…never have to do again….today.
we did do this again, in the Philippines Invasion and Okinawa, and (in the Korean Conflict), Inchon.
As I recall, all 3 of those landings were, or were nearly as large as Normandy insofar as men and materiel put ashore.
but I agree completely…an amphibious landing against a defended shore is a horrific undertaking.
This is a bit uncool – but as a Canadian I’m very proud – as are all Canadians – of little Canada’s contributions in WW2.
We had our “own” beach at D Day – Juno – our 3rd Canadian Infantry faced the stiffest opposition of all beaches, except Omaha, and we pushed further into France that first day than any other “Beach.” On June 6th we lost 340 dead and 574 wounded.
Our thoughts are with our lost, their families and friends, and the lost of our wonderful Allies, their friends and families. Our nations died together, side by side, fought for freedom and the liberation of Europe side by side – now we stand together side by side as firm friends – let it ever be so.
Dear God, what heroes. And the paratrooper who went onboard one of those Dakotas, with orders to jump into Normandy no matter what, talking about how long it took to form up the air “armaNda.” The humble, brave nobility of it all brings tears to your eyes.
How many soldiers noticed the useless life ring on the right side of that landing craft ramp?
