Worse than that: he plays demagogue gotcha with easy marks while he smirks in satisfication but is a pussy when he’s up against bigger marks he likes – like Pat Buchanan. He bullies the people he can and just busters on aimlessly with the bigger fish.

That’s what bugs me the most about ALL the cable news networks. They have 24 hours to fill, so they just grab whoever they can to yak for 10 minutes to an hour and none of it has to be true, and viewers will just swallow it. And that goes from Fox to CNN to MSNBC. I have no more faith in Chris Matthews than I do Steve Douchy.

But we need to start somewhere.

On the one hand, I always have a strong inclination to ignore the nuttiness on the theory that the thing these guys hate more than anything else is indifference. On the other hand, if you don’t hold people to account there’s no way in the world any of these nattering nabobs is going to enter into sufficient self-reflection to tone it down because its the bombast that’s driving their ratings and ad revenues. So when you follow the arc of these guys careers (Limbaugh, Hannity Malkin, Coulter et al. [and if someone wants to name their correspondents on the other side so be it) you see the decibel level and wackiness level increase by what it feeds on. People get sated so in order to keep it up – they get a little more crazy.

And they are also terrific at using opposition (look at how I’m driving those libs crazy) to solidify their base.
But if you don’t respond – it sitss there and people take it as gospel. Its amazing that people mistake opinion for fact and then make gospel out of it.

So the natrual tendency is to match it for intensity and virulence. It can be satisfying that’s for sure – and I’ve done that on boards from time to time. Now in our little corner of the universe in a small circle (relatively of people who comment here or there) its kind of immaterial.

But out there in the general conversation – I’m not sure its healthy.

And in all the time I’ve been commenting on here the only two people I’ve seen make any threat, and it is only of the “come here and say that to my face” variety, have been Repack Rider and PD100. But hey, I guess you can be forgiven for missing PD100′s threat to another commenter, this is a long thread and the comment was posted a whopping… 10 comments above yours.

So how do we do that? How do we convince the Limbaughs, Savages, Becks and O’Reillys (yes, even the Olbermanns) of the world to tone it down?
