He gets to be President AND he gets to pal around with Willie Mays?

    Too much for one man.

  2. Repack Rider says:

I got to see Willie play. I’m that old.

He had been in the majors for about fifteen years before he got hit by a pitch, because his reflexes were so good that you couldn’t hit him even if you tried. And in the early ’50s, a lot of pitchers tried.

What a player. He has seen such a sweep of civil rights history, from Jackie Robinson to Barack Obama, no wonder he cried all night after the election.

On a related all star note, most fans know that Babe Ruth was a pitcher when he played for the Red Sox. He was a great pitcher, with a lifetime record of 94-46 and an ERA of 2.28. He only pitched five games after he turned 25, winning all five, three of them with complete games. The Babe pitched his last game in 1933 as a Yankee, at the age of 38, went the distance and won, after not pitching for five years.

The World Series record The Babe still holds is a 14-inning complete game win.

Thought you’d all like to know that.

  3. ignobility says:

Wow! That brought a tear to my eye.

  4. Lonya says:

    Beautiful.

  5. jr says:

    Terrific moment.

  6. I can’t wait to see if these “Oooh! Aaah! Look at how human our President is!” moments will occur when there is a Republican in the White House.

I just noticed today that Oliver actually calls Pres Obama “Pres Obama”. If he ever called President Bush, “Pres Bush”, when was the last time?

    { Cue the Chorus, “If we had a` President worthy of respect, we would respect him …” }

  7. Repack Rider says:

How much of your day is spent thinking about stuff like that, and how important is this to you?

  8. Mike says:

Frank, George W. Bush was a piece of crap. So are you. You belong together.

  9. SaveFarris says:

Nice to see the President has enough spare time to reminisce with Mr. Mays. Say, how’s that economy doing?

  10. Wilbur says:

God, there are some small, sad, bitter people in this world. I hope they find some peace.

  11. mambochicken23 says:

Frank, Farris, you guys are terribly, terribly petty.

Repack, I knew those numbers couldn’t be right… so I looked them up. Willie was hit a number of times as a hitter in every year for a dozen or so years from the start of his career. Granted, it wasn’t often, but it happened. Not negating how fucking unreal he was as a ballplayer, though.

  12. David says:

That was a wonderful moment. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

  13. SaveFarris says:

Wilber & Mambo, just holding this President to the same standard that’s been in place for the last 8 years. You don’t like it, you’ve got noone to blame but yourselves.

  14. Leota2 says:

Farris–Bush had no standards and didn’t give a damned if anyone thought he should. Best not to use STANDARDS and the last eight years in any context.

    Nice moment with Mays . . . .

  15. mambochicken23 says:

That’s great, Farris. Continue to emulate this type of “liberal behavior” that you abhor so much, because turnabout is fair play, amirite? Because surely you shouldn’t, you know, act in a manner that you have respect for, correct?

That’s right. Continue to be a whiny, small, immature child. Continue to be petty. It’s okay, because that’s what you’ve seen your political opponents do!

“I learned it from you, all right?! I learned it from watching YOU!”

  16. Duros62 says:

    { Cue the Chorus, “If we had a` President worthy of respect, we would respect him …” }

Kudos for answering your own question, Frank.

  17. Wilbur says:

Where do you think we learned it from, Farris?

  18. Quaker in a Basement says:

How dare we like the guy we elected!

  19. PTCruiser says:

The barbershop that I went to from the time I was in elementary school until I was a young adult was owned by a women named Tyler M. Allen. All four of the barbers in the shop were women including the manicurist. Her cousin was Joe “The Jet” Perry, the Hall of Fame former running back for the San Francisco 49ers.

Members of the San Francisco Giants, the 49ers and even the Harlem Globetrotters when they were in town would get their haircut at Mrs. Allen’s shop. She had a Bedlington Terrier named Dizzy (yes, named after Dizzy Gillespie) who slept in the window alcove most of the day.

Sometimes I would be in the shop when Willie Mays was there. I never talked to him because I was raised not to intrude on the privacy of others simply because they were famous. I would listen, however, to him talk and watch how he interacted with other people in the shop. He was always gracious and polite. He never put on airs or expected anyone to cater to him because he was the greatest baseball player of era.

  20. Merkin Patriot says:

  21. Duros62 says:

CAN YOU IMAGINE GEORGE WASHINGTON ON AF1 WITHOUT A JACKET???

    Why, yes. Yes I can.

  22. Merkin Patriot says:

HA HA HA SILLY LIBERASL – THAT SNOT GEROGE WASHINGTON

  23. Parthenon says:

I can’t decide what’s more awesome – the intentional parody conservative Merkin Patriot or the unintentional parodies a little upthread.

Great vid, one way or the other.

  24. ‘I can’t wait to see if these “Oooh! Aaah! Look at how human our President is!” moments will occur when there is a Republican in the White House.’

Perhaps if your party ever ran a human candidate instead of a corporate shill and robot.

Seriously, is there any other petty and petulant criticism you can throw out there?

  25. ‘Nice to see the President has enough spare time to reminisce with Mr. Mays. Say, how’s that economy doing?’

No kidding; it’s not long President Chugalug ever spent any time on vacation, you know, during Katrina or while two wars were failing, or while allowing the economy to tank or anything.

    Oh…wait a minute….

  26. Duros62 says:

HA HA HA SILLY LIBERASL – THAT SNOT GEROGE WASHINGTON

Ah. Sorry, I guess I didn’t HEAR YOU!!!!!! corretly.

    Settle down, Beavis.

  27. Quaker in a Basement says:

I’ve heard Obama can actually eat pretzels without getting carpet burn on his face.

  28. JR If I ever run out of petty and petulant criticisms, I can, after looking right above my own comment [ "dyspnea - joke or prank?" ], look at 8 years of left wing blogs.

In fact, make that 9 or 10, starting with Shrub and I Hate George Bush.

  29. Right winger “Frank DiSalle”: “If I ever run out of petty and petulant criticisms…”

That will never happen. You’re so full of it, “Frank”, that it’s like you are the cornucopia of petty and petulant criticism.

When other right wingers run low of petty and petulant criticisms they go to you, “Frank”, to get a refill.

Without petty and petulant criticism the right wing would collapse for lack of steam.

  30. ‘In fact, make that 9 or 10, starting with Shrub and I Hate George Bush.’

    Uh huh.

  31. canadian bacon says:

“I can’t wait to see if these “Oooh! Aaah! Look at how human our President is!” moments will occur when there is a Republican in the White House”

Shucks Frank, you have a way of ruining everything good. Why are you so bitter?

  32. canadian bacon says:

    sei proprio un miserable.

  33. Canadian bacon: why are you named after ham?
    Sei proprio un prosciutto.

And, “News” “Reference” my question for you is :

Is the guy who said this:

Violent right wing coward “Dennis” doesn’t understand basic math let along complex macroeconomics.
    * * *
The question is will Republican President Bush be viewed as having been more disastrous to the economy than Republican President Hoover?

The same person who said this:

Without petty and petulant criticism the right wing would collapse for lack of steam.
