If he can run this fast in torrential rain and cold temperatures, heaven knows what he is capable of with a bit of sun and a tailwind on his back.

Not for the first time this season, the weather gods conspired to try to halt the Jamaican’s progress, but he made light of the conditions to cross the line in 9.79sec.

“I had a good feeling,” he said. “It was like flying.”

It was the fifth fastest time of his career and two one-hundredths of a second behind the world-leading time posted by his American rival, Tyson Gay, last week.
