Gates could have been with a marching band to help him out.

What about them? You’re talking apples and oranges here. And guess what? This is not the first time (nor the last time) a politician has been threatened.

I see. Dems are big babies if they complain about being ambushed by angry shouters. But if one of the angry shouters takes the next step to death threats, why that’s entirely unrelated.

    Jesus, what logic!

  21. Quaker in a Basement says:

Just curious, Jay. During the discussion of Gates’ arrest, how many times do you think you typed the phrase, “screaming and yelling”?

Back then, you thought it was a crime.

  22. Dennis says:

Claire McCaskill: Only Donkey to Push Back (Slightly) on Obama’s Shameful ‘Mob’ Projecting

“I disagree that the people showing concern over some healthcare proposals are “manufactured”

    Real folks, strong opinions.

  23. Jay says:

    No? What are these?

Statements. If you see them as orders, that’s your issue, not mine.

    1) Wrong. My usual tactic is to stick stubbornly to the subject while you divert.

No. YOU diverted. You brought Gates out of your back pocket which has NOTHING at all to do with this subject. Nothing.

Yes, we’re talking about mobs. You are quick to defend the same behavior on the part of Republican “activists” that you condemned just last week in the Gates arrest. Even when the protester behavior is far more disruptive to public order than Mr. Gates could have been with a marching band to help him out.

I’m not talking about mobs. Because they’re not mobs.

And I’m not going to be suckered into your nonsense comparison between this and what happened with Henry Gates because the two issues are mutually exclusive. So just stop.

Oops. I gave you another order. Oh please Mr. Quaker, would it be possible for you not to discuss irrelevant issues?

    That better?

I see. Dems are big babies if they complain about being ambushed by angry shouters. But if one of the angry shouters takes the next step to death threats, why that’s entirely unrelated.

    Jesus, what logic!

    Right. Protesting = death threats.

What was I thinking in saying the two were different?

  24. Jay says:

I just find it amusing that people are now getting their panties in a wad over what is essentially…..community organizing.

  25. Duros62 says:

Wow, do you not see that the very fabric of the universe is coming undone?

    Gabe renounces John McCain completely.
    Dennis hearts Claire McCaskill

    Dogs and cats living together!

If this health care bill is so good, vote it, pass it, have it signed and OWN IT.

Okay, you got it. Please tell the others to get the fuck out of the way.

  26. Duros62 says:

Jay, being an asshole =/= community organizing.

What is going on here is a bunch of people who already get federally funded health care (medicare, medicaid, SSDI) don’t want to share with anyone else. bunch of WATBs who won’t play well with others.
