First of all, it is the largest state in the Union and has the smallest population. The largest property holder is the Federal Government which reneged on the agreement at statehood to turn over the bulk of the federal land to the state. Something that angers Alaskans constantly. There are many military bases in Alaska. It was the frontlines in the cold war. You probably know what the DEW line was.

So many of those federal tax dollars you whine about are federal dollars tending federal projects and military installations. The Alaskan natives are quasi wards of the Federal government who have a large bureaucracy that spends lots of money on the natives in far flung places out in the bush with the usual level of government effiency. And lastly Alaska has had powerful congressmen who have brought home the bacon. But it is not just the bacon that is counted as tax money coming in but all of the federal money.

Now the often mentioned money that the Alaskans receive each year is not welfare but a dividend. When they struck oil the state wisely struck a bargain with the oil companies for a piece of the action instead of a normal lease. Alaska receives a share of the actual oil itself which is sold on the open market, the proceeds going into the state coffers. Now there aren’t too many people living there but they aren’t dumb. They know what politicians and government workers lust over. Somebody elses money to spend on thier wild eyed ideas and ever increasing salaries and benefits. So the people in thier wisdom set up someing called the Permenent Fund with the first of the big oil money. It is an endowment in which the principal cannot be touched by the always greedy hands of the government. That money is invested and allowed to grow and yearly a dividend is siphoned off and returned to the people who own it, the citizens of Alaska. It is sort of like social security except there is real money in a real account that really has been invested and generates real returns. Bigger returns in good years and leaner returns in not so good years. The state exercises a careful stewardship over the money because if they blow it they will answer directly to the entire population of the state, and a well armed state at that.

And lastly Alaskans return fewer dollars to the federal coffers because there are so few Alaskans.

Most of America knows Palin has a daughter who had a child at 18. Most of America knows A Rod is a whore.

Boom, there’s your joke. Ha ha. It was only a joke, a lame and lazy one at that, but no one is going to lose their life or anything.

This is what Palin gets for entering herself into this arena. She will never be a private citizen again for the rest of her life no matter where she goes. That’s part of the deal when you say yes to joining a national ticket, and if she doesn’t like it, too bad.
