The barbershop that I went to from the time I was in elementary school until I was a young adult was owned by a women named Tyler M. Allen. All four of the barbers in the shop were women including the manicurist. Her cousin was Joe “The Jet” Perry, the Hall of Fame former running back for the San Francisco 49ers.

Members of the San Francisco Giants, the 49ers and even the Harlem Globetrotters when they were in town would get their haircut at Mrs. Allen’s shop. She had a Bedlington Terrier named Dizzy (yes, named after Dizzy Gillespie) who slept in the window alcove most of the day.

Sometimes I would be in the shop when Willie Mays was there. I never talked to him because I was raised not to intrude on the privacy of others simply because they were famous. I would listen, however, to him talk and watch how he interacted with other people in the shop. He was always gracious and polite. He never put on airs or expected anyone to cater to him because he was the greatest baseball player of era.
