This, by now, is standard operating procedure for the right in America. Which is the minstrel act of folks like Sonja Schmidt will always be just that.

    “it’s just a joke.”
    Or some such in 3….

  2. Porlock Junior says:

Ah, but you see, he has an explanation. A clever explanation, showing how much more clever he is than his critics. She said we were all descended from apes, and therefore…

Sure, the excuse appears to be a lie, in that no one can find such a statement, but you know, she might as well have said it, since it’s true(*) and she’s not an idiot or a creationist, but I repeat myself.

So that makes her fair game, and that shows DePass is much smarter than we are, and OBVIOUSLY he is not in any way saying anything about the fact that she’s, umm, you know, like black or something.

Thing is, these guys really do believe they are clever. I knew a No Taxes Libertarian once, who was not a clinically certifiable idiot, who admired the cleverness of the guys who falsify every report in sight to mess up the IRS and was outraged by the idea that people who filed malicious and frivolous tax papers could be prosecuted!! Who do those IRS guys think they are, anyway?

You see the same all the time as they outline the clever ways they’ll out-lawyer the lawyers with their brilliant reasoning.

(*) For certain values of “ape”. Cladistically, of course, we are definitely descended from apes, in that we are apes.

    “it’s just a joke.”

Which, ironically enough, Grumpyman, has been the rallying cry of the Keith Olbermann-led, liberal left punditry’s convenient dismissal this past week of David Letterman’s perverted and misogynistic attacks on Sarah Palin and her daughter. Those pundits who even decided to broach the subject, that is.

I would hope this fellow would find another line of work, not just for the offensiveness of the statement, but for not recognizing it for what it is or how it could be perceived. Or if he did recognize it, and did it anyway, thinking it was funny or clever; it wasn’t.

  4. Grumpymann says:

    Dennis,
I would be the last person to excuse it.
    But a comedian making a joke … the horror……

Rusty DePass forgot to look at himself but then to he does not look as good as a Gorilla, sorry to say that this thing belongs to the Human Race.

  7. Grumpymann says:

    Dennis,

As too your other point about “the left” not condemning this…..

First of all, Sarah Palin does not look or act like a “slut” and it’s nothing more than a sexual fantasy to think of her that way. She married her high school sweetheart and has five kids. She’s a born again Christian. She does not dress provocatively, and she has said that she put her hair up and wore glasses specifically to take her looks off the table as much as possible. She’s an attractive 40 something politician, she’s not a Playboy model (not that there’s anything wrong with that) and it would be nice if she didn’t have to put up with that stuff. She’s not trying to “sex herself up” for the camera or anything else.”

Yes. A comedian told a joke. That’s so improbable it has to be a conspiracy.

On the other hand, this man LIED about the reasons he said this obviously racist comment.

Gee, why does that sound familiar?

  9. Dennis says:

    Grumpyman-

That’s a fair article by digby. Thanks for sharing. Though I’m not sure I agree with her or know specifically the misogynistic things Limbaugh has said since Palin has been in the public eye. Palin maybe overplayed her hand on this one, though I’m not sure it’s fair to call it playing anything when the kids are involved. If someone famous like Letterman had something like that about my wife and one of my daughters, no matter if they were 14 or 18, I’m not sure I would have been as reserved as Todd Palin was.

Just as Obama said during the campaign, “Family’s off limits. You don’t talk about my family.” Everybody adhered to that, both those in politics and in the entertainment industry, or in Letterman’s case, both. That should apply to Sarah Palin’s family too. It should apply to everyone’s family at that age.

  10. Dennis says:

Yes. A comedian told a joke. That’s so improbable it has to be a conspiracy. Southern Strategy

Don Imus told a ‘joke’ about ‘nappy-headed hoes’ on the Rutgers women’s basketball team. Jokes are what he does. That one was terrible, highly offensive and downright mean. I somehow doubt you’d come to the defense of that joke, nor should you.

A cartoonist who thought he was making an innocent ‘joke’ by depicting a chimpanzee being shot by two policemen, along with a caption about the stimulus bill just pushed through by the Obama administration, was definitely not met with the same indifference by you as this Letterman joke.

You don’t have to have kids to understand this ‘joke’ wasn’t at all cool, Strowbridge. People got it when Obama told everyone to back off with his family. Letterman obviously got it with Obama. Evidently he didn’t get it with Palin. Neither did you.

Like you, he’s the king of the political double standard.

Remember all the Chimpy Bush comparisons or the more restrained remarks of his simian features. Is not turnabout fair play? I didn’t think so, it’s just not pc. One the one hand it’s just a humerous observation, on the other it feeds old racial put downs. But realistically pot meet kettle.

Remember all the Chimpy Bush comparisons or the more restrained remarks of his simian features. Is not turnabout fair play?

Well done, AO. Comparing a black woman to a gorilla is exactly the same as comparing a white man to a chimp.

In the future, please try to leave me at least a little room to ridicule your comments. With efforts such as your latest, you’re making my contribution redundant.

  15. Amused Observer says:

And what pray tell Quaker what would the difference be? I already pointed out that it would not be pc. What exactly is your point?

  16. C.S.Strowbridge says:

AO: “And what pray tell Quaker what would the difference be?”

There isn’t a history of racist attacks against white people by comparing them to monkeys.

Why do we have to explain this over and over again?

    Here…

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethnic_slur

Here’s a list of ethnic slurs. Now you won’t need us to explain the historical significance of the monkey slur, yet again.

  17. C.S.Strowbridge says:

Dennis the Bigot: “Like you, he’s the king of the political double standard.”

You are always willing to defend racism, aren’t you?

After your anti-Semitic outburst, I’m not surprised.

There’s a difference between saying a tasteless joke, and a racist joke. What David Letterman said was tasteless. What Don Imus said was racist.

Also, there’s a difference between a comedian saying a joke, and a politician saying something racist, and later pretending it was ‘just a joke.’ Especially when he lies about the circumstances of that joke, like in this case.

I know you are too fucking stupid to tell the difference, but trust me, there is a difference.

  18. Amused Observer says:

    LOL.
CS, thanks for the informative link. But what of it. You just spent a lot of time but no facts trying to explain to me that race doesn’t exist.

It’s not polite to call anyone a monkey or an ape. Nor is it polite to say that someone resembles a monkey. Your remarks about a history of racial attacks brings up the old canard that he who lives in a glass house should not throw stones.

But nobody on the left had any problems with doing that to Bush. Who would have thought that in such a short time it would be taboo to say the same thing about the next President and his family. Why? Because it fits an old ethnic slur. Well tough shit.

My very first post pointed all that out, its not pc. So what’s your point CS? Its like the word nigger. It is ok for it to go out all over the public airways as rap by predominately black musicians. It’s ok because the “own” it but it is horrible if a white person says it, unless of course he is a former klansman and Democrat.

Bullshit, put it out there into the mainstream and more and more people are going to use it. That’s just a fact of life. It’s called coursening of the culture. And no CS its not a hate crime, don’t waste your time filing a protest with your local HRC.

  19. Dennis says:

S Strategy: You are always willing to defend racism, aren’t you?

Nowhere did I defend racism. You can bring up other threads and our differences of opinion, but nowhere in this thread. You make up that charge here, a recurring theme with you.

S Srategy: After your anti-Semitic outburst, I’m not surprised.

No outburst. That is a lie. So is calling it Anti-Semitic. Your lying is pathological. As is your obsessive-compulsive behavior. Even liberals on this site concur. Most other liberals here choose to ignore you to avoid the confrontation you crave.

S Strategy:There’s a difference between saying a tasteless joke, and a racist joke. What David Letterman said was tasteless. What Don Imus said was racist.

Imus called the women ‘nappy-headed hoes’, Letterman called Palin and her daughter sluts. You exhibit a double standard there to excuse one on the basis of it only being a joke from a comedian, and the other being a joke that you determine was racist. Letterman’s joke was much worse than just a tasteless joke. If you are going to project that Imus’ joke was racist without a doubt, then you exhibit further double standards in not recognizing that Letterman was joking about the rape of a 14 year old girl. Bristol Palin has been all over the news and media. There is almost no way she could’ve been mistaken with Willow if anyone who came up with that joke saw her and Sarah together at a baseball game. Even still, he’s talking about the rape of an 18 year old girl, which I guess in your mind is merely a matter of a tasteless joke and easily dismissed. Trust me, your views will change on that the moment you cast your eyes on the birth of your first child, especially if it’s a daughter, if you are ever so fortunate to find a woman naive enough to agree to procreate with you.

    S. Strategy: Also, there’s a difference between a comedian saying a joke, and a politician saying something racist, and later pretending it was ‘just a joke.’ Especially when he lies about the circumstances of that joke, like in this case.

I know you are too fucking stupid to tell the difference, but trust me, there is a difference.

I didn’t distinguish between DePass’ joke and Letterman’s joke. You excused Letterman on the basis of it being a joke, and I brought up Imus and the cartoonist’s ‘jokes’. And I didn’t excuse DePass’ joke, so again, you lie. Either you are the one being stupid, or you are simply deflecting the issue of your weak argument that Letterman was only joking. Deflection is your other mark in trade here.

    You’re a moron, Southern Strategy.

  20. Grumpymann says:

    Amused Observer,

You may not agree with these facts about the racism in the comparison between blacks and simians.

And when you do it you may not mean it.

But to attempt to distract from those facts with that simplistic rebuttal is … disingenuous at best, racism in the median and defending racism at worst.

I had a very … negative interaction with someone who said something to me just after a friend of mine said worse.

    And why?

It had nothing to do with context it had to do with my relationship with my friend.

The relationship between people offers … leeway, rights, understandings as well as responsibilities.

In short my friend had earned the right.

It seems that the idea of relational rights is sorely lost when it dose not let you people insult someone else.

As to the nigger comment once again it is not about people it is about a few things some I learned in basic English.

Connotation vs. Denotation and Context. I.E. What is meant when the word is uttered (speaking to a community or an individual), The relationship between the speaker and the intended target of the slur. And when and where it is spoken.

These things are … subtle, individualistic and unwritten. That’s why it’s best not to utter that word nor any racialy charged comment in polite company. Lest it become physically uncomfortable for the speaker the hearer or the target.

It is my hope you understand the subtly in my above statement and it is meant as an illustration and not an insult.

    Peace be with you

“Imus called the women ‘nappy-headed hoes’, Letterman called Palin and her daughter sluts. You exhibit a double standard there to excuse one on the basis of it only being a joke from a comedian, and the other being a joke that you determine was racist.”

By the inclusion of the racily charged words of “Nappy-headed” had he just called them “Ho’s” it may have passed without notice. But in doing so he changed the context of the joke from tasteless to tasteless and racial. Weather he meant it to be or not. The difference may be difficult for some to see but none the less it is there. And by attempting to dismiss that FACT is defending racism.

“An insult need not be meant to insult to do so.”
“An asshole who says racist shit need not be a racist asshole. ”

    Peace be with you

  23. C.S.Strowbridge says:

    AO: “LOL.”

    Laughing simpleton.

“CS, thanks for the informative link. But what of it. You just spent a lot of time but no facts trying to explain to me that race doesn’t exist.”

Wow. You are a fucking ‘tard. There’s no doubting that.

Race is purely a social construct. That doesn’t mean racism doesn’t exist. It just means it is based on differences that are sociological and not biological in nature.

The fact that you don’t even understand the difference shows you are a fucking retard. No wonder you couldn’t supply a proper definition to back up your point; you couldn’t understand the point you were trying to make.

“Why? Because it fits an old ethnic slur. Well tough shit.”

    Translation: “Racism rocks!”

On a serious note, you basically admitted you don’t care if an attack is racist or not.

You believe that ‘race’ has a biological basis, but ‘racism’ and ‘rude’ are equal in your mind.

    In short, you are stupid.

So stupid that when you die, which I imagine will be shortly, the total IQ of the planet will increase.

Now please, only speak on subjects you have a quantum of knowledge about. In other words, shut up till the day you die.

You, Strowbridge, are a quite sick little puppy. Just why it is that you wish for the death of Americans so often here on this blog is anyone’s guess, but no one else does so like you do.

Without a doubt, the degree of hatred for your fellow man that you display here regularly, that you seek out as a matter of habit, is of the kind that only exists on the far-out fringes.

  26. Amused Observer says:

    Grumpyman,
I appreciate your thoughtful reply. I believe I understand where you are coming from. When a group pushes hard against thier opponents they can only expect a hard push back. The left pushed the simian meme little thinking it could ever be turned back against them.

“Remember all the Chimpy Bush comparisons or the more restrained remarks of his simian features. Is not turnabout fair play? I didn’t think so, it’s just not pc. One the one hand it’s just a humerous observation, on the other it feeds old racial put downs. But realistically pot meet kettle”

I think that post really says it all. Just because the sting for blacks is deeper doesn’t make leftists making that comparison with Bush ok. I’m not defending that guy from Carolina but I am pointing out how ironic it is that now such a thing is beyond the pale because as an insult it is so much more effective now than say, if as everyone expected, Hillary had succeeded.

Your point on connotation, denotation, and context is well made. But the word which was certainly dying out in polite company made a resurgence. Richard Pryor was the first to bring it to my attention but now I can hear it within 10 minutes anytime I turn on the radio if I so desire. Blacks can not expect to traffic in the word in pop music without expecting it’s use to mainstream. That is what I refered to as the coursening of the culture.

  27. Amused Observer says:

Try breathing with your diaphram rather than your lungs. And exercise, maybe you just don’t get enough exerise.

  28. C.S.Strowbridge says:

Another post that didn’t make it through due to DB error.

Me: “You are always willing to defend racism, aren’t you?”

Dennis the Bigot: “Nowhere did I defend racism.”

You do it every time you dismiss racism, which you do quite often.

Me: “After your anti-Semitic outburst, I’m not surprised.”

Dennis the Bigot: “No outburst. That is a lie. So is calling it Anti-Semitic.”

Why did you refer to Jon Stewart by his birth name and not his legal name? And if you have a real answer to that, why did you come up with so many false excuses before hand?

Until you answer that, there’s no reason to believe you over the obvious evidence.

Hell, you’ve practically accused Jon Stewart of being anti-Semetic to defend your obvious bigotry.

Dennis the Bigot: “then you exhibit further double standards in not recognizing that Letterman was joking about the rape of a 14 year old girl. Bristol Palin has been all over the news and media.”

The joke was about Bristol Palin, who is 18. There’s no rape involved in her getting pregnant.

Dennis the Bigot: “Deflection is your other mark in trade here.”

    More projection from the master.

  29. C.S.Strowbridge says:

Me: “So stupid that when you die, which I imagine will be shortly

Did I wish for someone’s death? No I did not. So I guess you are just a liar, liar, pants on fire.

  30. Dennis says:

You’re a sad, pathetic man, Strowbridge. Until and unless you learn to stop hating yourself, you’ll never be able to stop hating others.

Tell me, do you hang out on Canadian blogs and hope for people’s death there, too, or is it just American citizens who torture you to such psychologically damaging extremes?

  31. C.S.Strowbridge says:

Amused Observer: “None of us knows how much time is alloted to us here before we shuffle off this mortal coil. You however can’t possibly be adding to your own lifespan by living in such a sour cramped little world.”

I don’t live in a ‘sour cramped little world.’

    I’m having a blast.

You, on the other hand, seem to be suffering from deep projection.

Your political party is out of power. There doesn’t seem to be a week that doesn’t go by without a high ranking member of the GOP having a racist outburst like this.

It’s gotten to the point where you can’t even defend them, so you don’t bother.

Instead you attack me. And not my positions and arguments, but you attack my mental and physical health.

This leads me to believe that you are suffering some effects on your health. Projection does seem to be your calling card.

    “Antidepressants might help.”

Not depressed. My life rocks. I review DVDs for a living. I got to review Transformers over the weekend, the original cartoon. My favorite cartoon of all time. I get on average $200 of free DVDs a week. Every DVD I want to buy, there’s a 50/50 chance I’m getting it for free.

I just got a raise. Was able to buy a new computer and upgrade my sound system. (So far I’m a little disappointed, as most DVDs and Blu-rays just don’t take advantage of 7.1 sound.)

I telecommute to work, which means I don’t have to spend an hour in traffic every day, which has to be stressful. … Not that I have firsthand knowledge.

“Deep breathing is good too. Try breathing with your diaphram rather than your lungs.”

I don’t even know what that means. It sounds like hippy, yoga crap. ‘Don’t breath from your lungs.’ I don’t have gills, how the fuck am I suppose to breath?

“And exercise, maybe you just don’t get enough exerise.”

I exercise every day. And I eat a very healthy diet with at least 12 servings of fruits and veggies, mostly fresh. I avoid read meat, not for moral reasons, but because I have that thing that Hitler had, only less severe.

I’m weigh less than I did in high school, in fact, I’m wearing a T-shirt from my high school chemistry club right now. I’m not tall by any stretch of the imagination, and I could lose five pounds, but fucking hell, who couldn’t? Less than 4% above my ‘ideal weight’ is close enough.

    I don’t smoke, I don’t drink, I don’t do drugs, I don’t even have coffee or caffeinated colas.

Although I do need to cut back on the caffeine, as I tend to eat a lot of cocoa powder. It’s a great way to get a chocolate fix without the fat or calories. (Mix one part cocoa powder with three parts Splenda and enough sugar-free coffee flavoring (Torino / Da Vinci / Oscars / etc.) to give it a consistency of Ganache and then simply eat it by the teaspoon whenever you need a hit.) A cup of cocoa powder has less than 200 calories, 12 grams of fat, 17 grams of protein, and nearly 30 GRAMS OF FIBER! It also has high level of flavonoids and antioxidants, which have been shown to have health benefits.

It also has as much caffeine as you should have in a whole day, but I figure everyone should have one vice, and chocolate’s mine. (And no, I don’t eat a full cup every day, but I do eat too much of it.)

Overall I’m healthier than I’ve been in decades.

    How are you doing?

If we are not going to discuss the racist overtones of the gorilla comment, I’m willing to go into detail on the obvious distraction you are trying to bring up.

Like David Lynch, I can swear and tell someone off without having my blood pressure go up. You guys are not doing any psychological damage to me. None.

No matter how much you hope you are doing damage to me, you are not.

And I suspect this is merely projection, and you are dying since Obama took over.

  33. Dennis says:

Why would you imagine his death would be shortly, if you were not hoping for his death, you lying idiot?

Why did you mention his death in two consecutive sentences if you weren’t hopeful of it happening? Nothing either AO or you said had anything to do with his health, so your two statement just came out of nowhere, and it certainly wasn’t out of concern for his well-being.

It makes no sense for you to claim you weren’t hopeful of his death. You never do make sense.

You hate Americans, of that there is no doubt.

  34. Dennis says:

You guys are not doing any psychological damage to me. –Southern Strategy Obsessed Strowbridge

How do you explain your obsessive- compulsive disorder behavior, then? What does your therapist tell you about it?

I would think he can’t be at all pleased or approving of what you do here.

  35. Amused Observer says:

    CS

” I avoid read meat, not for moral reasons, but because I have that thing that Hitler had, only less severe. ”

I whole heartedly agree you do suffer from that thing Hitler had, intolerance and a deep seated need for a scapegoat. I believe the term is red meat.

“Like David Lynch, I can swear and tell someone off without having my blood pressure go up.”

    Wow dude
That doesn’t really sound like a healthy response to strong emotions. It also sounds like you need to get out more, see real people, get out of the basement and turn off the computer.

But if you notice I attack your ideas and positions all the time. I only attack you personally when you slip off the deep end and wish my death or something in a similar ridiculous vein. But I don’t get mad at you because I don’t take you any more seriously than I would a child throwing a fit.

  36. C.S.Strowbridge says:

Dennis the Bigot: “Why would you imagine his death would be shortly, if you were not hoping for his death, you lying idiot?”

Oh, I see. You are illiterate.

‘I would imagine…’ is akin to saying, ‘The evidence suggest…’

Google the term if you don’t believe me. Or perhaps you would trust McCain:

    thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/07/08/mccain-i-would-imagine-we-are-in-a-recession/

When asked if we were in a recession, he ended his answer with, “…I would imagine we are.”

Was he hoping it would happen? Or was he just saying the evidence suggested we were?

You guys are so fucking stupid. It’s just too easy.

“Nothing either AO or you said had anything to do with his health…”

No. Not his health, just my health. Repeatedly. He has a numerous times references my health, as have you.

So why can you guys talk about my health as if I was dying, or at least in poor health, but when I do something similar, you accuse me of wishing you were dead? Could it be you are a fucking hypocrite?

    Could it be projection?

    That’s it, isn’t it.

You wish I were dead, because I’m a liberal. I’m a Canadian, and I’m a liberal, so you think I’m the enemy. Just like the guy that assassinated Tiller, just like the guy who shoot up the Holocaust Museum, just like the guy who shot up the Unitarian Church, etc. You think liberals should be killed. You know it’s wrong, which is why you are projecting these thoughts onto me, but it’s you.

“You hate Americans, of that there is no doubt.”

You are a fucking idiot. And I just proved that. Absolutely, 100% proved it.

Me: “You guys are not doing any psychological damage to me. ”

Dennis the Bigot: “How do you explain your obsessive- compulsive disorder behavior, then?”

Don’t have any. You just like to accuse me of having it, because you don’t want to address the real points.

You had an anti-Semitic outburst, but you would rather say I’m obsessed with racism rather than admit you are racist.

This guy compared Michelle Obama to a gorilla, which is part of a racist tradition of comparing black people to monkeys. But instead of looking at the clear evidence of a pattern within the GOP, you would rather call me Southern Strategy.*

“What does your therapist tell you about it?”

Don’t have one. Don’t need one.

“I would think he can’t be at all pleased or approving of what you do here.”

I wouldn’t know, as he appears to exist only in your imagination.

    * – By the way, every time you call me ‘Southern Strategy’, you are emphasizing the Southern Strategy, which is a very real and very, very racist policy. You might not think it still exists, but at the very least you are reminding people the GOP’s racist past.

In short, you are doing my work for me.

    Thanks.

So why can you guys talk about my health as if I was dying, or at least in poor health, but when I do something similar, you accuse me of wishing you were dead? S STrategy

No one here ever talked about your health ‘as if you were dying’. That is just one more in a long line of bald-faced lies you are so well known here for. Could you point to even one quote from anyone who came anywhere close to equating your fragile mental health with your likely death?

No, you stand accused of wishing AO dead because you wished AO dead. Your reasoning that Barack Obama’s presidency will cause AO’s death very soon, but that it in no way indicated your desire for that to happen, is patently absurd.

    Even coming from you.

Referring to what I said when self-proclaimed minister david james manning (Harlem) made his off the wall, oh so stupid self-composed statements that he titled “Obama’s Mama,” I compare depass to him by again repeating the quote from Forest Gump — “STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES.”

That, to me, that sums it up. Now depass is trying to pass his slur off as just a play on a comment that Mrs. Obama made. Apparently he thinks that everyone else also fits the “STUPID IS . . .” quote. Lately we have been really seeing it in action by people who are supposed to be our leaders– preachers, politicians, etc.

Please stop trying to lead me. I’m not going to jump off that cliff just because you will.

What a country . . . a lot of us are goin in that proverbial “hand basket.”
