BCHS - You know those tie-in novels that get written for video games? There were a few written for the HALO series that flesh out the beginnings of the SPARTAN program, and they are in fact excellently done. The first one, I believe, is called The Fall of Reach. I recommend it.

I thought the basic story of Halo could be fleshed out quite nicely into a movie. The Master Chief backstory (i.e. give us one), the war against the Covenant and then the discovery of the Horde... It's not Shakespeare or even Francis Ford, but 'twould serve. And we know that Jackson would actually give a damn.

Plus I love the name The Pillar of Autumn. :)

I see where you're going with that, OW. I suppose I'm a fan of both kinds, the highbrow sci-fi (2001, Asimov, probably the forthcoming District 9) that thinks it's Elevated and Important Art (and often is, in my opinion) and also the goofball stuff. The main reason I didn't like Transformers was I couldn't tell what the hell was going on most of the time.

In any case, if Peter Jackson stays on board for Halo even as a producer, I'm looking forward to it. Also the Gears of War flick.

The Halo story IS trite, but you must play the first on to appreciate it. The first Halo is still the best in the series. If Halos 2 and 3 are 10s (which they are) Halo is an 11.

"Would I like an Alien-style movie with Master Chief type armored guys blowing stuff up? Sure. But not Halo: The Movie."

That's probably what Halo: The Movie would be.

But that's exactly ehy I liked Transformers. I hate scifi that takes itself seriously. Transformers is the exact opposite of that. It's also why I didn't like DS9 and Voyager but liked shows like Next Generation and Battlestar Galactica. I hate shows/movies that get bogged down in the goo of scifi.

"I found the story quite stupid. It’s written like a middle school scifi fan would write it, inscrutable and filled with self-important twaddle."

Sounds like the perfect summer movie :)
